I live in a 3rd world contry, I remember being a kid and my mom got the chance to travel to the US, I always wanted a pair of jordans but we couldn't afford that. To my surprise when she came back, she brought me a black pair of Jordan Mach 3. She didn't bought anything for herself , not even a big mac or something, she wanted to give me the shoes. And for that reason those Jordans will forever be my favorites. Even though I don't have them anymore.

1990 was when I got my first cool pair of shoes. I'd just started middle school and I saw a guy four grades above me wearing a pair of Reebok pump twilight zone's. He was the talk of the school. So I begged my mother for months, and finally on my birthday she took me to JD sports and they had one pair left. It must have been fate because it was in my size. Man, I walked those school corridors like a king lol. Class mates was constantly pumping my shoes up. Back then the original twilight zone had a full foot pump. Unfortunately the retros only have it in the tongue/midfoot.

March 93…I’ll never forgot, was in 3rd grade. My Dad got me the Jordan’s 8. I didn’t even know who MJ was. But when I wore them to school ahhh man the looks compliments and head turns I got. These are beautiful, chris. I almost bought an original pair a few months back. I'm petty sure they would hold up under feet. I bought some shoes a few weeks ago from 96 and I've worn them a few times. Get em on your feet and enjoy them. Relive the memories. Thanks for sharing those memories. Hey NW (and Mrs Wing)! Similar story, I caught on when kids started giving me a hard time about my no brand Reebok Pumps (I think they were ‘Sonic’ brand?) in the 5th grade in 96. I tore my ACL that year and the physio grabbed my shoe and twisted the hell out of it and said I needed better torsional support, so mum took me shopping and I got a pair of black and white Nike Air Barrage mids (I had no idea they were a turf shoe here in Australia). She followed them with Nike More Uptempos when I wore through them. (Yes, I now have both those pairs in adult sizes).

I often look back and I am amazed that she pulled it off. I was gonna list some of my first name brand sneakers she was able to get me but it turned into a thought of appreciation for my mother. So, I just want to thank her here publicly. Thank you mom and I love you 😘.

Oshman's....you're taking me back Chris to my younger days growing up in LA. Mervyn's, Oshman's, got quite a few of my kicks from those places back in the day. First pair of Name brand shoes: Air Jordan 1s, in the black and blue color way. Blue was my favorite color, so getting the jordan's in that color was awesome. After that it was the Magic Johnson Converse Weapons. Growing up in the 80s in LA, as a Laker fan, it was the shoe to get.

Hi Chris, my very first pair of name brand shoes was Adidas D Rose 5. I got them after I watch your D Rose 5 performance review. I've been a fan of yours since 2014. It was in my first year of highschool (in 2015-2016), my dad bought me that shoes so I can join my highschool's basketball team. Yes, I'm a young sneakerhead. I'm 21 now. I didn't have that shoes anymore because I gave them away to my bestfriend who needs a basketball shoes at the time. It has a special place in my heart, sneakers and basketball were the things that made my highschool days the best days of my life. Anyway, love the vids and the story telling. Keep up the good work 🙏❤

I remember the 3 pairs of name-brand shoes that got me through high-school. My first pair was the Converse Backjam mid in white teal & grape; those heel react juice pods were so dope right until they popped. My next pair was a pair of Nike Air Force Max CB in white black and pure purple; straps were the shit! And those massive heel unit? So cool….right until they popped. Then my final pair that got me to graduation were the Reebok Ice Preacher; they are still IMHO, THE coolest sneakers ever, and I pray that Reebok will retro them at some point.

This is what it’s all about. That sewn in Nike air on the back reminds me of drooling over the air Jordan five grape. Until then I was a stride Rite and L.A. Gear kid. You just brought me back man. From there on out I used all of my birthday money every year and Christmas money To pick up Jordans. My mother thought it was so foolish are you to spend that on a sneaker. The nostalgia is real in this video, and makes me remember why it is such a big deal but they brought back the Nike air on all the retros. Im from the philippines and we cannot afford those branded shoes but I am already aware of them because of our well off neighbors. Always wanted to have a swoosh on my shoes so I would just draw them up using pentel pens haha! Then my grandparents were able to migrate to the US and during my 3rd grade (i think), they sent me and my brother this Nike Air Mega Force! Mines white/blue and my brothers white/gray. That was 1989. Back then, here in the Philippines, if u have Nikes, U are already special. Still have my love for Kicks especially the 90s and since i have a job now and can afford to buy them, been racking them up via thrift stores and 2nd hand sellers. Still cant afford to buy brand new ones but even though most of them are beaters, I still cop them due to the fact that they are the ones that I always wanted then, but cannot afford them... So dunno if I am just wasting my money but to me, seeing them and knowing that I got them, it feels like the therapy that I needed... Haha!

As a little kid I didnt really get expensive shoes. But No one in my neighborhood did so we didnt really know the difference. I usually had pumas or converse all stars, diadoras, or british knights. But I remember my first pair of expensive shoes to this day. They were some white and blue Nike Air Revolutions. And they had a orange square nike tag that came on them. My mom got them from City Sports here in Chicago. And they cost $72.00. This was around 1986 or 87 and, that was a astronomical number for us back in the day. The next day I crossed the street with out looking and just missed getting hit by a car. My mother and grandmother saw it, they screamed, and them they screamed at me. And I was in trouble. My mother remember's me telling her "I have my shoes on. They make me run faster. Or else I would have got hit". She laughed at me. And that saved me from getting whooped.

I felt the pure emotion from this, I completely understand. My first name brand pair was the Black and Red Flu Game the year they came out! I was in 6th grade and my mom won a scratch off and got my brother and I our first pair of Jordans and IT. WAS. AMAZING. only the boys at my school cared, but i was (is) a tomboy so those things were perfect! I wore them until I grew out too them which was the end of my 7th grade year. I can relate to both of your stories, so much. I don’t feel bad anymore. I wasn’t the only child in American to come from a divorce or single parent home. ( both my case, at different times in my life) All my friends had both parents at home. Shoes was where I could “level” the playing field, so to speak. So I would work cutting lawns after school and in the summer just to have money to buy shoes. My real dad came from out of nowhere and gave me $100.00 dollars for my birthday one year. I went out and bought the Air Jordan 6 infrared. I was the talk of my six grade that year. That’s where it all started for me. Never looked back since then! Lol!

My first pair was an Adidas Nite Jogger in this cool black colored upper and a metallic purple/blue midsole. I frickin loved them and I beat them to the ground that summer. Lately I've started to kind of grow an addiction and I currently have 8 different shoes. I've bought 4 of them during the summer and I'm currently trying to get some AJ 1 highs or fours. Hey Chris, my name is William from Taiwan. As a kid I never knew and owned a pair of name brand kicks until I had the chance to stay in the states. My father served in the Air Force, back at a time people serving the country doesn't get paid well, (now they get paid better but no respect, jeez..) So naturally I wouldn't be able to get a pair of brand shoes. That changed after my father got assigned to the states for Taiwan Air Force as logistic commander for F-16, and he took his whole family with him. I still remember, December 1993, arriving at the biggest winter storm for the past twenty years Ohio has faced at the time, he took us shopping for winter gear. In the mall, i was staring at a full sized Shawn Kemp ad, and my dad just smiled at me and got me a pair of Reebok Vertical. That was my first pair of name brand shoe. And it was the shoes that led me to the world of basketball. Before we got back to Taiwan, I got another pair, it was Nike air modified force mid. Still hurts not being able to keep my hands on the shoes, due to something went wrong and lost a bunch of boxes from the container.

My first pair of "name brand" shoes were the original Shaq Attack 1s in the white/royal blue colorway. Air Jordans were obviously the best line of shoes available, but the Shaq line was right behind it in popularity. Reebok's use of carbon fiber and OG hexalite in the heel and forefoot in the later models was the first of its kind at the time. Then throw in the Instapump with the little yellow C02 gun and Reebok easily dominated Nike tech-wise in my opinion. I was lucky enough to get a pair of retros and I still feel like a kid when I wear them. Ahhh the memories!

I think mine were the new balance 530, back in early 2000s. "Cow" color with black on white. Insanely comfy. Wore them out - mesh torn, sole uneven, reached the point they hurt to walk in from daily usage. Comfort > fashion learned with the costs of things.

I didn’t become a sneakerhead until later in life, but shoes were still really important to me in elementary/middle school. We didn’t have much, but I was still booming with pride when it was time to go to our local clothing store and pick out my one pair of shoes I’d get for the year. My grandma would always make sure I’d get a pair of Nikes. Not Air Jordans or anything like that, but it didn’t matter to me: It was a pair of Nikes, lower end Nikes or not. When I became old enough to understand the importance of sneaker culture and that nice things cost money, I’d read that Eastbay catalog with mixed emotions, jealously and sadness, because I realized that the one pair of Nikes I’d get weren’t the cool Nikes. I suppose that’s a big reason why I’ve become a sneakerhead now that I am older and more established in my career: I can get the shoes I always wanted, even the same models. It’s a beautiful thing, and it’s helped me connect with students too.

Was on sale at that time and in the white, black, grey and luminous pink colourway, I was like on cloud 9 as it was the 1st top branded sneakers I had owned as a teenager. The Flights had a massive following in the UK and great colourways available at that time. This year is the 30th anniversary of the SC IIs and Nike missed out on retroing these. Alot of sneakers for your money 👊🏻❤💎

Oshman's. Man, that brings back so many memories. Glad to see that you were able to re-obtain the model of your first pair of Nikes. My first pair of Nikes was a discounted pair of all white Nike mid or high tops back in late 1980's. And props to Mrs. Wing for the Madonna tribute. :)

The Sonic Flights were my first pair as a kid too. I was in 4th grade. Wore the rubber down at the heel. I remember even inside the sole there was like little bubbles or round chambers. So bouncy and comfy. So many good memories with these kicks. I would love to see these reissued in it's original form, I would cop two pairs.

Being in the LA area and fresh off the lakers 3-peat, I LOVED it when my parents got me a pair of Shaq’s (not Reebok) man I felt like I could go outside and play just like him, I was 8 and would only get a new pair of shoes once a year

My firsts were a pair of canvas Puma Baskets in Navy with a white form stripe. Simple/basic shoe that I bought myself in high-school after drooling at Puma Cell shoes in the mall (I grew up outside the US and Puma was the only name brand store in the country). It was what I could afford and even that was fancy for sure. I wore those in to the ground! And if Puma ever makes and sells them in the US again I will be buying a pair. And Puma is still my go-to brand.

My first Nike shoes were the Flight Falcons. They had an all black nubuck upper with a white swoosh. I didn't know it at the time but they shared the same sole with the Jordan 4. I loved the Flight logo on the tongue, visible air unit in sole and the embroidered Nike Air on the heel. After wearing nothing but JC Penney shoes I thought they were the coolest things ever. They were retroed a few years ago but they didn't make an all black pair like I had. Maybe someday.

I remember my older brother bought me a pair of Bred 13's and he got my twin brother the Ken Griffey sneakers. It was definitely the first time I had a name brand shoe and I'll never forget it.

My first pair of shoes is the adidas tmac 2 white and black colorway. This was in my high school days. My Father bought it for me and that pair is already gone but still I won't forget it because it's a special gift coming from my Father.

I had reeboks in elementary I think, but I remember getting the Air Max Milano in 9th grade. It was my first Air Max. It was in sale and it was all I could afford. When people saw them they were asking where I got them! It was my first time being asked about my shoes in a good way. I can hardly find pics of it,, there are no listings of it. I wish nike would retro it 😫. I trashed my pair back then but I know better now. That shoe is a grail for me. I'm glad you found yours. Great story.

First pair of name brand player endorsed shoes were the Fila Grant Hill 2s with the patent leather like stripe going all around the outside of the shoe making it look like a triangle. My parents got me those when they hit Marshalls for like $50, so I'm sure the new Grant Hills had come out by then, but I remember feeling so cool that I had a pair of shoes that a player played in.

Such a feel-good story/video right here, amazing! First pair I ever got was in 2002 when my mom and I went to Mervyn's (for anyone who still remember) and my first pair of Nikes were the ACG Barlow. Loved them so much and wore the hell out of them and refused to get new shoes for the 8th grade until my mom said "you seriously need to buy new shoes." The next shoe was what got me into shoes and was picked out by my brother at The Athlete's Foot: the Air Max Specialist in black and silver leather, which my friend said it was the "Terrell Owens and Mike Vick shoes" before I even knew anything about signature shoes. Then I funnily thought that my first shoes, the ACG Barlows, were endorsed by 49ers RB Kevan Barlow, LOL

My first Nike's were like a canvas Blazer, real cheap. But my first Nike Air shoes were in about 1991 Air Trainer III in a white with grey plastic hits...and I did exactly what Chris did, just walked around looking at my feet. 😊😊😊

It was the Nike Air Garnett 1 black/blue/white pair that my mom bought for me. Those were my very first original and branded shoes I had. I only wore them inside the house at first because I didn't want them to get dirty. Then I wore them until the sole and air unit crumbled. I can't wait until they get a retro from Nike.

I’ll never forget my 1st pair of Air Max, the classic BW in approx 1992 in Cream / Sail / Black nubuck. I wore them til the soles fell off.
