If your camera has a 3.5mm in, you can use the line out on the zoom h1 (also 3.5mm) and connect it directly to your camera, eliminating the need for syncing audio in post with the same audio quality you'd get otherwise

In FCP your audio was actually a tad off sync still. When both tracks are synced, you shouldn't hear any echo, the voices should overlap so perfectly that it should sound like 1 track. If there is an echo, one is playing just fractions before the other. The more ya know!
@eschelar10 жыл бұрын
There are plugins like Pluraleyes (and apparently the new Premiere Pro CC now has this natively) that can help with this too, but it's not really at all difficult to use a few claps. One thing that can really help in some programs is being able to choose to move through based on audio time units vs frame by frame. I've used frame level syncing for tons of quick and dirty projects and usually it's close enough that it doesn't feel awkward. I'm not a Final Cut user, but as a Premiere Pro user (CS6), on the Timeline panel, there's a selector at the top right. There is an option there to "Show time units". Then you can find your peaks that show the clapping, zoom in reallllly close and line them up. You will have to remember to move the Audio clip since the source audio will probably be linked to the video at this point and video clips cannot more in less than one frame. Audio clips sure can though and this will let you sync perfectly. Remember that if you are recording directly into the camera for some shots for some reason, you will probably be setting your camera mic level to one above the lowest level, so remember to make sure your camera mic level is set properly or you won't have that garbage track to sync your peaks to. Another tool is to use a "gain" normalization technique if your garbage audio is too quiet. that can help you find your peaks.

When I was looking for something to improve audio, I saw this video and began researching the H1. Long story short, I bought it and it works great. Obviously there are better and more expensive alternatives, but for basic things, the Zoom H1 is awesome. It's only about $100. I actually use it to record my podcast.

@themightythor1212 The button you are pressing on the camera isn't actually the zoom function. It is a way for you to view a close up of the shot you are trying to take so you can make sure the sections you are looking at are in focus. Zoom is taken care of by the lens itself. If you say only had a fixed 50mm lens you wouldn't be able to zoom at all.
@AndyRosebrook12 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm wondering about this. It would be so much easier to just plug it through the camera, set it and forget it. What it comes down to is that the camera has to really squish and compress the audio down to be able to record it at the same time as the HD video, you're going to get more of an MP3 artifacty type sound. Might be worth it however for the convenience in a lot of simple videos.
@dallasbagley13 жыл бұрын
Haha, I have your SAME exact set up! But instead of the 135, I have the 18-200! Got the entire kit (body, lens, sd card, bag and strap) from Costco for $1250. The camera is excellent, and the 50mm lens is a lot of fun!
@WorldClimb12 жыл бұрын
Any thing visually and audibly precise. As long as you can hear it the level of audio doesn't matter. You just need something to line up the visuals with the sound. And yes it does have to be done each time you use a remote recording device.

great lighting! just one thing, when you talk about depth of field, it is concerned with, at a given focusing setting (e.g., if the subject is 10 feet from lens), the nearest and the farthest part of the subject that can be rendered sharp. so if the subject has a small area in which it stays in focus/sharp, it is described as a shallow depth of field (not huge depth of field).

@Zayonoesgracioso Yes it does but that doesn't stop the hiss. The hiss is caused by the preamps in teh camera not just the firmware's AGC. People have plugged in 1000s worth in microphones into this camera and had the same problem. I have the camera and the mic... still a hiss. You have to drop levels down to 1 over off to stop the hiss... Regardless high quality audio from a second source will always be better than running it through the camera itself.

Kind of an old reply, but you can run the h1 into the input as long as you disable auto gain control. I have a t3i and never noticed that it was the only canon DSLR that magic lantern can't disable auto gain control, so I have to sync in post.

I prefer the stock lens over a 50mm although 50mm is sharper and better looking it's just that zooming is pain in the but and also lacks focus as it is a fixed lens. I used to always want to shoot with a shallow depth of field and now come to think of it, my videos look better and are easier to shoot with f/3.5-5.6 with a few minor adjustments. I prefer zoom and ease of focus over the DOF. I've seen big budget movies shot without using a shallow depth and they look amazing. My opinion of course

My question to you is this? What kind of settings on the Zoom H1 did you use? WAV or MP3? Lo Cut: on/off? Auto Level: on/off? And then what is a good audio level for an interview in db levels. Next question would be what about using the mic out and into the camera so I don't have to sync? Or is that something you don't recommend? I'm going to be doing some interviews of athletes post race and trying to figure out the best way? Thanks for your help?
@ElvannReacts9 жыл бұрын
Jamie Hines I know it was asked a while ago but in case it can still help: About the WAV format is lossless, you ideally want to always record in WAV. Though you might want to record in mp3 if it is 1. Something you don,t really plan on keeping and you don't care som much about the quality of it, or 2. You think your content is long enough to bust you memory card size and you need so save some space. Low Cut on/off : Honnestly It is not so important. It depends on what you are going to record, and it depends it you plan on editing your track in an audio program. If you are going to record your voice and you don't plan on making any more EQ move on your track afterwards, you should probably put it on. If you record a musical instrument and/or plan on making a custom EQ, you might want to pull it off. But again it all depends. Basically what is does is it cuts some of the low frequencies, which is ideal for higher instruments like the voice, violin and flute (and more obviously). Auto-Level: looks like the same answer than last question -> if you don't use a compressor afterward, you might want to turn it on to make the sound more equal. (Assuming auto-level is a sort of build in compression). If you are going to edit and are picky about what type of compressor you want, you might just want to put it off. :) I'm not too sure about the other questions, but I hope it helps a bit!

Thanks, this was a very simple and clear explanation and - more importantly - demonstration of synching! Appreciate it!
@epiem11 жыл бұрын
There are many reasons this can happen. - if you are using different frame rates in a single sequence, it might drop sync - cheaper recorders sometimes have bad internal clocks and can lose sync - some recorders sync for 25 or 30 fps instead of 23.976 or 29.970 fps or vice versa - some cameras record at 25 or 30 fps instead of 23.976 or 29.970 - and more.... Fixes: Google "how to conform footage" and try to find the solution that best fits your issue depending on the software you have.

Thank you! Could you share how to simply connect the DSLR to your Zoom recorder without any other external mics?
@Calvindance8211 жыл бұрын
I'm curious why you don't use the Merge Clips tool to sync your audio and video clips in Final Cut, as opposed to having to bring them into the timeline. I mean, the way you're doing it works fine, but I prefer to use the Merge Clips tool right in the bin and not have to worry about bringing stuff into the timeline to sync. Of course, the easiest way would actually be to just use Pluraleyes and skip this whole messy process altogether.

@Zayonoesgracioso I wouldn't. Plugging anything into the camera means you are at the mercy of the cameras low quality preamp. Pretty much any microphone you put through the 60D will create a nice loud hiss. The best way is to record audio on a separate device and sync in post. Do as they do in Hollywood

@MrHofda Really depends. You will always get better results using a separate audio recorder. Its how its done in Hollywood after all. You can always use magic lantern but remember you are at the mercy of the cameras firmware as far as audio bitrate/compression is concerned. My advice is to record uncompressed wave on the external recorder and sync up in post. Why go for second best :)

I use Adobe Audition, but Audacity almost certanly has that effect too. Type "audacity normalise" into Google. Dont raise the level too much because you will get much more noise. I read post from some guy who was suggesting to use even as low as 20. Since I record very loud sources I use level 16 (because under 16 digital reduction kicks in). I do not own the H1 long enough to play "smartass" here, so I will just suggest to try it out and see how it goes ;) For wind I bought wolfwindshields H1.
