Adding wheel weights to the John Deere 5045E and doing it the way I see as right vs how Deere commonly installs these weights.

Your way Ben. Been mounting them so the cone fits the dish of the wheel for over 60 years. In the field a gap fills with dirt when it is dry, mud when it is wet, and seeds and vegetation in hay. Seems to me the Deere way is for the other side of the wheel.

I’m with you Ben. If you’ve ever removed dried mud behind center of the weight you understand my why! The Deere way you get soaked from water spray cleaning center of weight because the “V” is much deeper. And it’s a trash catcher, everything gets trapped, wet grass, wet leaves and etc.

I mounted my 2 sets of wheel weights the same way that you did. It sucks the weights in tighter to the rim & limits the overall length of the "lever arm" that they weights have on the fasteners. I mounted them by myself too. To support them I cut a 2x6 stub to lay on the wheel and set the weight on it and then used 2 prybars to guide it to the carriage bolt holes. I slipped 1x4 stubs in to get it closer, jammed in 2 carriage bolts and just started the nuts to hold it. Then I used the prybars to dial it in and then used my impact to run the nuts down.
@khtractors
@khtractors Жыл бұрын
With those two studs I was able to lift the weight onto them and it held there while I installed the nuts. Thanks for watching

Hey Ben. I like the way - your way - seems to mate up nice and tight and flush. If it was me, I'd pull the other side and see how a 2nd weight will mate up on the one you set as your way. If it mounts cleanly I'd stick with your option, as a centered weight will make a big difference at street speeds. Thanks for bringing us along.

Your way makes sense, I think the confusion with weights (and this is my opinion) if you mount those weights the "John Deere way" they will not self center per design of the weight. The weight is shaped/dished to self center on the rim and it is reversible to do the same if you mount it to the inside of the rim. They do that so you can add more weight and not stick out too far past the tire if you only did the outside weights. Ideally you could get about 5 weights per tire by adding to both the inside and the outside of the rim and still be almost even with the wide part/sidewall of the tire. Your way All the way!

I believe the weights are designed to be mount depending on how you have the offset for the rear tires configured. If you had the offset of the wheels set to narrow, the cone would be out. If you have the wheels setup for a wide track, the cones point in like you prefer. Not sure that makes sense.

I like your mounting method-looks a little more rugged. Older Deeres had a base weight plate, then you could add additional weights which would center as they tightened. But! those suitcase weights mounted just ahead of the floorboard. Been around tractors all my life and have never seen suitcase weights mounted in the center of a tractor (yep, I have old tractors)… interesting configuration and effective for straight pulling applications I suppose-would save a bit of wear in the front axle mount and wheel bearings.

Having worked at a Deere dealer, I saw them mounted both ways. I think for us it boiled down to the technician that installed them, and maybe the style wheel it went on. As far as looks go, I like your way better. I think it would be easier to do it your way as far as lining everything up. We sold weights from a company call North State. They were a lot less than the Deere weights. I traded for a 5400 Deere a few weeks ago, which is a lot like your 5045E, with a little more horsepower, I may eventually put some wheel weights on it too.

Mine are mounted your way and my dealership put them on that way. The cone facing out seems reversed IMO and yes if you look at John Deere videos they are all cone out. I should add that if the wheels are dished in, like yours are, the cone goes against the wheel. If you flipped your wheels so the center dish is out than the weights are mounted cone out. So the correct way to mount the weights depends on which side of the center dish of the wheel you are mounting the weights to.

I'm going with your way, the weights are cone shaped to fit the center disc, how God intended. You can stack em up on the inside too. Weight on a tractor makes a world of difference. When I had my 2wd J.D. 5101EN, I had two weights per side and the 16.9-24s as full as allowed with beet juice (rim guard). I could then pull my 500 gallon orchard sprayer up the steep hills on my farm with minimal slipping, just kinda wrinkled the sod, didn't actually spin. Got told I was crazy for loading the tires by the guy that loaded them, he said "you already have wheel weights, that's gunna be really heavy!" My reply was, "Exactly! I can lift two of those weights at once by hand, but I cant lift that tire once it's filled! No comparison.".

Ben, I agree that I would mount weights the way you do. Having them centered is important especially when you’re roading your tractor like you do. On another note, what are the dimensions of your shop? I’m in the planning stages of a new shop and am trying to see what other guys have that works for them.

Thanks Ben. I’m thinking of a 26’x40’ so it’s good to know what you have is serving your needs. Love the channel! Enjoy your content and your giving ways. Keep it up.

Both ways look good I like your way better my massey ferguson 4707 's bolts to the wheel studs it's got longer wheel studs on it

I like the 4707. The only draw back I saw to them is the turning radius. That’s definitely a tractor on my radar if I ever buy something to replace my M6060. Thanks for watching

Your way seems better to Versace John Deere to the way John Deere are around the center it looks like dirt would collect inside the wheel wait to I guess maybe some of these engineers thinks it might be better who knows but your way to sounds like your way fits better .
