Chris is a rare thing these days - a younger person who actually "gets" the fascination with history. As such, I've always enjoyed his presentations, even though I'm probably twice his age. Good on you, Chris. Appreciate the effort as always! - Ed on the Ridge
@henryhallfan Жыл бұрын
Hey there Chris! The pipes on the lower portion of your Cabin's bulkhead were actually fed hot water, essentially acting as a radiator. The bathroom originally had these in there too, and were generally used to heat up towels that were strung across them. However you were close with your guess in regaurds to luggage. On the wardrobe doors you opened earlier in the video, if you look to the very bottom of those doors you can see two small metal circles. Those little holes were actually a tie down for you luggage so that in rough weather, your luggage doesn't bang up the inside of the wardrobe and cause a heap of noise. A fun little fact - If you check the underside of the drawers in most cabins, they usually still have pencil markings and inscriptions from the servicemen during the Second World War! Glad you enjoyed your stay aboard the Mary, she truly is the last of her kind!

I stayed once in one of the "full suites" for a long weekend. I spent 3 days just expolring the ship. There was so much to be seen and experience! It was like stepping back in time. It still is one of my best travel experiences. Thank you so much for this and the other tour video!!! This ship is an absolute and invaluable historic treasure. Your showcasing her will help preserve her historical significance.

My late Grandpa gave me his 1930's dresser, which had cigarette burns from when he'd forgotten them on the top, it's a beautiful art deco style. He also gave me his 1936 RCA (still fires up). He was a member of the greatest generation, and a WWII veteran. I also have a 1938 English walnut armoire, that was made in England. I have a 1926 Robbins Meyers fan as well. That think is built like a tank and will blow your hair back. Things were built to last back then.

The woodwork on big ships is so beautiful, I went on the ship Elise docked in Galveston years ago, I was so over whelmed by the wood on that ship, like ebony or something.
@cplcabs Жыл бұрын
Yes. I feel that at some point in the future the owners will use all that wood in the ship as a spark for an insurance claim when they decide its not viable to keep the ship and they have lost money.

Love this room... So truly from that era.....love the quirks in the design..all done for a purpose both design and practicality.... I agree with you. I wouldn't want to break anything ...care must be taken..many of those details would need custom made replacements..like the bakelight cabinet handles.....I'm sure many of those details like the attached soap dish to keep things from moving around during rough seas....

Thank you for sharing your stay there at that beautiful ocean liner there in Long Beach, CA. There were some great ships back then before and the survivers after the World War Two. Now a days, the Cunard Cruise Line is the only one that is left from the old days.😊 Then in the 1950s over ino the 1960s, we crossed over from piston aircraft to the jet age! But I still love seeing ocean liners come into New York.😊

That fan is real cool. Obviously could never be built now since you can stick your fingers in. I remember having a fan like that when I was in my early teens. The fan I had is not that old, probably from the mid 60s. But you know what people just knew not to put their fingers in them. You didn't need protection lick nowadays.
@eily_b Жыл бұрын
We had a smaller fan for the table from my parents from the 60s that had no protective cage around it. The propeller was plastic though but it still hurt when you accidentally touched the moving and nearly invisible propeller and it happened a lot to us. 😃

If you’re still there, go to the porthole in your room and look at the bottom. There’s actually a wood panel you can pull up that was used to darken the room from daylight instead of those little curtains.

I visited there when the Spruce Goose was still in the big round building nearby. Then, 15 years or so later, my husband took me to say there when our daughter was about 54 years old. Interesting ship, I loved it, but after having been on cruise ships to Mexico it wasn't nearly so interesting. I was spoiled.

Those air vents are dirty and grimy - how sad. I booked my brother and sister in law on QM in Long Beach for one night, and they seemed to enjoy their stay. I love that the bathroom had hot salt water in the bath! Must have been cool when it worked. I'll be sailing on a transatlantic crossing on the Queen Mary 2 next year. I will be looking at all the unique features on the newer version!

The hardware on the sinks is all modern. There would have been a hot tap on the left, a cold tap on the right and no attached soap dish where the hot tap would have been.
@Bbbuddy11 ай бұрын
It’s the only earthquake-proof hotel in SoCal. That room was originally a second or third class cabin (or a servant’s cabin) thats been reconfigured with modern wall covering and to fit modern hotel beds. It would originally have had several bunks. First class passengers didn’t need ironing boards. The deep tub and attached soap dish are because the ship would have been pitching and rolling on the North Atlantic. That’s also why all the cabinets latch. Actually, the first class rooms on A and B decks are much more opulent and fully lined with vintage wood. They are nearer to the center of the ship’s length to reduce the motion felt by the occupants.

There's a certain YT channel that has many videos on the QM. I've had several disagreements with the owner of the channel who feels that the QM is a star attraction. As I pointed out, the QM has to compete with six theme parks, a plethora of tourist draws, a world class museum district, dozens of 5 star hotels and hundreds of 4 star hotels. The city, who owns the QM, hasn't made money on the ship and I fear it may be turned into a reef within the next 30 years, unless it is towed to somewhere on the Gulf Coast where it can be a star attraction.

I kind of get what you mean, & Chris did mention some guests wanting a modern Ritz-type hotel room. But preserving the 1930's originality of the ship is a tough task. Some of the features, to make them pristine, would have to be re-created with brand-new parts, which for accuracy might be almost impossible to do. Reviving blue prints & assembly-line techniques from over 80 years ago would be a nightmare. The toilet, for example, by modern standards, looks funky, even dingy. But how would a replacement be done & what would it look like? The QM's namesake, the QM2, built in 2002, looks shinier & way fancier in a 21st-century way. It's slicker than the QM1. But so would a new glass-box mansion built in Bel-Air compared with Hearst Castle in central Calif. However, I can easily see the QM2 of 2002 eventually becoming a stationary structure like the QM of 1934 is. The QM2 probably will work better than the Queen Elizabeth 2 does from the late 1960s (around the time the QM was retired) & now a hotel in Dubai.
@Ganiscol Жыл бұрын
@@gridley Make no mistake, by far not everything is original as she was built. There was war service as well as 20 years of cruise ship service after the war. Its hard to tell what is as built and what was modified later. But basically anything that was done during active service can be considered 'original', with everything done after is considered preservation or renovation.
@yamsi12 Жыл бұрын
Not sure if it’s still there but if I recall on B deck there is a section of corridors that is wallpapered white, covering up the wood veneer. I think it was dont in the late 70s early 80s when Hyatt ran the hotel. Was such a shame. Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to do that.
@cplcabs Жыл бұрын
Yeah, its looking shabby. Watching the other video he showed the paintwork peeling (even on the funnels), the lifeboat looked in a bad state, a lot of places look grimy. I also understand the main pool is basically a no go area now. They really are not looking after the ship, which is a shame.

The cost to maintain the ship in a floating condition is prohibitive by itself…the cost to “restore” is impossible to fathom. Enjoy and absorb history and stop wasting the effort on nagging about fantasy. I have stayed on board as well as have been to a number of events on the QM, and IMO was well worth the time and money to visit another time in a ship that likely won’t survive for much longer in its present state. The Ritz is a nice hotel, but you’ll pay 4-5 times the rate for a full suite on the QM and IMO get less for the experience.
