10 years later, but just stumbled across this and thought it was cool. I'm about to start making a 3D model using vintage post office boxes and this came up in my search. The bank is very cool and I hope you still have it... and I will add that I'm bewildered by the dislikes here.

It's still on my bookshelf! It's about half full of coins from the last decade lol

To open this box: 1) Turn the knob three spins clockwise. After third pass, stop on the first letter. 2) Turn the knob counter-clockwise, passing the second letter once. Stop on the second letter on the second time around. 3) Turn the knob clockwise and stop as soon as you reach the third letter. 4) Turn the lower knob counter-clockwise and the door will pop open.

mine has a 5 letter combo how does that work ?
@Tycedi9 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Pommrehn If your PO box looks like this, the five letters you have is not a five letter combination. For example, if your combo is AB DE G, you should stop the knob halfway between the AB, halfway between the DE, and then on the G. I hope that helps.

My post office still has these from the 50's. They are really worn out looking. The doors can be bought for $10 bucks on ebay if you don't care if they lock. I have one from 1958

I have the combination of letters to use and the directions to turn the dial. Is there an amount of turns needed in each direction?

My fiancée has a similar post office box and it’s has a bunch of coins in it and I offered to help my fiancée to open it up but I am not good with letter or number combination locks
@accordinglyryan11 жыл бұрын
Right three times to clear everything. Then turn it clockwise and stop on the first number (or letter.) Then turn counterclockwise to the second.Then clockwise to the last, and it should open. Just like any other combo lock.

By the way people, if you want one of these, the doors themselves are pretty affordable, about $10+ on eBay. Pre-made boxes are also on there for like $20. Or, you can get the whole shabang for ~$70.

The dial I have is 1-8. On the bottom labeled combination : RT 1/2 LT 6/7 ANY IDEA HOW TO OPEN IT ? Not sure if that is a 1 or a / between the 6& 7. Thanks

Nice! My college had these at its post office, except they were converted to key operation. The keyhole was where the combination knob would have been. I thought it was weird that they would have used letters for lock combinations.

That doesn't make sense. At least with mine, it's three letters only (or halves, ex: H 1/2 instead of H) For example, it could be F - A - H, or F 1/2 - A 1/2 - H 1/2
