I'm not sure if you knew this, but improv was an essential aspect of composing for almost every major classical composer. Many romantic era composers like Chopin learned to compose largely though a style of improvisation called 'partimento', which is where you're given figured bass and a stylistic framework, and asked to improvise over it while meeting the requested guidelines. Another prominent example is in the baroque era, with Bach. Often, when harpsichordists were tasked with accompanying an ensemble, they would be given a sheet with solely figured bass notation and be asked to improvise. Rarely would there ever be notes consciously written out onto a page for this purpose. Bach was said to be an incredible improviser. Somewhat unrelated, but Mozart too. Nearly every major composer regularly practiced some form of improvisation
