I am the same way with being unable to separate rockabilly/pinup from the 50s! I too started dressing vintage with those looks, but my true passion is the 30s and 40s and I am ever so grateful to my good friend Lana for clueing me in to the amazing reproduction companies in the UK. I cannot believe there aren’t any companies in the US that cater to this market - 99% are rockabilly and pinup. I really have a hardcore dream of starting a reproduction company here in the US, it would be a dream come true 💖 But alas...MONEY 😂😂😂😭

I'm really trying to separate those things in my mind because when I see 50s done right, I adore it. I'm watching Lovecraft Country right now and it's really making me start to see the fashion differently. I agree that we need more quality reproduction clothing in the US, I hope that someday that comes to pass.

The Glambassador Me too! Perhaps I’ll become friends with someone rich who would like to invest in a vintage repro company in the US 🤔 Oh well, a girl can have the greatest of dreams, can’t she? 😂❤️

I know people who follow you on Facebook and Instagram get to see a lot of your outfits. I think it would be neat to have a video showing a week's worth of looks, down to the hairstyle you chose to go with it, accessories and all that. Maybe even a vintage "must haves" for someone wanting to get some key items to start their vintage collection. 😁

Iloved your evolution story!! I am plus sized myself and found I never fitted into any kind of style, for years now I've been wanting to dress in 1930s and 40s clothing but figured it probably wouldn't suit me. Seeing your amazing style and wanting to improve my sewing skills I finally feel able to start dressing how I've always wanted to!!! I look forward to binge watching your videos :) and I'm now subscribed too so yaaay!!

There’s so so much I loathe about the “rockabilly” scene however to be fair the rockabilly subculture is more based on the music more so than the fashion I would say. The people just into it for the fashion, (cherry print) to me don’t truly and honestly get it. A lot of people in the scene are people who seriously only collect obscure 45’s ( there’s so much from that time period not just in the style of Elvis and people way ahead of their time r&b, countrified rockabilly, popcorn) of the music from that time and don’t always or ever dress up. A lot are DJ’s, mid century collectors, and record collectors.

So happy to have this introduction to your vintage journey. I always feel like I'm sitting down with a good friend when I watch your videos, so thank you for that! We all need friends in this unpredictable and isolating time. I would love to see something on your hair care routine, perhaps? You mentioned you wash it once a week (!) and I'd love to see the products you use and how you treat your hair between washes. And now that you're in Oahu, what you have had to do to change that routine (hello, wind and humidity!). Thanks again and looking forward to the next video!

You are amazing! Thank you. I vicariously live though you. My Cousin is the infamous Marilyn Monroe I always loved the way that she looked and that’s where my love of the 40s 50s came from. I have been fascinated with The classic look that she had she didn’t wear a lot of patterns she wore more solids because of them being able to go from one area to another and it’s much easier to find vintage in solid colors. So thank you for what you do as I said in the beginning you were amazing and beautiful.

It's not to say that plus size vintage can't be found, but in my experience it's generally sizes 14-18. It's much hard for those of us at the high end of the size chart.

I love makeup tutorials, reviews and correct historical application suggestions! The tour of your closet was so amazing! Why not a video about coordinating items? I find that that is something I really struggle with. A lesson on getting custom fabric options on eshakti, a feature on the seamstress that created your beautiful new dress (posted on the Authentic 40s group) and oh my gosh, I’m in Florida so there’s not really a Fall here (or in Oahu) i would love to see some videos on blending tropical and autumn fashions/colors to make a region appropriate Fall outfit 😭😂 i know you have shown us your wet set , and my hair looked so nice following your guide! I would love to see more hair tutorials. Sometimes, women that have been into vintage style or reenacting for years, forgets that there are ladies new to the aesthetic or new to reenacting. There are so many basic things I’m learning and even the simplest stuff is helpful.

Casey Butler thank you Casey, these are all wonderful suggestions. I have a few videos in process now that fit some of these ideas, but I’ll add the rest to my list and see what I can do. I agree, there are things that those of us who’ve been doing this for a while, that take for granted as easy or routine, but it’s hard to pull out what those things are since they are just in our regular routine. Do you have any specific questions or ideas on what you’d like to know or learn about? Since my journey started so long ago, it’s hard for me to put myself in the shoes of people just coming to the style, but I’d love to help. If it’s easier, you can shoot me an email at theglambassador@chronically-overdressed.com Thanks again for your wonderful suggestions.

Some ideas for women new to vintage style, and want to be authentic- coming from a newb - shoes. I know there are many companies out there that have amazing shoes. American duchess, Memery, Bait, and many others, but what about ladies with odd shaped feet? Also a review of your favorite place to get shoes and your least favorite place? - Belts :) There are so many belt options as well as buckles. SO MANY. It would be nice to have a video on maybe three belt shapes/styles/buckles that will give you an authentic look every time. - Actually, a video on four standard looks (seasonal?) that will give you an authentic look every time. That would come in handy. - Accessories (broaches, earrings, necklaces, etc) You have an amazing collection of accessories that you’ve gathered over the years. I live in a vintage dead zone. There isn’t much here at all, so it would be a help to know some of your online suggestions for authentic (or accurate repro) accessories. - Favorite makeup. I like reviews, maybe other people would do. - Again, I really love clothing reviews and suggestions, being a big girl, I can never seem to find authentic vintage clothes in my size. It can get really discouraging. Oof, and trying to find foundation garments seems to be tricky. Of course I am not saying, “do theeeese”. Just throwing them out there for consideration. Your entire aesthetic is one I love, and I know a wide audience would appreciate.

Oh wow, I finally know why I don't care much for 50s style aesthetics. It's just like you said, its close association with pinup and rockabilly style. It's also that the badly made, generic "vintage" party costumes on eBay, aliexpress & amazon are usually 50s inspired. LOL. I'm so happy to hear you've been able to create authentic looks mostly from reproduction outfits. Did you later make the video compiling your favourite repro companies for plus size women? I neeeeeeeeed ittt 😄 pretty please.

I've been working on a list of reproduction companies who are size inclusive. I'm sorry I haven't finished it yet, it's gotten shoved to the side with other project and just...well...life. But I'll finish it I promise.

I'm sorry to hear you have been feeling a little down at the moment, its a very strange time for us all. I hope things improve for you soon. I've been following you for a few years and it was really interesting to hear your vintage journey. I'm a little older than you, 51, and always assumed you were maybe early to mid thirties. I'm also a plus size and seeing how you put outfits together has really helped me. Thanks for sharing and take care.

I love your style and your inspiring tutorials here. The vintage community on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest was the push to wear vintage. I loved the style of the 50s for so long but thought it is not possible to wear nowadays. With inspiration online I tend to the 40s now with the elegance of the fashion and the effort people took to look good with the struggle of war and restrictions. I rather buy 80sdoes40s dress and vintage accessoires than retro fashion. Keep safe.

I know this video is old but could you maybe do a video on building a vintage-inspired wardrobe for newbies? I'm in an awkward place where I have some cute vintage inspired things but the vast majority of my clothing is still modern and I'm having a hard time putting together outfits with my more modern pieces and vintagey things. So then I end up just defaulting to jeans and a t-shirt if I'm not doing anything but I'd like to be more comfortable wearing vintagey outfits all the time and not feel like I'm "dressing up" or wearing it for a reason

Absolutely! This is something I’ve been working on actually. I’m just trying to get my head around it. But this post is really helpful. It’s hard to know what specific issues people have when just starting out. I loved hearing about your journey to vintage! It's like we are old friends just hanging out with you sitting there like that. I apologize if you've said this before, but how long do you guys plan on staying in Hawaii? Are you there for your husband's work? I'd love to visit Hawaii someday. But I just couldn't live on an island. Unless Manhattan maybe, lol. I would feel so isolated even when it wasn't a pandemic.

Summerafternoon oh thank you, that makes me so happy to hear that my videos feel comfortable. We should be in Hawaii for at least another year, hopefully not much longer than that. Yes, we are here for my husbands job. Visiting Hawaii is vastly different from living here, so don’t let my dislike of Hawaii sway you from visiting. It is quite isolating for many reasons.

Hello. I just wanted to reach put and share that I had a ww2 era raising too. My grandmother raised me and she was born in 1925. I participate in classic car shows and I'm just getting into the 40s and 50s era as far as vintage. I kinda am in rockabilly but I feel like I'd like to be more polished. I like the spirit of rockabilly but I'd like to polish out some of the rough edges with it. I like especially the late 40s, early 50s about up to '57 at the latest. I've started getting little retro inspired things but I feel like I've plunged into a sea of vintage but I'm kinda overwhelmed. I have a vague idea of the direction I'd like to go. Do you have any advice for beginners like me?
@TheGlambassador
@TheGlambassador 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, it can be overwhelming. My best advice is start collecting inspiration. I love using Pinterest for this. Start creating boards for your interests and pin loads of photos, blog posts and guides. Then go back and evaluate what you've saved. You'll start to see your style emerge from the pins you've selected. Then you can start narrowing things down on eras, maybe for seasons or specific garments. I have a video with tips on Creating your own Personal Style. Maybe that will help get you started.
