Hey Jay Stephen, I must say I love all your videos and even though I'm not always 100% in tune with your perspective, I truly admire your emphasis on historical grounding. I read your book last week and I was so sad once I finished it because you really brought Baldwin II, Melisende and all the other characters to life and I was longing for more. Despite its heavy shortcomings, Kingdom of Heaven had its moments (i.e. the King death scene) I still see Edward Norton's performance as the fictionalized version of Baldwin IV as one of the best of all time. I've thought about what an ideal movie of the crusades would include and there is so much to tell. I love your idea of a 1st crusade trilogy! Another good idea I think, would be the fall of Acre (1291). It would obviously be a dark movie, a la Downfall (which was spellbinding). I've actually written a bit of script, nothing extensive but I think there's an incredible story to be told there. By the way, if you could do a few videos on Baibars, that'd be great! All in all, I really hope you succeed in making this movie. -David

Keep pursuing your dreams and goals! Love this channel. I think my ideal Crusades movie would involve accurately portraying human personalities. What I mean by that is there are financially motivated people, villains, devout religious followers and etc in every military movement with a political/religious foundation. Portray the good and the bad on both sides. It’s like if you took the German miniseries Generation War and combined it with Band of Brothers you get both sides of an intense and complex story. A move that portrays historical honesty that deals with both sides from the glory to the more shameful acts of that makes sense. I’m not a fan of the movies that typically portray the Crusades as “evil” or overly “righteous” I want the honest gritty depiction of human nature if that makes sense? What are your thoughts? And it would be awesome if the movie was made based off of primary sources from both sides. That would be incredible.

Even if I rarely don't EXACTLY agree on a couple of points (Barbarosa and maybe nothing else), I truly hope that you can help craft something that embraces what truly motivated these people. We need a non-modernist, accurate, non-agenda-driven, truth piece. You can do that! You guys are equipped for that! When you were reading knight accounts of King St. Louis IX, priceless! That is something that NO HOLLYWOOD GROUP would do. Please don't give up on this! I have wanted something like this forever but wrote off the possability. The 1st Crusade idea of a trilogy is cool. Baldwin IV aproves of your selection of Montgissard! A Richard piece would be epic! You could get the Knights, Cypress, Saladin, sweet.

Initially, rather than go for one of the offensive Crusades with all the pitfalls of assumed aggression, I suggest the defence of Rhodes in 1480, as subject matter - it has a victorious ending, but could start with a backdrop of the disaster of Constantinople 27 years earlier. The Knights Hospitallers 'star' (so no rabbit holes for Templar oddities). I knew of this event in the early 1970s and imagined it as a movie vehicle for Charlton Heston as Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson. It would provide a reminder that the struggle continued long after the archetypal Crusader Richard I's era, and be a nod to the fact that the enemy is still intent on invasion to this day.

I think a story of the 1st crusade, but create a character for the author of the gesta francorum following the experience of a unit of norman knights. the other is one I've messed around in my head around the time of the fall of Edessa and the second crusade, with a boy and a son of an important knight of the city and an armenian mother who escapes the sack of Edessa, who ultimately either comes into the service of some noble or joins the templars and his ultimate goal is to find and rescue his mother and sister who where taken as slaves from edessa and at some point has to fight his twin brother who was also taken as a slave but was raised as a mamluk. the last one is kind of incoherent but would be a very human small scale story within the whirlwind of the second crusade.

I have to say that I really like this idea and would invest if you want to do a movie on the Crusades. Personally, I think the early history of the Crusades are my favorite. From the calling of the crusades, through Constantinople and the challenging journey to the Holy Land. You could also focus on the personal dynamics between different crusaders. I think it would be great to end with the great campaigns of Baldwin I to establish the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
@patrickbuckley72596 жыл бұрын
Best Idea for a Crusades movie is to create a movie where the Crusaders are depicted as flawed heroes, fighting to defend their way of life from the Muslims, who are depicted as complex villains, who genuinely believe that what they are doing (Conquering the Christian world, oppressing, and murdering all who do not convert) as a good thing. Make it a real Liberty VS. Order battle, except flip the script from pretty much every movie ever made about the Crusades, where it is Islam that represents a Tyrannical force, and the Crusaders who represent the scrappy freedom fighters who are willing to commit heinous act's to defend their ideals and way of life, from said invading tyranny. Rather than focus on the Crusades as a inherently bad thing, giving a more complete pictures of the heroism and atrocity of the era, to ask whether or not they where justified, without giving a yes or no answer. Also I love Arn!

It would be nice to have a movie about the middle ages that actually depicts Europe positively instead of the usual "Look at how stupid, uneducated, uncleanly are ancestors were." Sometimes it feels like the media is trying to make us ashamed of who we were and where we come from. I currently live in China, they are not ashamed of their history, there are so many great movies, depicting characters from the past. Like the cunning tactician Zhuge Liang or the warlord Cao Cao. I absolutely love this channel and point it out to friends who might be interested. It's nice to be able to see my history come alive so untarnished with defamation. Real Crusades History This is in reference to Japanese anime. A typical episode runs $100K to $300K USD and is usually around 20 min. The costs increase dramatically with fight scenes. Because you dedcribed what sounded like epic battles and knights I thought $250K was reasonable. My family is Japanese and we also have a moderately successful channel and I looked into the cost a year ago. It surprised us as well. I'm not sure what it would cost in other countries or anime made in Korea. Low end anime may be cheaper. We investigated a quality on par with Naruto (commercial quality).

The Reconquista in Spain, for instance. A few years ago there were plans for an independent movie about the Council of Nicaea and its surrounding events, which would have served as an antidote to the historical fallacies of The Da Vinci Code. There was even a trailer for it, which is still available on KZbin. I donated $50 of my own to the project. Unfortunately it appears to have been abandoned. The Church recognizes saints. It does not make saints. Those who without a doubt died in a state of grace and are most definitely in heaven are those that are recognized as saints. The reason he isn't is because one of the things used as evidence is miracles that are in relation to him after his life. If a few people claimed a miracle that has something to do with him and the miracles are deemed credible by the Church then they may see fit to look into the possibility of him being a saint and the possibility of recognizing him as such. There are far more saints than are confirmed to be saints because to confirm takes investigations, research, miracles, and loads of information especially regarding a person's death.
@kingbaldwiniv54096 жыл бұрын
Nobody disagreed with that. There has to be instigation however to investigate the matter. The Church is not an institution of unlimited resources. In addition, some people are allergic to what could be seen as an impolitic time to recognize the sainthood of a devoted enemy of the Saracens. This could be particularly impolitic considering Pope Francis' public statements as to the disposition of Islam. Pope Pius XII merits serious consideration, but we do not know the disposition of the process for him either, at least I do not know. As he was an enemy of a number of worldly evils, such a recognition could act as a beacon of strength to the faithful, provided that it was a licit recognition.

John Hayward Depends on the director, studio, style and script. Theoretically it could work, if they stick to source material and put effort in historical accuracy. But medieval European warrior? If anything a work of fiction about the crusades should not be used to glorify one side while demonizing the other (this goes for both sides). The muslims could be brutal or reasonable, same goes for the crusaders; overall the medieval world was a much harsher and more violent environment then the world we live in. Is it to much to ask for a little nuance?

The third Crusade would be a good one as the Lion Heart is such a hero type character, but the first crusade will always be the most glorious and interesting. I like the anime idea as its far more achievable in my opinion compared to a live-action film which is near pointless unless you have a Hollywood budget. I would look into getting a script/business plan and take it to Funimation when like you said you have given the channel more time to grow and have a better grasp on the idea/story its self. PS you could start the film series in Sicily with the two Norman brothers Roger and Robert they would be great main characters and you could have the films follow their journey all the way to Jerusalem. although that would be more like 4 movies...... :) Please watch the anime movies for the "Berserk" series that is the type of animation level you would need for this to work! Goodluck.

Aim for a Netflix style series instead of a movie because it will be hard to cover so much in the span of a three hour film.

Why not just a true story of Richard the Lionheart?

A way to make the movie would be... to lead a real one! and record it.

Omg please make a crusade movie
@antoinelambert9386 жыл бұрын
With all the content of even a single crusade, the ideal would be a series on the first one starting with an episode long prologue ending with the pope playing the pope delivering His speach then one season a year until the lotr long movie on the liberation of Jérusalem by Godefroy de Bouillon with the grand ending of his élection. Also, more than just crowdfunding do as for Gettysburg and get the historic Community to help. PS ratter than weird deviant japanise animation go with DC animation quality.

this would be so good! Kingdom of heaven is the best crusader film atm imo. But indeed it shows the crusaders as the bad guys and especially the templars! They show them as mindless fanatics who only want muslim blood. the idea of doing it animated is really good!

I love your idea. For too long the crusades have been falsely framed as an unprovoked genocide of Islam. They invaded Spain first they already had plenty of Christain blood on their hands
