I live in Hungary, our pressing plant couldn't always meet demand, so we resorted to imports, mostly from Yugoslavia, Bulgaria or India, but sometimes the USSR too. So we have quite a lot of soviet releases, mostly classical and some western pop/rock music (Modern Talking, Cliff Richard are the most common), but not many domestic pop (except Alla Pugacheva), which is sad, 'cause i love soviet new wave, synth-pop and disco. Thankfully i managed to find a couple: Gruppa Feya, Sofia Rotaru, Maki, Alisa, Marina Zhuravleva, and that legendary aerobic instruction record with the cool minimal synthpop music. I'm still on the hunt for: Kino, Bazykina Twins, Roma Zhukov, Verasy, Car-Men, etc...

I live in Alaska, and believe it or not, these Melodya pressings show up all the time. Mostly classical and folk stuff, but every now and then you’ll find absolute gems. My most prized Soviet records are a 7” EP compilation by John Lennon that has songs from the Imagine LP and a compilation of the latest in soviet synth pop from 1988. Awesome stuff!

That is really awesome and surprising you find a lot of these in Alaska!

Thank you for this video, was interesting! Here in Russia I have a lot of Melodya's LPs XD Indeed their quality is realy depends on luck, even if condition of the LP itself is nice. Дальнейших успехов в творчестве!

I'm in Finland, so I come across Melodiya releases quite often, especially classical and folk music stuff people probably brought back from Russian holidays, but sometimes rock records as well. My favorites are the ones with bold Cyrillic typography on otherwise recognizably Western covers, I've a Jethro Tull compilation that's particularly nice in that respect. Also hey, I think my local thrift store has that Chorny Kofe record. I'll go pick that up later.

many years ago I had a melodiya test record various sounds live recording bird songs etc and on side two was fantastic classical music and jazz samplers, wish I still had it. it was an introduction to stereo.

It's cool to learn that the soviet release of Pink Floyd's DSOT has a decent sound. I remember that double album was owned by nearly every second family in the USSR, so popular it was back then.

I recently started listening to records and I am interested in western classical music. I currently have bought 5 records and interestingly 4 of them are from USSR, some labeled CCCP. When I first purchased them online I didn't knew their origin and bought them from different stores. It took my interest seeing their origin country.

hi Sacha (sorry is that how you spell your name?) I have few melodya some from charity shops in UK AND few from Tallin Estonia. I think I showed them in a video couple of years ago but need to check. Few interesting experimental ones too. Thanks for this video. A nice change from usual VC videos

Beatles was never seen as "dangerous" band in SU, at least from 1966.
@BlueNeon817 жыл бұрын
Just a correction: Beatles records, or should I say, recordings, were released by Melodiya back in 1974 as flexies, or 33 RPM 7" EPs. One EP has songs from Abbey Road in stereo and another one has songs from Let It Be and it is in mono. Even in 1977 Melodiya released Lennon's album Imagine. Just check them on Discogs. But the truth is that since 1986, Melodiya started to release more western music than before.

Nice records. I would like to hear those songs you showed. Do you have any older USSR records, like 1950's, 60's, 70's or patriotic songs of the country? I would like to hear those as well. They do not get as much attention as more modern music.

I found a copy of the compilation album Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven on Melodia label at my local record shop in Holland the other day, would you believe it ?! It sounds great, the sleeve is in G+ condition, but that's no surprise as these are paper thin. It is a pressing from 1990 with the red Melodia label. I am pretty happy to have found one this easy as they are hard to find where I live. I hope to find some more ...

I found a Melodiya pressing of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven at the local vinyl store, put it on the turntable in the store and it sounded better than the Yugoslavian pressing. Do you have any Balkanton/Bulgarian records in your colection ?
@LongPlayVinyl7 жыл бұрын
From what I have heard, Balkanton had a horrible quality pressings but I can't confirm that since I don't have any Balkanton. I do have some Romanian records and 1 Bulgarian as well which sound okay.
@Parlophonic6 жыл бұрын
@@LongPlayVinyl I have some Balkanton recordings and they are of high quality, especially an Emil Dimitrov LP called Moia Strana, (My Country). I was playing it only yesterday and love it all these decades later. I also have some EPs hich are also good quality and back in the 80s EMI released a double LP of Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St John Chrysostom under licence from Balkanton. It has the His Master's Voice logo and the Balkanton logo on the label. Great stuff indeed.

Interesting to hear about records being reproduced on X-rays. Do you happen to know where i could watch the documentary called "Hispers" would like to see that, but could not find it. Thanks. I subscribed to your channel by the way.

Glad you found it interesting! It's not a documentary, but a film set in those times, I don't know what you could find it honestly. Here's the wikipeadia page of the movie I was talking about: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stilyagi_(film)
