I visited the Festival of Quilts (the biggest quilt show in the United Kingdom) for the first time this year. It was held at the NEC in Birmingham England.
As well as attending the festival I also entered two quilts into a new category they had this year called 'Sustainable Quilts'.
This video is mostly quilts and you are welcome to play with the video settings to slow it down or pause to read the quilter's names.
Below are the competition category codes that you will see on the labels.
Quilt Competition Category Codes:
ST - Sustainable Quilts
MD - Modern Quilts
TD - Traditional Quilts
TP - Two Person Quilts
CT- Contemporary Quilts
AT - Art Quilts
PT - Pictorial Quilts
MN - Miniature Quilts
QG - Quilter’s Guild Challenge
GP - Group Quilts
JS - Joy of Sharing (a non judged category)
QC - Quilt Creations
NV - Novice Quilters
YQ - Young Quilters
Any quilts with a white label and no code or number were in special exhibits of which there were many.

CONGRATULATIONS on the shortlist! Please don't explain it away. You occasionally reference the amount of time you have been quilting as if it is a negative. I would like to say thank you for a new perspective on quilting. You have inspired and motivated me in many ways. I was thrilled to see your 1st quilt show entries and shortlist acknowledgement. It validates what so many of us have seen in you and commented on. So pleased for you!

It was great to meet you at Festival! Thanks so much for stopping by the stand and featuring us on your video. I hope you have lots of fun with your purchases :-) Congratulations on your first show entry - I'm planning on encouraging others to do the same (including me!) in 2024. I know that others who did so in 2023 really found having the deadline good and bad in equal measure but the pleasure of seeing their quilt hang at Festival far outweighed that deadline!

I love the way you showed the quilts as still shots instead of walking around with a camera and getting us dizzy without seeing clear pictures of the quilts. Congratulations on getting your quilts into a show, I just make them for fun and don't have any plans to place them into a competitive show but I'm thankful you great quilters do so i can see them. Great video! I'll come back to see it all again with reduced speed to see all these beauties. I'd love to spend a vacation there one year (I'm from Germany, so would be a bit more than a 4h train ride). Would be interesting to hear you talk about the submission process. Had 2 of my quilts hung at a tiny show near me (without any rating) and it's really nice to see your quilts in a show. Best part was a little girl saying to her mom: They say you can take photos of the quilts for personal use and I want a photo of THAT quilt, pointing at mine. And I was like "gnihihi, how cuuuute!! ☺"

I enjoy the "randomness" of anything goes, then some of those art quilts are stunning. Wow! Excellent job filming the quilts and the contributors info! Thank you for taking the time to post those together. I just watched your video of the QAYG assembly of the Orange Peel quilt. Very nice. I am curious as to why you opt to QAYG when you have a long arm? I’m new to quilting and long arming (1 1/2 / 1 year). I did my first couple using QAYG, farmed one out but quickly decided I wanted to a long arm to finish my own work. It is definitely a challenge and learning curve is steep.
@ScrapFabricLove

Thanks! I only opted to QAYG that one because of the denim. I haven’t quite mastered denim quilts on the long arm yet - I tend to get a lot of stretch. Probably something about how I am loading them!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the denim and bright scrap quilt!!! Its on the short list for NEXT! Not fond of the overgrown one. Non-straight edge ones don't seem like quilts... not easy to sleep under. That's my definition of good quilt....can you sleep under it like a hug. There should be a category for "WELDED tooooo much stitching". Those are tooo tight.. not a hug.

I really love overgrown, it’s incredible, and I can understand completely why it’s shortlisted. The second one would be Keeper of Broken Books is great with the dragon. A Walk Through the Village of Rowhedge. Must have taken forever. I love appliqué. Are there requirements other than being sustainable materials? Do they have a particular amount to be hand sewed versus machine stitched?
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 7 ай бұрын
No it doesn’t need to be appliqué at all. It’s about the materials used and there is a minimum overall size requirement.

Your art quilt is stunning! Thank you for the generous photography! My eyes were soaking it all in as I kept hitting the pause button on my computer. I would be intereted in knowing how to make the transition from pattern to artistic placement. How did you learn to do that?
@ScrapFabricLove
@ScrapFabricLove 11 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video. Not sure I so much learned how to not use a pattern I just prefer not to use patterns. They confuse me usually 😂. I can use them/write them if I concentrate but for me it is easier to just experiment and put things together and see what happens. If you are looking for a way to use that experimental muscle you already have in you then looking at improv quilt videos or courses would probably be a way to start. You already know what is pleasing to your own eye so it’s just about trusting that gut instinct I think.
