The “pipe” in the bass drum, is apart of Rogers “Memoriloc” Tom mount. Enabled a huge amount of hardware to be added and dispersed the weight to the floor. It became an iconic part of the Rogers brand from the Fullerton California era. I hope this helps! The drums are great ! The copper finish is repairable but isn’t easy.

Wow, that’s wild! Thanks for the info! I always assumed it was a DIY thing that the previous owner did. I would rather have a nice mahogany finish than the copper, if it’s possible.

Yes the pipe is a important part of the Rogers tom mount. Because the mount has two inline bolts if you mount a large tom to one side it could start wearing on the shell. Also if you have the other Rogers tom arm you can take the two parts that go into the tom and make a single tom mount with them. Instead of the large triple mount you're using now. It will look more streamline. Just a thought. Drums and your playing sound great. Thanks for sharing.

The center rod in the kick holds the top of the drum up from the weight of the 14” tom. The 24” kick inherently has less structural rigidity than than a 20” or 22” from top to bottom pressure. The 24” kick here may be a candidate for out of round syndrome. Nice kit!

Nice kit. Slingerland is one of those companies that I wish would've never folded up. They were the Tama of their day for hardware and also made great sounding drums. And today in general, the vast majority for vintage drums on the Internet sale sites are out of round swelled shells, stripped out hardware, drilled shells which serve no purpose, lifting wrap etc. Yet most sellers either won't disclose that or have no idea what's going on and what they are selling other than something "vintage".....which they automatically post for top dollar.

I bought my copper Slingerland’s in 1973. Had to order them - 24, 18, 16, 14, 13, 5x14 Sound King snare and I still have them. They have been gigged regularly and in the studio. Currently set up without the 14. Mine have held up very well comparatively with only light “patina” which is Ana big since I gigged without cases. I had them but they would fit in my car and then I just got used to hauling them around like that. Great drums that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Btw, I’m 65 and received them in mid ‘74. PS - all hardware is original or new old stock on the drums. The stands have been replaced except for the snare, throne & HH stands. I upgraded from the tempo king pedal (meh) to a yellow jacket.

Mahogany outer plies on slingerlands were generally used with wrapped drums, because the rough texture of the mahogany helped the glue bond to the wrap. Non wrapped kits usually had a maple outer ply

Beautiful kit, I've got the 5" Artist snare that matches it. Copper wrap is beautiful, even in the roadworn state of yours, mine miraculously has survived pretty well through multiple owners till I arrived with it 2 years ago. Its a beautiful sounding snare though and a real favourite to take out on jazz gigs. The copper finish is actually copper plated sheet steel, so I'd not dare remove it, it'll cause far more damage than you want, and isn't going to be as easy to remove as a wrap. The wood will break before the metal will. Leave it be.

Proud to say.. I have the full copper Concorde 11N kit!! 12.13.14.15.16.20.24.24. in all its glory! Got it from Rupp's Drums in Denver maybe 2003-4 sometime. It came in used only days before I showed up. I too thought of splitting it up but in the end bought the full double kit.. Since then I've added to it with six amazing copper Slingerland snares, yes the deep bongos, 6,8,10,12 concert toms and added cool 18", 20", and 22" bass drums. **Also have the killer copper 12/14/20 kit! I love all these 3 ply shells with re-rings. My Concorde wasn't in bad shape at all when I got it, and had all the original mounts etc. Some copper blemishes and rashes but it hasn't badly corroded like some others have noted. Some shells on the extra copper drums I've purchased are in fact looking like they were made a only few years ago. Thanks for the video. Look up Copper Slingerlands on Pinterest for the JV Collection of copper Slingerlands and other copper Sling pics I've pulled.

Nice. . . the Pipe thats was in the Bass Drum is to keep the Big Bass Drum from caving in or bulge out due to the weight if the large and heavy toms. I asked my friend about it in the 70's. He got Slingerland 14x26 bass, 12x15 tom, 16x18 and 18x20 floors. . . And now I got the XXXL bug so I'm Frankensteining one. 20x28 bass, 18x20 floor, 14x14 rack tom, vintage hardware and a pipe for the Bass drum once I put a tom on it, It's gonna deform... then try to figure out how to use either North toms or Octobans to keep it look like a mess. . . anyway.... Leave it Vintage and Make it Thunder my friend . . . .

I just got an early 2000's Pearly Reference kit, and I really like how they use the 45/Rounded Edges on the rack toms, and fully rounded on the Floor Toms and kick. They really seem to give me the Mojo I like about some of the older kits. The New Reference Ones supposedly have the same edges but with thinner plies for more resonance, but I honestly like the drier sound of the Original Reference Series.
