A Leica's magic is that it gives you the essentials and makes the photographer do the rest, which makes you hyper aware about exposure, focus and composition. Most of the features of today's "cameras" create separation between the photographer and the act of making an image.

Hi Paul. It has been some years since you’ve put up your KZbin Vlogs . I keep coming back to them for the inherent quality of the content. The scenes, the camera, the aesthetics, the mood, the advice and guidance, viewpoints and most importantly , the quality of the final images. Amazing stuff. And I keep coming back, time and time again till today . Thanks again. Take care and god bless. Izzy

Hi there! I watched the vlog again… once more … you are one of the reasons I bought a M8;-) I got me one last week, refurbished and modified by Leica from M8 to M8.2. I don’t know what it is, but this camera is already a “always in the bag”. So much joy to use. I bought her as a b/w camera in addition to my M240 and Nikon D3&Z7, as I like to use different cameras when using 35mm film , (with the Hasselblad you get different backs but still) … kind of weird maybe but it’s just me … always good light!👍🏼

'MAKES ME FEEL SPECIAL WHEN I AM TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS' So true, You know it just works and you know it will take those beautiful images provided you did your part, that is composition and focusing etc. which naturally you will do and be so hyped about doing, leica makes that come out from you, thats the Leica philosophy - to bring the photographer in you, makes you connect with your subject more by being the mediator and not a distraction.

Since I’ve followed you, Paul, you’ve got a thousand new followers already. In my humble opinion it is a delicate thing to ask your audience about what they want to see. It has two sides perhaps. You have produced content the way you felt it has been right, the way it has hopefully and seemingly been personal to you, and I really do believe that the best thing you can do is to stay true to yourself and keep doing what you love, regardless of what we think. My guess is that us who have followed you have loved your content due to you leading the way, for your honesty, passion and thoughts. However, the moment you realize you are producing content for an audience that has got expectations, while you might want to evolve and move on to a different direction, it might in the long term make you less content with what you are doing. So, really, you have been sharing what has made you inspired on a personal level, and I think that’s usually what creates the best quality results. The audience will (or at least should) follow. Don’t produce for us, even if part of you does it for us :). Just stay who you are, this is your life! I and all the rest of us probably are just grateful for your concern and your asking about our opinion. Hope you understand me the right way. Excellent work so far, and I for one will look forward to more of your creations. Thanks for everything!

Csaba you have just turned the light on for me, you are so right! I have been offering the same advice to others and ignoring it myself. Just a few days ago I told someone to shoot what you feel is right and if you like it others will also. Thankyou so much you nailed it!

Paul C Smith Photographer Music is a good example. I’ve always listened to music that you don’t hear on the radio. Some of those musicians over the years may have started producing for the masses, resulting in a deep-dive in the soul of their music. Therefore I, for one, stopped listening to music from those artists. You will always have an audience even if you change directions. What I don’t know so much about is the KZbin perspective and if there is any pressure with getting new subscribers. Either way, you have got to have pleasure in making content, and you can be sure that there will be at least one more person in the world that likes it :).

I totally agree with what you said about being in a special zone and magical place with certain cameras, and the effect that can have on your photography. So true. I feel exactly the same about my Plaubel Makina 670 which I was lucky enough to buy a couple of months ago. Every time I use it I swear there is magic in the air and I feel my photos have something special - at least to me :-) Thanks for being open and honest about your Leicas. Sure, better gear doesn't automatically make you a better photographer, but if it makes you feel like you can be, and if it helps fuel your enthusiasm for something you enjoy passionately, then who's to say your pictures aren't better as a result. Great post. Keep it up :-)

The gear may help you feel good about taking images but you also need to have an eye for great composition and one that tells a storey and sucks the viewer in and you certainly have the talent Paul, great stuff. I have been a photographer for over 40 years and only now am I looking at a Leica for the simplistic controls and the engagement that it seems to provide. The challenge will be letting go of all the features a modern day camera brings for just the exposure triangle, but I am looking fwd to it. All the best from the UK.

Okay, this is over a year old, but my feedback, probably to any photographer, is just keep taking what you like, and vlogging what is appropriate to you. As soon as you start second guessing the audience your creativity stutters. You do have a great connection with your environment and that's what shines through most for me.

I've watched all of your previous episodes since discovering your channel. I like that your channel is personalized. Many so called photography channels are either about gear or lessons in basic photography which I don't need. Even your gear talk in this episode was personalized so it was worth watching rather than many other leica episodes i've seen in which the host drools over the leica without really expressing anything interesting. I appreciate the relaxed personalized content. I like the pictures. I like seeing what is in your immediate area there in NZ rather than the better known touristy areas. Watching your channel has not only encouraged me to move NZ up on my places to visit list it has also got me thinking about what kind of channel I can start. I also like that you tell us the names of places you go so I can look them up on a map. Keep up the great work and do *your* show. Don't let the peanut gallery influence your content too much.

I totally agree about embracing your equipment if it hits a note for you. I like shooting with my Leica (M10-d). I have shot with all kinds of equipment going back to my youth in the 70’s. It’s not about the equipment and I am not a gear head at least not in what I find interesting about photography. I am a gear head in terms of what gets me motivated to go out and shoot and helps me enjoy the process. There is something really cool about shooting with a Leica. It’s expensive and feels like a special piece of hardware. It’s legacy also gets me in the right frame of mind but I would never go down the rat hole of trying to sell anybody on the idea that it’s a better camera then camera x.

Hey Paul - great to see your subscribers growing. I think you have started small and slow, but because of your unique, personal, high quality content, you should do very well. You remind me of another youtuber Sean Tucker. Also, most people post from Europe or American. Your NZ based content is very unique and different - we have that lovely clean, organic squeaky clean image in NZ, and it is very sought after by the rest of the world. Though I have lived in Aus now for over 30yrs, I still always travel on my NZ passport and still get a lot of very positive comments. I'm too embarrassed to travel on my Aussie passport! Keep up the great work Paul - I want to see you do well. Philip

Just saw this one now but four years later. I try to shoot Nikon FX and DX and Lumix MF3. There second nature and keep me in the zone. I wouldn't dare go back to film because I don't have the patience to go through the whole process You managed to combine both mediums in to an art 📷👍

Very interesting viewing Paul, I was hooked on your obvious passion of the art throughout this vlog. Your use of silhouettes, creating contrast is excellent. I’m not what I’d liked to see to be honest, just continue with different locations I suppose. Do you ever venture up to the mountains? It would be interesting to see what you manage to capture. 👍

I find it interesting the juxtaposition of the Leica and Olympus cameras in this video. I owned 2 OM-1s and OM-10 back in the day (1980s) and found them unmatched for their handling and optical quality. And there is the story that the Olympus designer was inspired by the Leica rangefinders and the OM bodies were very close in size as ideal combination of compactness and ergonomics. In fact Olympus initially named the their OM-1 as the M-1 (for Maitini the designer) but at the first photography trade show showing the new camera the Leica sales reps went over and said "M" series was their trademark - so Olympus changed their camera to "OM" to dodge the possible litigation. So a couple of points of commonality between the two brands. Enjoying the "Kiwi" quality of your work and the focus on landscape and people that for me transcends the great divide offilm versus digital. I have subscribed and looking forward to more of your work and insights!
