Happy to see the ASK21 coming on MSFS. I also started flying on this school glider (we had two ones at that time) and did my solo and the final examination on them ten years ago. Then I flew DG505 and Discus CS but the robust, forgiving (and heavy) ASK21 remain in my hearth. A salute from south Switzerland! ❤❤❤❤❤

I know what you mean with that special place in your heart. My first plane was the Blanik L-13. I eventually became a instructor. My first powered aircraft was the Wilga 80 by PZL. I soloed in it after 5 hours of training. I loved them both. I did this all in Ontario Canada.

I spent 28 out of 35 years as a gliding instructor teaching in the ASK21 and ASK13 and have 2,000 hours on gliders. With its wood and fabric wings the ASK13 is great for teaching all of the stall and spinning exercises, whereas the fibreglass ASK21 has better performance and is better suited for teaching soaring skills. It's great to hear that you learnt to fly on gliders, the co-ordinated stick and rudder skills are a proven skill set for both commercial and military flying careers. The ASK21 was the first aircraft that I learned to fly, back in my FSX days. It’s by far my favorite glider. I had the Aerosoft version in FSX. I contacted Aerosoft to see if they had any plans to release it in MSFS. Sadly, they said no. I’m so glad that somebody stepped up to the task and brought it into MSFS.😊

Many years ago I used to fly in a Blanik in Otago New Zealand and your video has got me really interested in this aircraft. I am reminded of the need to constantly plan ahead to ensure you always have a place to land and I remember the thrill of flying in the northwesterly wave that used to develop atop inland mountain ranges. I also like being able to just jump in and fly with little fuss and being challenged to read and manage conditions constantly hands on. Thanks again for a great video.

This is great. I have started flying the ASK21 about 6 Months ago and am looking forward to my first solo flights. Its a great aircraft with nice capabilities. Although this surely is a nice step-up from other simulations, i have found it hard to replicate this feeling in the Sim or even study a bit, maybe this will change. Something I have not yet heared of is having the front "cable-plug" beeing used for Whinch cable ops, we usually use the rear one for our operations. The front one is used for towing and rare other cases in our operations. We also have wheels at both wings, maybe a modification that just our Club has installed. Also, another small correction: The yellow triangle is the minimum speed you need to fly at maximum weight, below that you will risk "stalling". I also thought this in the beginning, but then my Flight Instructor told me otherwise.

Agree, simulating a glider is difficult. There is so much "feeling" involved, the good old "Popometer". I still vividly remember my first solo 12 years ago (I was 15 yo). When the winch cable disconnected I just had to scream out of joy. Luckily no one can hear you up there. Enjoy!!

I spent my first years of aviation on the ASK21 as well. Its a great plane to learn the basics and get the feel for flying. One thing I really do miss in this one, is the typical "clunk" sound when pulling the speedbrake out of its lock. Also the sound of pushing it back in, was a double check for me it was firmly into place. I experienced one time, that during the winch launch the speedbrake wasn't locked well enough and was pulled out partially during the steep climb due to the aerodynamic forces. Dangerous situation that taught me an important lesson: No clunk, no thumbs up before the launch.

Great video. I find it rather frustrating to get into gliders in msfs and the reason undoubtedly is that I don't have a good understanding on how to operate a glider. I'm sure that with the correct knowledge it would indeed be fun but the only way to obtain that knowledge is by watching videos like these from someone with actual expertise. I watch all you other airline videos and they have thought me heaps so would love to see the same for gliders. Thank you.

Nice video! I did log a bunch of time in 2 AS K21s although I started long before that, in the early eighties of last century, flying Blanik L-13, Rhonlerche, Bergfalke and Cobra-15 gliders... Unfortunately flight dynamics wise and soaring weather wise MSFS leaves a LOT to be desired, and that's partially patent in your video... For instance, circling in a thermal seldom results in the expected outcome, and strangely "thermal lift" in MSFS is best profited flying along a straight line, which doesn't make the slightest sense under most RW conditions... Also, the way the "string physics" are programmed in MSFS are quite buggy and then, those gliders I have tried (not this K21 which I do not own) have quite a few glitches, innacuracies, incomplete or wrongly modelled aerodynamic properties :-/ Maybe 2024 brings good news for Soarin (???)

At 10:07 they even included the burn marks on the headrest on the rear seat! When the sun is shining in a specific angle and the rear canopy is opened, it will create a lense effect and burn the headrest ... i always fear that a 21 burns down that way ....

The Probe of the Variometer on the back of the plane is actually rotated by 180 degrees. It should be mounted the other way around. You can mount it that way in the real world, the indications on the next flight then will be crap.

depending on the skill of the pilot and the strength of the thermals, you can get maybe 80km/h average cross country speed, but thats already on the high end. But i have not tried it in the sim yet.

Super Video, wunderschönes Flugzeug, da werden Erinnerungen wach. Habe unzählige Stunden in dem Hobel gekurbelt... Persönlich finde ich an den Windenstart Simulationen schade, dass sie meist "digital" von Anfang bis Ende Fullspeed gehen. Wenn du mit 150km/h bei 50m Sicherheitshöhe so am Knüppel ziehen würdest wie im Video, zerreißt es dir mit Sicherheit die Sollbruchstelle... Und ich finde die Thermik Simulation im MSFS noch sehr basal. Dein Vorflug zurück zum Platz, Mensch im blauen permanent 2m/s steigen ? =) Bin mal gespannt wo die Reise im MSFS für Segelflieger hingeht. Vielen Dank

Apologies for departing from the views expressed but I think this is a very average simulation. The gauges, interior, tow rope connection, speed brakes, tyres and exterior are not particularly well done considering the simplicity of the real ASK21. There are other glider addons that are better and cheaper or free.
