My Velomobile Derailleur Broke - This Is How To Fix It

The tension spring of my SRAM X0 rear derailleur broke. There's no spare parts available for that, so the easiest fix is to replace the whole derailleur. In this video I show you how to replace a rear derailleur from a Quest velomobile.

Hi Saukki. There are very clever pliers to disassemble quick links. I’ve bought one (IIRC YC-335 or something like this and now unhooking is a piece of cake). (I’m not affiliated in any way with any bicycle shop, I just wanted to share my positive experience).

Hi Saukki. I replaced the derailur my self but I didn't losen the chain, instead I took the bottom chain wheel off and fixed the chain in the right place and put the little chain wheel back on again. Time saved ;ø)

It's a shame they don't have spare spring as a spare part. And I am happy to ride a WAW, everything is very much within reach compared to other velomobiles. :)

You were lucky Saukki, I suffered the same spring breakage on my Questxs while riding home from a long trip around France. When it happened I was about 100km from home and on the wrong side of London! I ended up using cable ties to hold the derailleur in an intermediate position then just using the forward triple chainrings to allow three ratios. Fortunately no very steep hills going through London! Those sram X0 derailleurs looked beautiful but Titanium springs were not a good idea. Good video!

Yep. That part is not even listed in Sram spare parts catalogue. Shipping takes usually one week.

I have broken two of the SRAM X0 derailleur springs. They are a stupid weight saving 'feature'. I replaced the first one with a spring from an X-5 derailleur but it was not strong enough, so now my Quest has SRAM X-9.

I'm a bit surprised that you can't get a replacement spring. Perhaps from another model or make? Have you ever had this spring break on another rear-mech? I have not see that before myself. I agree with Rolf (Below) how about splitting the jockey-wheel cage and keeping the chain intact. Perhaps using a little bit of thread lock during reassembly.

I actually got a replacement spring which is from Shimano rear mech. But what I’ve heard is that replacing the Sram spring is tricky. Maybe later I attempt replacing the spring. Most important thing was to get the Quest back on the road again. It was easier to replace the whole derailleur.

Dear Saukki... My WAW has a Rohloff Speedhub (no derailleurs) with a dual guarded front chainring (no chain drop)... the biggest advantage for me is the ability to shift to any of the 14 gears at any time. Perhaps with your new heavier quatrovelo you might give some consideration to a Rohloff?

@@TheVelomobileChannel Had the same defect @my DF with app. 36Tkm. Now using an older X0 which had already 40 Tkm when replacing, still working... :-) The SRAM GX is also a (cheaper) alternative.

Wait that looks like a standard issue MTB derailleur, are you sure you couldn't just have bought it from any bike shop? Just match the number of gears and go for it.

Yes it’s just standard 10 speed derailleur. I wanted the new to be identical (not any compatibility issues), so that’s why I bought it straight from the manufacturer. But I could easily just buy something similar from my local bike shop.

Was just wondering cause from seeing some of your videos, you are quite competent at fixing your bike and waiting 2 weeks on an expensive part seemed strange to me. Btw there could be compatibility issues: is it an MTB or road derallieur? Is it Shimano or SRAM standard? So it depends on the shifters and the cassette that are installed. But yeah in your case I think either a Shimano Deore or a SRAM X9 derailleur would fit just fine. P.s. can't wait for you to get the Quattrovelo and make a little review about it! Wish I have the space to get a velomobile over here! Greetings from Germany!
