Hi Nate and Your wife! New subbie here. I have been back yard gradening in Philly PA since before COVID in containers. Keep growing! Summer heat is a water issue for me too. For ants try ant baits, onions, marigolds and zinnias. 2022 was my best year. Keep growing!!

Hi Nate. Gardening is a process, just like life. It happens. Life happens. Heat is the reason they use shade cloth in places like Spain. Second the shade cloth makes the plants need a bit less water. Third use flowers and herbs to get beenficial friends. Forth doñt plant the same thing together. Try to plánt your vegetables in different spots. So not all the cucumbérs together. They will also only last óutside like 5-6 months due to how easily they are killed. Fifth plan out how much you grow of something. Not all the beets together etc, same for the carrots. For the carrots you can grow a summer variety for hot places. 😅 You got this.

Great video. You put a lot of work into your garden. 1. Metal beds are making your garden hotter. 2. Raised beds dry faster and require much more water. 3. Shade cloth can help. 4. The City od San Antonio will give you free mulch once per year and that helps a lot. 5. Companion planting a few onions or garlic helps. 6. Some of the things were planted are cold weather crops for winter

Another suggestion. Beneficial insects! I grew many herbs and flowers to attract beneficial insects. I had a dill that I let flower. The aphids came and it was covered. I was about to pull it out then I saw the ladybugs arriving and they handled their business! This year I have more beneficial flowers and herbs to manage my garden. I read that only 5% of insects are pests.

@@juneramirez8580 if they were woody, you may have let them grow for a little too long - maybe try a week or two earlier next time! Make sure that they don't flower and/or go to seed, because that's when they get the woodiness.

Hey Nate, keep at it and you'll be a pro at knowing what grows best for your climate and the proper time of year to grow it in no time. Plant carrots in the fall/cooler season when the pest pressure is way down. Same with squash bugs...plant early in spring when the pest pressure is almost nonexistent or plant and immediate cover crops with insect netting leaving no part of the soil or plant uncovered. Also, buy seeds from suppliers who sell seeds that do well in your climate. Big Helper: buy ground Cinnamon in BULK...sprinkle it as soon as you see 1 single ant (pre-aphids), and they will flee and scatter until it looses its potency. Get rid of the aphids, you get rid of the bait for the ants.. the ants are drawn to the nectar of the aphids..worst case, give the ants a distraction..throw a pepermint candy away from the garden or sugar and let them go for that instead of only seeing your crops as the main attraction. Keep bait candy out there during the hot seasons....its all a cycle and if you prevent ahead of time with growing covered with netting and growing early in the season..the plants can withstand more pest pressure and may skip it altogether. Check out the free app Seedtime and with a few clicks it will set up a calendar for your climate telling you when to seed and tend to and harvest every seed you enter in the app that you intend to grow this year. Nows the time to plan and it takes maybe 10 min for a full year of peace of mind. Best of luck.🍀

Don't feel bad. I live in the Caribbean and I experienced the heat and excessive large, black ants. They ate all my corn, tomatoes, and all the plants that were in the ground, except my sweet peppers. I saved only a few things that were in pots. Most of my crops were destroyed by the heat. Nevertheless, I will keep going. I refuse to give up, and I am not even an expert gardener.

Find a schedule of what crops to plant at the different times of the year in your zone and area. I'm in Florida in zone 10a. Most Florida gardeners don't even garden in the summer time, it's just too hot and humid for crops to flourish. Okra is the best crop for summer, though. Eggplant can survive into summer too. I used to live in Thailand and it's even hotter there than Florida. I learned if I grow Thai crops, they flourish here in FL in my 10a area. Gardening is a learning experience. You never stop learning as a gardener. Don't give up. It's okay to take breaks to recoup, just keep getting back up on that saddle! 🤠

Hi Nate, try chickens or a box of ladybugs or put up a bat box, bats will eat bugs and pollinate your plants both. Never give up man, none of us are perfect! 🦹🦇🍻

Those of us who have been gardening for a while have experienced our own infestation tragedies at some point in time, so I can definitely relate, 😊. What truly helped me out was interplanting my vegetables with herbs and marigolds. Grasshoppers hate thyme too, so I planted that all over my garden. I also focused on improving my soil nutrient game by focusing on what I could feed my soil to strengthen the root system and make them less attractive to bug grub. And I made my own essential deterrent spray and sprayed that at sunset a couple of times a week or after rainfall on my plants with a sprayer or fogger machine. And covering your crops with shade cloth during the hot summer days (or with bug netting depending on your situation) was also a game changer for me! Sounds like a lot of work, but it really wasn’t once you get into a good routine of doing it, and my harvest yields repaid me with great results so maybe some of these things will work for you too. Just don’t give up and keep growing, 😊✨👍👍.

This is actually the first video of yours' that I've come across! This was a really good video honestly - you showed good examples, had hella funny references, good humor, humility and the ability to learn from your mistakes. This was sooo me this last year with homesteading! We got chickens, and one of them had late onset cross-beak. It wasn't that bad at first, so we wanted to at least try to help her have a nice life. We'd gotten the chickens for eggs, but also as pets. We didn't realize, but at some point the hen with the cross-beak stopped being able to eat and we didn't notice until she had a huge change in energy level (which came on so suddenly, she was the same as usual just the evening/night before we she was lethargic that morning and not trying to eat). All said and done, we found an emergency vet near us that could put her to sleep and we chose to do that. The vet and vet assistant assured us that we did everything we could have. That was back in October 2024. Our lesson was that sometimes even your best isn't enough, and you have to find a way to be okay with that. We also had a lot of wins with our garden and other chickens though, silver lining I guess! When you start to live a more sustainable life to support yourself, shit happens. You can never plan for everything. I'm glad that you've found your grain of salt, I'm just sorry that it came with a whole cup of salt. I empathize. A lot of other folks in the comments have great suggestions. I grow in zone 9b, so I'm not sure what you should be starting rn. For us, we just started (from seed) a bunch of brassicas, greens, carrots, beets (omg we love beets, you know the greens are edible and delicious when cooked right??), beans, peppers and flowers for market bouquets & pollinators. We have kind of a microclimate though because our city has one, but we're also on top of a hill.

To get rid of them ants, this works wonders!! Get you some sugar and boric acid. Shake it up in a a little cup or just mix it with a spoon or something. Then sit it near the ants. The ants love it, they get it all over them and eat it, take it inside the nest and its a wrap. You'll never have ant problems again.

I've found that with diatomaceous earth and ants that it's best to stir it in their actual pile. Of course make sure they didn't get on you while you do it. Hey mate! I live in a desert near Reno NV. I’ve also had a terrible ant problem over the years and recently I’ve all but solved it. The solution was removing their home. Ants will always find food, if that’s your garden, or your kitchen they will take that food to their home wherever it is. To keep them out of the garden or the house, you have to remove their entire ant colony that is in the yard, eggs and all. And bury a 1-2’ garden liner around the perimeter of your garden or property. Lay down cardboard over your top soil, 2” of mulch on top of that(water it in well), and 2” of dirt on top of the mulch anywhere you want to plant. Ants like dried out rocky soil. It’s easy for them to move around and structure into a place to live long term. As long as your soil is inviting them to move in they always will. By adding a barrier around the property you’re creating a first line of defense. It will deter most scavenger ants, thus colonies as well, from getting established underground which will go a long way to keep them from coming back. You must kill the hives you find, if they are already there they must die or they will never go away. When they are gone laying down cardboard traps water under the surface of it and over time will change the texture of your soil into something not hospitable to ants. The mulch adds protection from the heat and sun, and dirt on top allows you to grow grass again or garden at the surface.

I live in North Central Florida and have experienced many of those same things. I've only been gardening for 3 years. But I have learned you can't garden in the summer unless you garden what wants to grow in the summer. If your family likes green beans, try growing Oriental Wonder long beans. They love the heat they grow through it like crazy. And when you chop them up and blanch and freeze the them they're just like eating regular green beans. Sweet potatoes grow well through the heat and you can eat the greens just like spinach. Just don't harvest more than a third of the greens at any one time so they still have enough leaves to feed the roots. I harvest my garlic in April and onions in May. I have to keep my peppers underneath row covers helps protect them from insects gives them a little bit of shade and somehow or other the deer leave them alone hooray. Your pepper harvest and the watermelons were great! And your attitudes wonderful! Starting my tomato seeds tonight, now that my heat mat is finished with the peppers. With tomatoes I try to grow determinate tomatoes, because the indeterminate stopped producing during the hotter weather. What happens is the pollen gets damp from the humidity and it won't pollinate. Hopefully you're a little dryer there. Anyway this is the first time I've seen your channel and I'll be subscribing. Happy gardening! 💚💚💚

Hi Nate, I did not see flowers and herbs that manage pests on any of the your beds. Try interplanting marigolds, calendula, nasturtium, allysum, chives, oregano, thyme, rosemary among the veggies. It’s not 100% foolproof but your crops won’t be decimated.

Good work, Nate! Im in S.C. The heat & bugs were relentless here last summer, too. I'm using shorter plants under my larger plants this yr to fctn as mulch. Some gardners report better results mixing plants rather than row gardens bcse it seems to stop or at least slow the insect destruction to the same types of plants since they'reall not growing next to each other. You'll find the method that works best for you, your climate & your garden. Just keep going! We've all had some disappointing seasons. Just accept that every season may not be perfect.

It's all a journey. Love the honesty. I think some shade cloth might be a big help for you. I'm not sure where you are, but the sun seems to be more intense every year, and many plants can't take it. (And water won't save them.) Throw in that raised beds heat up more than plants in the ground and the temperature is too much for them. Shade cloth will help you a lot. GL!

You were not alone. Watering and shade were a real problem. Im in Ohio and i couldnt get watermelon, cucumber, zucchini to grow. Just not enough hours in a day to keep them watered. A few minutes after a deep soak the ground was hard and rhe leaves started shriveling up. My phone would stroke out just taking photos. A tip for ants. You dont have one big colony. You have several ant colonies. Take a scoop full of ants from one ant doorway and place them at another doorway. They will fight to the death. Just keep doing that.

Hello from southern California zone 10b. I've had a small veggie for the last 5 years. Heat and aphids have both ruined crops for me too. Neem oil works great on aphids, but there is a tipping point where they win. Last year I planted some back up cucumbers plants and that worked out for me. One year I had an amazing start to my cucumber then mice found out they love the female cucumber flowers. I only got 5 cucumbers early on and then I got none.

It is a big lost to us gardeners when our crops are lost due to various reasons. Sorry for your plant loss. I have a hugh ant infestation and sometimes I think all the ants in the US is in my yard, I know that sounds crazy but that's how I feel and when I see those little garden destructive monsters smh, however black pepper is my go-to for ants and aphids. Thinking about them right now and it is still winter here. sometimes I just feel like boiling some water and finding their nest and letting them have it. Enough about the anger. There are also ways you can turn the ants colony against each other. That you might want to do some research on. As for the aphids I am still looking up more ideas on those little plant monsters. Wishing you the best, knowledge is power and lets keep on learning. Bless!

As a fellow Texan (not that that's particularly relevant) and gardener, I can tell you DE doesn't work for ants. For aphids, you need a perennial shrub or bush type of thing to house predators (everything eats aphids). Those carrots were definitely premature.

Sorry you went through all that. I live in Florida zone 10a and like you face the same challenges. I have discovered that for zones like ours we need to stop trying to garden in the traditional way and implement more poly culture practices. It’s helps so much when it comes to pest pressure.

Mexican bean beetles wiped me out in 2024. They ate every leaf of every pea and bean plant I grew. Hang in there!

So sorrry about your harvests. I don't think those controls get rid of ants. But some of the things like carrots don't need pollinators so you can cover them with row covers. Keeps the bugs out and give them shade.

Plant your carrots in the Fall. They are sweeter when harvested in the winter/spring due to the cooler weather.

Hi, you were down. But, did you know. Gardening is a lot of disappointment. Its ok. Live, like, learn. I think the heat got to so many gardens this past summer. What you do is Germinate your seeds in trays a little sooner and acclimate them outside. Have an awesome night

GRASSHOPPERS!😖. They destroyed my container garden a few years back. I searched and tried many suggestions . This one worked for me. A KZbinr named Gardenerd has a video “How to Manage Grasshoppers in Your Garden”. Basically disturbing the place they laid their eggs in your yard! Before you plant check it out!

Like and subscribe to your great channel.. I love gardening. No matter what happens I still plant. The problem is summer time. Very heat. That is the problem of all gardeners. The more heat the more pest. It's part of the job. Just treat them . Don't waste your harvest. Have some animals to eat them like pigs and chicken. They can eat all the rejects. So that your hardwork in planting be worth it. And all goods will be used in your garden to table then compost the rest for fertilizer. Have a nice day. See you

Thanks for your advice and subscribing. The heat definitely is a problem. I wish I could have pigs and chickens, but my HOA doesn’t allow me to have them. I will definitely use the rejects for composting. 😀

you're not shaped like a walrus LMAO why am i just now hearing that??? i'm not new to this i'm true to this i watch because i like to watch people do things i like to do. that said next time you have aphids i know it sounds crazy dont do anything to them leave them at some point predators will show up it usually takes about 2-3 weeks for them to show up in my garden and they will eat those aphids down. if you want to do anything buy ladybugs and release them in your garden only do this if you have a high aphid population though because if you dont they will just fly away. if there is food they will stay. them grasshoppers.....baby let me tell you!!!! they something else. eventually birds got to mine but they destroyed plenty of things. copious diatomaceous earth is what saved me especially in the drought part of the summer when it wont get washed off by rain. i have a feeling the carrot flavor was due to your soil chemisty or the variety you planted. i habitually plant what people call "too close" with no issue and i've harvest carrots early the flavor wasnt bitter.

What’s up Deva, it’s good to see you back. Thanks so much for the advice on buying ladybugs. I may have to try that if it happens again. And I think you are right about the carrot variety as well. I planted another variety a year before and harvested them sooner and they were sweet. Next year I planted another variety on trying a few different varieties to see which I like the most.
