Thank you for this video! The Poet's Wife and Princess Alexandra of Kent are very beautiful. Gertrude Jeckyl and Crown Princess Margareta look amazing against pillars and of course the Lady of Shalott took my breath away on this video. I'm sure it would reduce me to tears should I ever have the privilege of bearing witness to it climbing like that in real life. Except for a couple locations, the majority of Canadians can only dream of growing roses in such manner. 🇨🇦

I reckon the form on the Generous Garden is so gorgeous. Some roses don’t have scents, as you know, but they have beautiful foliage and the flowers with its fragrance is such an extra added bonus. Thanks for the tour, I love that you are not pretending to know everything, it’s refreshing.

Oh thank you for taking us to Austin Gardens...❤❤ that's sad that you can't smell Desdemona, i have her and she smells very strong, even with rain, which effects some Varietys in Fragrance....i noticed a difference in colour, our Summers here are much hotter and the Sunshine more intense, most of my Austins fade in Summer very quickly, Gentle Hermione is almost white here and has intense Myrrh fragrance... and Jubilee Celebretion is just a delight ..Queen of Denmark is a very old Rose, i think she Flowers only once...Caroline Knight is a yellow Sport of Summer song which i Love very much for this incredible orange colour and the outstanding Fragrance, i don't know the Poets Wife but from the Fragrance Graham Thomas is outstanding.... .Lovely Reviews Thanks 🙋🏼‍♀️

...... 6:32 yes, my Poet's wife is in her 3rd year now, endured the terrible ohio winter VERY well. The fragrance is 70% old rose, 30% grapefruit and the flower form is flawless, some blossoms are quartered, then disorganize upon maturity. A blessing to have such a clear, luminous, CADMIUM yellow, not mustard yellow rose. Gertrude Jekyll and Vita Sackville West's hearts would be beating fast to discover such a rose for their garden's. They lived in a simpler, more romantic era, we live in a more abundant era. And to be able to send your images all over the planet in a few seconds is truly a blessing, thank you for sharing. Now we need phones/computers that emanate fragrance! LOL!

With an ongoing pungent septic tank replacement next door we decided last night to see if we could get booked in to visit the David Austin Gardens in Albrighton today (Wednesday 8th June), about a 120 mile round trip. I was very surprised to find quite a few 3-hour slots available for today. It's nice to know that it can be a more spontaneous thing and that you don't have to plan weeks ahead - or maybe it's just a midweek lull? The visit was very useful because I particularly wanted to be able to see the roses in bloom (to see their size, colour and shape, and how the flowers fade and age) and see what their fragrances were like. The weather was nearly perfect, warm enough but not so hot that you got exhausted by the heat. My wife actually took quite an interest (which was unexpected and very gratifying - have I converted her?) and expressed some enthusiasm for buying this or that rose, and we both enjoyed sitting in one area of the garden admiring the hundreds of roses in beds and listening to the birdsong. There are at least 3 peacocks who made their presence heard (not so much bird "song" as screaming) and one was unconcernedly walking around people's feet as they walked along the paths - you had to take care not to tread on his sweeping trail of feathers. I was pleased that my sense of smell seemed to be working as well as it can these days, and I was able to appreciate the scents of many of the roses. My wife was keen to get a spreading ground-cover rose called "Centre Stage" and she fancied a fragrant yellow rose, so we got "The Poet's Wife" which you featured and recommended in your video, and we both agreed on the fragrant white "Susan Williams Ellis". I was a little disappointed that despite all the varieties on offer none struck me as must-buys, and quite a few were quite disappointing in real life compared with their catalogue images, although a few surprised me as being possible buys. I think I have already bought the ones I really, really want (and some I could maybe do without). Also we were both struck with how one type of rose looked good in one context, but not in another - was it the time of day, the stage of blooming, the light, the weather, our level of tiredness? Even one of my favourites, The Ancient Mariner, failed to impress when compared with my example at home - is it because I was comparing a young rose with my more established rose? I made a point of looking at the Carolyn Knight that grabbed your fancy. I'm sorry to tell you that neither of us was impressed - the colour seemed to have washed out to pale yellow since you saw it and I think some recent rain had caused balling of its many petals, leaving it looking rather bedraggled - although the scent was delicious. I think your point about the timing of your visit is valid - some of the roses you showed were less impressive just a few days later, and probably vice-versa. I don't think one visit is enough to get the full picture of how each variety performs over time - and in different weather conditions - but, unless you live close by, repeated visits are easier said than done. And you are unlikely to see a fully mature version of most of the roses in any case. I realised halfway through the visit that I should have been better organised and taken detailed notes while I was in front of the roses I liked, since I did lose track of my favourites and the reasons I liked them, because of the sheer quantity of roses you are looking at. I think there are about a dozen DA roses in total which would for me be worthy of a place in my garden - if I can find space in my garden! I was looking for a red rose and we both thought that Gabriel Oak, which we have, although not a proper red, is a good choice, with Thomas a Becket a good second, and the Old Rose "Rose de Rescht" has a beautiful fragrance. But some of the exotically named like Tuscany Superb and Ispahan turned out to be less impressive than their names suggested. The greenery around the unopened buds of the Chapeau de Napoleon was very intriguing and eye-catching. I also realised what a good job you had done with the filming of the roses - well done! Overall, a brilliant day out. And I got some more roses!

My word I can’t believe I haven’t replied to this already?!?!! ! I’m sorry I guess I missed it. A fascinating read as always nik and I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said. A shame that Carolyn knight was not up to scratch when you visited but I guess these things happen. The day I was there it was magnificent but I’m not surprised to read days later it was a little beaten by the elements. Yes I had big plans for this day that kinda went a little down hill and I’m sad I didn’t record things much better. But I think repeated visits is the way forward if possible and practical. The roses can be so different just days apart. I’m glad you liked the poets wife for me it was splendid and I have since purchased one that I’m very happy with. Was it my imagination or the roses I mentioned had a generous scattering around the Garden? Weeks later I start to doubt myself. Well hope you and your wife are well and thanks for the read.

@@Jay_Jay Yes, I am just looking at the Garden Plan and DA obviously plant their most striking roses in a number of beds - Emily Bronte in 13 different beds, Gabriel Oak in 12 beds, but Claire Austin and Benjamin Britten each only featured in one bed (Gertrude was only in 4, but in huge numbers). Not surprising I suppose. Of course, we may have different opinions from those of DA gardeners as to what constitutes the best roses.

@@nikkonch yes the garden plan I didn’t get or think of that:) Gertrude I think I said in the video it was always in areas of high foot traffic either side of both entrances and I noticed it on 2 junctions both sides going through the gardens. Gentle Hermione was another rose I was looking for but only saw the one rose. I made an off the cuff remark about rose Elizabeth earlier that day in another video saying her scent was moody and I think now it’s a perfect description especially for that rose. There’s no telling how she will perform fragrance wise on any particular day and just when your convinced the fragrance will be underwhelming she hits you with a very fine tune indeed. A rose that likes to tease but I suspect one that will not feature so heavily at DA. Thanks nik

The Poet's wife is a stunner! It looks upright and full of golden yellow blooms. Mine here in southeastern US is still a baby and it's graceful, but still a floppy one. I want my roses to look like this so bad! About fragrance though...I think there are definitely a lot of factors that play into fragrance, and the weather is definitely one of them. James Galway and Munstead Wood are good examples for me. I've grown Munstead Wood for years and only just discovered this year it's fragrance. The strongest fragrance came from blooms on a new and thick cane. It was in the middle of the morning around 9:30am. Later in the day it wasn't as strong, but it was still present. When it's super hot, you barely smell anything at all. James Galway is another one that caught me off guard. I thought this one had no fragrance at all, but strangely, it was in the hottest part of the day when it was fragrant. It was actually strong enough to smell from a distance on one bloom. But in the morning, I didn't smell a thing.

Hi Derek. Yes the poets wife did look exceptional here. I did buy one as a result of this visit it’s sat in my garden now but it’s currently very droopy. Wether or not it will stiffen up in time I don’t know. Fragrance yes many factors come into play. I think this year we had low overnight temps throughout June. Like single digit overnight temps. This killed the daytime fragrance in many roses I believe. I’m told colder overnight Temps roses can turn off there fragrance tap as it’s not best temps for insects to pollinate so they hold back. Also I’ve found some roses are not fragrant until you cut them and bring them indoors. Add to this the time of day, heat, stage of flowering, rain, it can get very complex. @@Jay_Jay Hey! I was looking for footage of The Poet's Wife and came back to your video! I think your footage is the best I've seen of this rose. Mine sadly still doesn't look like the ones you shot. It's an own root I've had for a few years now. It's very fragrant and has bloomed a lot, but like you said, it's very droopy and floppy and I haven't gotten any very large blooms from it either. I think it's because it's own root. I'm considering ordering a grafted one from DA for next season to see what it does. How has yours done for you this year? I'm also curious what you thought of Gabriel Oak's fragrance. It's a sweet fragrance that reminds me of hyacinth. It's something I like from a distance, but up close it's not that pleasant.

Wonderful tour! Loved the commentary about the mystery of fragrance!! I believe I read somewhere that it is a technique of David Austin to plant roses 18" apart in a group of three.The roses grow into each other and create a full bush appearance.

Cheers for the tour! Scent is so finnicky and it seems especially so with Austens. The most consistently fragrant DAs I have are Wollerton Old Hall and Gertrude Jekyll; Mary Rose comes close. Desdemona and the Generous Gardener easily shift from redolent to scentless and Tess of the d’Urberville is almost in the same category. Then my two Malvern Hills are mild at best, but their perfume wafts on the wind on occasion, which is rare for most roses. Tottering-by-Gently and James L. Austin never exuded a whiff of anything for me, though I’ve been contradicted when it came to both, and I would’ve said the Albrighton Rambler’s almost odourless until I brought some cut flowers in the house last year and they filled the air around them with the most perfect musky aroma for a couple of days. Sun exposure, precipitation, time of day, the age of the plant and of the specific bloom definitely affect the scent and, on many occasions, the same factor affects roses differently. Then soil and, by extension, fertilizer perhaps more so? Plus the origin of the scent, whether it wafts from the petals or the stamens. I agree with you that the lack of reliability is disappointing. The one thing I seem to be able to count on is that the first few blooms coming in the middle of May will be quite fragrant in the case of most roses, DA or otherwise; perhaps that's to be chalked up to heat.

Excellent thank you. Yes this is something I wasn’t aware of. Last year my fragrant roses I never noticed any depreciation of fragrance but this year up until a couple of days ago things went down hill for many of my roses fragrance wise and I believe this is the result of lower overnight temps. This effected some roses in my garden and many roses at my trip to da. But I’m in the process of putting together another video I will touch on this again. Thanks for your comment.

Many thanks indeed for your walk n commentary of DA garden. I too I can't smell Desdemona at a friend's place yet she says it smells nice. So I think it's to do our own particular sense of smell. For me my most favourite smell if old rose like in Gertrude. Or a strawberry fruity or citrus. Some tea scents does nothing to me. I also agree with u that weather conditions do affect rose scents. I have noticed that in my garden. I don't know many among the roses u did commentary on but do love Gertrude, PAOK, Emily Bronte n Gabriel Oak.

The shrub roses and the long garden climbers and rambler will be at full display. I suppose I could research on rose fragrance and factors which may influence it. I also have Emily Bronte and it is a twin of Eustacia Vye in terms of fragrance and bloom shape. Cheers 😊

Thanks for the informative video. Almost as good as being there yourself. There's an extremely interesting detailed article about rose fragrance online - I did a search for "best weather for rose scent" and ended up on a page giving Karen's garden tips, where she talks about all sorts of factors affecting fragrance - colour, petal numbers and thickness, etc. I think that as we age we lose quite a bit of our ability to smell, and some people are anyway better "smellers". My wife is much more sensitive than me and often assures me that the rose I cannot smell does in fact have a fragrance. I tend to only really appreciate strong old rose/ fruity smells. However we react differently as well - she finds the scent of Lady Of Shalott unpleasant for example. I was looking at my impressive 5 foot tall Ancient Mariner with its 200 (!) blooms/buds today but the damp cool weather didn't let me get a good whiff - but since it is a myrrh fragrance I won't fully appreciate it anyway. However its strong upright growth and health together with the large, attractive flowers and its overall "neat" appearance ( a feature commented on by a visitor today when comparing it with my Eustacia Vyes) are inclining me to want to plant more (maybe a group of three!), whatever the fragrance. Although since they are so impressive on their own, perhaps it is not really worthwhile planting them as a group. I do really like the fragrances of Desdemona, Emily Bronte and of course Gertrude Jekyll (and Abraham Darby which is now difficult to get hold of because of health issues in the UK).

Lovely Reply as always nik. Yes I read up about this when I got back from DA. I read several articles online but chose to mention DA’s own one from Their website. I don’t think the loss of fragrance is just because I’m now an old git!:) 😃😃 but I do believe atmospherics, temperature, light and overall weather can also play a significant part in diluting fragrance. The problem is most of my learning until now comes from good old KZbin. And a man of your calibre I trust you understand what I tried to allude to in this video 😉. You may see my response to Netty. Tonight I got home from work and we are back in business:) 😃😃. For how long I don’t know. Perhaps it was the low overnight temps we have been seeing lately I really don’t know. But tonight I got great fragrance. Let’s hope it continues. :)

She talks about all that. It’s a video u might want to have on while you’re in the car driving . It’s long but interesting. I’m loving all my roses and yes some days stronger than others . I don’t have the poets wife . The woman in the video talks about the roses getting more beautiful and larger with time. Paul Zimmerman said something extremely striking . Was something like”my hands weren’t this big when I was a baby” Everything takes time and patience and I’m betting my flowers will get better with time. I’m in the mindset that if they look good now it only gets better. Good luck with your purchase. Did u see any golden celebration? That one is my new fav so far I thing it blows me away. Crown princess of margarite yesssss mine if doing amazing in that sunless corner . Can’t wait for next yr.

Thanks Lucy. I will take a look. Yes there was some very close planting that I saw. Very close together. I did see golden celebration yes. A nice rose. It was a little heavy, droopy and the fragrance was ok for me on that day I was there. But a nice rose. The pilgrim and tottering by gently also nice roses but for me anyway the poets wife left the other yellows for dead. Poets wife I saw no bleaching, upright growth, many flowers and a lovely scent.

Everyone is different . Every climate is different. It’s ok to like what you like. I personally like the lighter colors that fade to cream. Something for everyone! I can’t wait to see what you go with. I’m thinking of adding a few more climbers . I’m confused as to what to go with. Definitely want more hight behind my princess A of Kent .

That said I honestly believe Gertrude in particular will always push out a decent intensity. :) But if you can whenever you go to the garden centre have a try for yourself. The picture can and does change IMO. Best of luck ;)

Hi chap, I went there on Thursday, had an amazing visit. My other half wants to go back at the end of June to get the full effect. I love that place, it’s my second visit. I also went there to buy Desdemona and I found her to be stunning with beautiful fragrance. I brought three of her to put in the border and the fragrence is lovely, I find it kind of spicy ??😂. I can’t stop smelling them every time lol pass 😂😂. I am a novice gardener, only been at it 2 years or so and got into it by accident. I agree with you though fragrance varies. If you go back, seriously consider Desdemona it’s a beautiful rose. One other thing, I had a longish conversation with one of the rose guys at David Austin, to try and get as much info as I could whilst I was there and they apparently plant in 3s or 5s, 3 roses per square metre. Excellent mate. Yes I was careful to not come across as saying it wasn’t a fragrant rose, I know it must be fragrant but for me on this day I was only getting tiny fragrance. Not just Desdemona rose but several of the other big name big gun roses I only got light fragrance. Some I got decent fragrance from so I know my nose was working. I am hoping to go again in bear future hopefully in the next couple of weeks. :)

Hi Jay next year I am going to do a video focused on fragrance. I am keeping a note of the weather time or year time of the day to see what I find with my roses. Fragrance really does seem the biggest mystery and so complex and maybe even personal. I went out and had another "sniff" of my gentle Hermione and its there but nowhere near as punchy as in May June time when it knocks your sock off. Funny enough my most fragrant right now is wallerton old hall. The deep cupped shape seems to trap the fragrance like a scent bomb when you smell it up close. QOS very faint my gorgeous shropshire lad also a much lighter fragrance than in earlier months. Rose de reich strong as ever Gertrude has finished so I can't compare at the moments. Vanessa bell is still blooming like crazy and smells of sweets like pear drops and sherbert

Please do Hailey that would be great if you were to do a video, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Many people I’ve heard will talk of what sex you are depends on the fragrance you do or don’t detect, older people lose there sense of smell or time of day effects the fragrance. Different flowers at different stages on the same rose etc. Personally I think there is perhaps some gravity in this. But for me the most sound explanation is the weather. Especially unseasonable weather. This year in June time we had very unseasonal mild overnight temps, even if during the daytime it was perfect and sunny, those cold overnight temps killed the fragrance. I have read that roses do a job of attracting pollinators and if the weather isn’t safe for those pollinators the roses will literally turn off the fragrance tap. A window is required of at least 48 hours of seasonal weather for the roses to release the scent. So the consecutive cold overnight temps obviously disturbed that. That said I do think that some varieties of rose handle this situation better than others. Emily Bronte for one. But I’d love to hear your thoughts because I agree it’s far more complex than I first thought. Perhaps people are getting into the hobby and buying roses with an…. Expectation of this or that, but without an understanding those same people might find disappointment. So highlighting this must be a good thing. Best of luck Hailey ;)

@@Jay_Jay yah...i had an experience with this before.It was with my munstead wood.I planted it i a huge pot and situated it in front of the house southeast part.exposed in tje elements rain/wind for 3 years it was slow and stunted.Then i decided to move it in a less sun but more protected from wind. In that same year it grew twice its height and gave me lots of bloom.I could not believe it. So, i may consider this with desdemona if it will not grow this year.In fairness i only had it last spring bare root. so its only a year old really.but still compared to how PW, jubilee celebration and Boscobel florish they are amazing.🙂🙏

Thanks for the lovely tour. I hope to get there too one day. I'm feeling the same as you on the fragrances especially this year. Desdemona at the front of the house you can normally smell from the pavement but this year so far very little, along with Boscobel and Eustacia Vye. I'm hoping it improves as the season goes on.

Even boscobel In my garden has been very disappointing the past week or so. However, just tonight I got home and you may be pleased to know we are back in business, And I filmed it! Footage is dark and not great so probably won’t upload but I’ll see tomorrow at work. Boscobel is probably the strongest I’ve ever smelt tonight. And tonight I have a new strongest fragrant rose! I’ve no idea what’s going on but keep the faith.

I haven't watched yet, but I have noticed something that doesn't seem to get mentioned,. and that is that the DA roses even the mighty GJ, lose the fragrance after being cut and brought into the house after 24 hours. This I was disappointed to learn, compared to the overwhelming fragrance from a cut peony.

Hi Elian. This was filmed in July last year. I have since bought Carolyn knight and planted in the ground early this year. So taking into account this rose is still an infant I’ve discovered it’s flowers do not do so well in heat and rain. On its day fantastic as you see here, it’s a sport of summer song rose so the same rose just slightly different colour. It’s also grown pretty tall and leggy but remember it’s still an infant in my garden. These are my findings after just one summer, perhaps it will toughen up in future years I hope so because on its day it’s gorgeous. Thanks and good luck

Poets wife is onevof the best...it is the best performer in my garden...first to bloom,proliferous,scent is constant irregardless if weather (Ireland)it seems tolerant to rain.The first year i had P.W she bloomed continously up christmas...i remember my relations spent christmas 2018 in my place and was astounded that P.W is still blooming.Very reliable,so as jubilee celebration and lafy of shalot.

Hi!Roontunes...well, I'm in county Cork.Southwest of the county but not too near the shore.I have strong wind in the southwest part of my garden ang my roses are battered during the bad weather.In this part, i have pots in roses and few planted in the ground.i'm collecting DA's...But i noticed my potted ones do suffer from weather and slow to growm.My P.W is doing so so well because i planted it in my back garden it grew about 4.5 feet and 3 ft wide full of blooms.If you like yellow roses you might consider PW.🙂

When you have to repot a rose you find out how quickly they cram a pot. And it has to be a huge pot to keep a shrub rose healthy. You might get better results with a patio rose or a small floribunda in s pot . Never been to cork, too far to drive for a spot of fishing 🤗. As for the wind, same here, they hate the wind and a rose in a pot will dry out quicker in a pot when it's getting wind blown. The also need reported every other year at least

Yes the weather can make a huge difference. It is said the fragrance of roses attracts the insects to pollinate. If the weather is not right for the insects the roses can turn off the fragrance tap. Some varieties of rose more than others. Here we are having consistently low overnight temps so even if it’s perfectly nice during the day the damage has been done already.

Desdemona in my garden for 3 years and does not smell at all. Others I have planted at work give a lovely scent in the second flush, however i am not happy with mine as it too is very floppy.

Sorry to hear that Manuel. Roses I’m sure will be different for different people in different locations. I have an Olivia rose Austin that it doing twice as well only a few feet apart. Don’t give up I’m sure a decent rose will fit in your garden. I’m lucky to wait 2 years let alone 3. I’d try something else in that spot before it’s too late and the soil gets contaminated by your Desdemona. Best of luck.

I've found these to smell really wonderful (not in order). 1) Ebb tide 2) Princess Charlene de Monaco 3) Memorial Day 4) Blue Girl (she doesn't last in a vase though). 5) Mr. Lincoln 6) Don Juan (super rich Velvet red climbing rose The color/texture really stands out). 7) Pope John Paul 11 (a beautiful white hybrid tea rose that lasts very long in a vase, and in the garden).

I have a little story , 62 years ago a rose breeder fled from the occupyd germany and wasnt gunt down he knew a girl in holland and married her and started with her a rose breeding garden and they planted and sold their roses in ouwer front garden it were single flower roses fire red no smel 70 cm high .and here coms the question and anwser as in that time 5 year old boy i was standing in the first summer they bloom in front of them and the inpact was born for the rest off my live, so are the da roses beautifull they sertainly are but the impact ......red roses single flower ... In my experience, peak Rose time is the last two weeks in June through the first week in July, obviously depending on the weather. As for scent, there are a lot of reasons why scent might change, including the fact that men tend to lose their sense of smell more than women as they get older, but certainly weather is a factor and it’s something I thought was widely understood. Scent is about attracting insects to pollinate so plants have evolved to throw out more scent when there’s likely to be more insects about and less scent when fewer insects will be about such as on rainy/overcast days. As you claimed you couldn’t find any KZbin videos that talk about this (I assume in the context of Roses/DA Roses) I’m surprised you haven’t seen any of my multiple videos filmed at DA Roses which have thousands of views. Hi there soulgirl and a merry Christmas to you too. I was gonna do a Christmas video but for one reason or another…I didn’t. Yes a wonderful visit. I actually went back just a few weeks later and it was much better and more what I was expecting. I actually done some filming whilst there on that second visit for a Christmas special type thing but as I told a few people now, I lost all that footage. I got locked out of my KZbin account in the summer and couldn’t get back in for love nor money! I thought it was lost forever so in an attempt to get back in I wiped and reset my phone. It didn’t get me back in plus I lost all that video footage. Very annoying. Yes Carolyn knight I have now. It was a lovely rose and stand out for me on that day. I only saw a small group of them in one area but fantastic. And Emily I have now also. I will be going back next year similar time. I loved it. Well hopefully I’ll see updates on your channel in the new year I’ll look forward to that. I much prefer Windermere over Desdemona...stronger scent and prettier flower and more of them...but I agree..weather and location can make a huge difference..this year many rosie people on know on Instagram have said Austin's are low on fragrance this year compared to 2021...a rose I would think you like is Summer Romance...I believe Graham Thomas is 1 of its parents..but it doesn't have the blackspot problem that GT has..Cathedral Bells and Queen of Elegance are also nice and 1 I think has English in its background ...🌹🌹🌹🌹

Hi there, yes summer romance is a rose I love. I have 4 of them. All new towards the tail end of last year or bare root this year. Despite there young age I’m over the moon with them. Yes I didn’t notice the lack of fragrance last year but I didn’t have many fragrant roses and the ones I did have last year were in the very fragrant category , Fragrant cloud, Gertrude etc. I haven’t seen any conversation about the weather and fragrance this year, that would have made things less confusing for me. In regards to smell (you may have already thought about this), did you happen to have any allergies or a cold at that time, or did you take antihistamines? Those things can affect my sense of smell. If not, I'm wondering if the fertizer they used had an affect. I used bone meal on my roses for the first time, and noticed the new blooms were intensified. Wonderful video, thank you.

Hi there. I know what it was now why the fragrance wasn’t too good and that’s because the whole month of June we had lower than normal overnight temps. And sadly this killed the daytime fragrance on many of the roses. When things heated up during the night the fragrance arrived. I went back to DA a few weeks later and the scent was there. ;)

Thank you for posting this. A couple of observations if I may. I see DA use woodchip as a mulch or weed suppressant. I am surprised at that, there is so much critical commentary on woodchip and a lot of it negative. Of all the roses I have I so far can only recommend three for positive strong fragrance. Gertrude of course, Isaac perierre, wonderful fruity fragrance and Floriana, a rose I got from Tuin Centrum in holland, even my wife ( my worst critic ) goes 'wow !' Boscobel, nothing LA of Kent, nothing Harlow Carr, nothing Queen of Sweden, nothing Eustacia vye, 3/10 James Galway lightly fragrant 3/10 Bathsheba delicious, unusual but light and seldom CP Margareta, 3/10, fresh and fruity Gardeners Glory, a rock solid golden yellow HT bloom form with vigorous growth and 5/10 fragrance Candy land, nothing Duchess of Cambridge ( Chippendale) fabulous prolific bloomer but no scent so far Susan Williams Ellis gave up delightful citrus fragrance last year (yr 1) but so far this year, nothing That's what's blooming for me at the moment. But it's a lottery, too cool too warm too windy too early too late too acid too alkali wrong mulch 😩😩😩 yes indeed some expert rosarians swear by granite pebbles to boost fragrance 🤗. But they're all gorgeous to see and worth waiting for

People want to hear certain things, even I want to hear certain things! but I’m finding that it’s not always as straight forward as that. Regarding the wood chip mulch this is the first I have heard of this negative aspect, I will look into this. I will also of course cast an eye on your fragrant roses.

Wood chips. Almost everything you can buy is artificially coloured, potentially 'treated'. If the wood chip begins to migrate into the soil then the soil begins to break it down and that can take many many months to the detriment of the plants. When the woodchip become damp and mouldy it harbours all manner of critters that will devour your roses. I'm sure DA will do all the management and husbandry required to keep the woodchip problem under control but Joe Blogs just wants a weed barrier that he can forget about. Me, I'm using leaf litter topped up with lawn clippings around my roses that are in my daffodil bed so I don't kill my bulbs, I pull it away from the canes to keep them clear at the bottom. In my other beds I use broken slates in a fan pattern as a suppressant, looks well, suppresses the weeds and allows the soil to breathe. On another note. Isaac perierre grew long canes last year with adequate blooms. I didn't prune them this year, just pegged them and they are heaving with strongly fragrant blooms. Your obedient 'lovely viewer' 😉

Thanks Jade yes I watched it. The video was sadly bought out a few days after mine. It was explained to me by someone far more educated than myself that in addition to what she says here, part of the reason for fragrance is too attract pollinators. And IF the weather is too dangerous or not suitable for these pollinators at any particular moment in time, or too dangerous for it’s flowers, then the rose literally turns off the fragrance tap. So colder overnight temps fall into that category. And crucially it takes 24 or even 48 hours for the fragrance to come through again. So regardless of weather the following day, the time of day or how many flowers on a rose you smell, no matter what stage of development the flower is in, if that fragrance tap has been turned off it then takes time 24-48 hours for the oils to come through again for our noses. Some varieties fair a little differently than others with a more reliable fragrance. Emily bronte for example and my new purchase this year mum in a million. Throw into the mix our noses our ages it gets pretty complex. But the above message as far as I was aware at the time at least I for one was completely unaware of. I’m just trying to understand what your saying here forgive my stupidity but I’ve read it several times. You use the words doesnt and isn’t and two negatives equals a positive? But I think your saying old english roses are often incorrectly thought of as being David austin roses. Or put another way but equally incorrect, for a rose to be classed as being an English rose, it has to be bred by David Austin ? If so then yes this is an incorrect belief. There are many other English and British rose breeders currently and who were around long before david Austin. The term English rose has been around for centuries. If I referred to queen of Denmark as being a david austin rose in this video I apologise. ;)

@Jay_Jay sorry for the confusion, David Austin sells many roses which he didn't breed but still sells online & at his nursery Eg Iceberg - which is a common rose that can be bought anywhere. It isn't described in his sales catalogue as 'an English shrub rose', just as a 'shrub rose,climbi g rose etc'. The same goes for fragrant cloud, Queen of Denmark, etc etc, on fact any rose not bred by David austin. I have noted through the years that all David Austin roses bred by him have the word 'English' in the discription. If it doesn't, then it wasn't bred by him. I'm really pleased you did the nursery tours. BTW, I found it very helpful.

& Yes, to clarify, if you want to be sure you are buying a David Austin bred rose, make sure it says ' English'
