Dave, you have described your white balance, exposure and focus procedure to some extent in other videos, but this is the most complete treatment, including checking the results after exposure before considering the shot done and moving on. Having come of age in the early 1960s camping, hiking, and climbing in the Washington Cascades it’s a treat to see such a familiar landscape through your lens.

@@DaveMorrow Dave, it was definitely not as crowded or bureaucratic. No trailhead parking permits or campsite reservations. The Smith Tower was still the Seattle skyline icon (until the Space Needle was completed). Starbucks was a single shop at Pike Place Market, REI was a small shop on the second floor at 1313 Pike St, down the hall from the Seattle Mountaineer’s club room, and smelled of hemp, wool, and leather, not nylon and polypropylene. Jim Whittaker had not yet summited Everest and become a celebrity, he was my ski instructor at the Mountaineers Snoqualmie Lodge and occasionally climb leader (we laughed our way up mountains with Jim). Larry Penburthy had just started MSR. Out of the trunk of his car at the trailhead he handed out various prototypes to test. We climbed Mt Rainer peeing on litmus paper and recording our urine pH. Larry had a theory about altitude sickness and electrolyte balance. While most of the party remained camped in snow caves at 12,000 ft three of us went to the summit and spent a night bivouacked in an ice cave inside the crater rim. Not the most comfortable night, but great view from the front porch the next morning. I still have my original issue MSR ice axe with its unceremonious international orange spray paint finish. I still have the imported wood-shafted ice ax it replaced too, much more stylish.

Dave - this video brings me back to that 20 minutes you spent with our group at the Hoh Forest last August. At that time you changed my whole workflow and ultimately saved me many unnecessary images just by using live view to view and adjust ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed, Exposure Compensation, Histogram and focus. The WB section of this video adds even more functionality! The video series is excellent - the best, actually!

Dave - I'm a huge fan of your photography technique videos. They're unlike any others in that you meticulously go thru each step of your process. So many other videos I see on-line focus on particular camera settings which is of little use to me. I appreciate that you explain the 'why' and 'what' you're doing with your photography process. Keep up the great work Dave.

Dave, I truly enjoy that you include on the video not just the tips and tricks, but also the importance of story behind and how to hard it is to get to those places. A lot of times, those "adventures" are being taken for granted and people just think something like "ohh wow, nice picture, you got it right on time" without given much thought of how hard it is to get to those places.

Great Video. Man, this is the best explanation on how to use and adjust the histogram and shooting to the right using exp comp. The penny finally drops. Its all about "data capture". I've been bracketing for years then using lightroom's HDR feature to build a larger more data rich image.
@DaveMorrow
@DaveMorrow 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks James. There is nothing wrong with bracketing, but with newer cameras / sensors, it's often overlapping data. 90% of the time a single correctly exposed images captures it all. But there are those times when multiple exposures are required. It's all about knowing when you need it:) DATA COLLECTION! Collecting light energy, turning it into electric signal, and playing with it on your computer. Sounds fun to me! I'll have a new video out on Tuesday, which covers some basics of bracketing techniques.

In dimly lit scenes to focus easier you can open your aperture all the way to let more light in. Focus on the points that you want and then redo the aperture that you’re choosing for the shot.

Thanks Dave! I can't wait to use the tips and techniques in this video. I'm still struggling with Aperture Priority mode - I always shoot Manual. I think my problem is with the amount of available light...definitely need more practice. If you're looking for future topics, I'd be interested in how you go about scouting for a location. I want to get better at getting of the beaten path, and find my own unique spots...something not seen in a thousand other photographs. I use TPE, Sun Surveyor, and Google Earth all the time, but I'm sure there are some tips you could provide. Some nugget of wisdom using these tools (or others) that you've found helpful. Thanks again!

Hi Ryan. Give this article a read. it will help you to understand manual vs ap: www.davemorrowphotography.com/exposure-triangle The best way to get off the beaten path, is to load your backpack with a week of food and start hiking. You're guaranteed to find good stuff, planning or not. I use www.caltopo.com & google earth to plan all my trips, for route only, sometimes on trail, sometimes off. When you get a day or two into the wilderness, the photos come on their own. No need to plan them:) That's about all I use anymore. I'll add this topic to my list of future videos:)

"Test: Take 2 pictures (A) & (B). A wrong WB and B right WB. Open the two RAW. Correct the white balance of A. Is it ok? Does it match B? It will. The RAW file has all the information of the sensor. WITHOUT any process. This is true. Even if it sounds extreme. :) "The NEF format supports 12-bit or 14-bit data, depending on the camera used to capture the image. Any adjustments to image settings such as exposure, hue, tone, sharpening, and white balance can be made with software once the image is saved to a computer. These changes to the image are stored as instruction sets separate from the raw image data in the NEF file, which means that no matter how many edits are applied to the image you can revert back to the original."

Great and helpful video. I had a question/issue about getting the white balance correct after taking some mountain landscape pictures in West Texas and there was also haze present. I'll try this technique of using Live View and adjusting the white balance using the kelvin scale and match the screen view to what I see. When I got back home and processed the pictures I had taken I wasn't quite sure what the scene and white balance looked like exactly (as several days had passed) so this should help. Also, I always use Manual Mode but will try Aperture Priority.

Pls help me out here. RAW does not have a Wht balance or color space. It is a subjective (wht balance) editing choice. Too using K in the field is like using Exposdisk to set neutral Wht balance or custom where the luminosity histogram is centered. However each time the light changes (changes rapidly at sunset/sunrise) so does the wht balance. So using K you will need to constantly change the K temp to reflect the Wht balance. If I am wrong or my thought process is wrong, pls LMK...Excellent video and a lot of food for thought too. Really enjoy it.

If you're interested in going into the backcountry I'd be happy to discuss a 1-1 tour, which features what I consider to be "real" landscape photography:) Just shoot me an email, dave@davemorrowphotography.com

Hi Dave. Its nearly 40 degrees here in Adelaide South Australia today so watching you hiking in the snow is rather cool!! I'm really enjoying your videos re histograms. Quick question. I have a Nikon D800 and find it difficult in the Australian light to actually see the image on the rear screen in live view without a black hood or similar shading. Does adjusting the screen brightness throw out the balance of the light values seen on screen in contrast to looking directly at the scene? Cheers, Paul.
@DaveMorrow
@DaveMorrow 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul. It will have a slight effect. So long as white balance is close, no problem though. That's why histograms are key to utilize, they don't care about screen glare.

Awesome content mate been watching a heap of your videos recently good to see a landscape tog with solid experience getting down to the techniques. One question about focus that you have touched on briefly in a few vids. Do you sometimes focus then stop down your aperture as i find i'm focusing noise sometimes at sunrise/sunset and focusing then stopping down the aperture helps, TIA for any help

Thanks Kyle. Yessir. For sure. Usually the min f-stop possible to focus, 2.8 to 3.5 ish, then adjust to f/8 or f/11 for the shot.

Many thanks, very interesting and rewarding tutorial! Two questions:1) Is it right, that following your workflow raw image stays as it would be without following your workflow, solely jpeg image will be changed. So one is able to see what is he doing, using the jpeg-histogram as help to expose correctly etc.?2) What did you wear? I am looking for proper clothing for exactly the same situation: Walk to the spot and stay there for maybe an hour or two without moving much.Thank you in advance! Regards, Robert
@DaveMorrow
@DaveMorrow 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, Thanks. 1) Not really. Your color effects exposure, although you can adjust raw color, the right color is needed for the correct exposure. 2) Depends what kind of gear you need. Most of my trips are 3-7 nights out, living out of a backpack. So if you just want to do a day hike, you probably won't need the really $$$ gear and can save some money. Here is a guide that I wrote on the topic: www.davemorrowphotography.com/Backpacking-for-Photographers-Guide , reference the Layering Section.

Hi Dave. Many thanks for this. As usual your tutorials take us to places other photo tutorials don't (geographically & technically!). Especially the importance of getting a neutral WB setting even in raw. On that point, what about the camera jpeg picture setting? Does that influence what you see on the screen re the image & histogram? I've read different opinions on this.

@@DaveMorrow I didn't explain that well. I meant for raw shooting. I wondered if the jpeg picture setting can influence the histogram that you see on the screen..hence influence the exposure for raw.

HI Dave, Amazing video. i have a question, what if i will need to add a 10stop ND filter, am i still can apply the same techniques you use such as ETTR and just reduce the shutter speed 10 stops as per the ND filter or you suggest a different technique?

My question/statement first off is that the camera's histogram is built on a .jpg for the captured image. However when in LV, is that luminosity histogram a reflection of RAW file format?
@DaveMorrow
@DaveMorrow 6 жыл бұрын
Really good question! The camera's RGB histogram reads a jpg rendering of the RAW file and displays it in image review. The live view histogram is still an RGB histogram. It just doesn't show individual color channels such as image review. It is an 8-bit histogram just like the image review version. More details on bit-depth & color here--> www.davemorrowphotography.com/camera-sensor-size-guide#Bit_Depth_Color_Depth_ImageQuality Once you load a picture into Lightroom or Adobe Camera RAW you'll notice that it doesn't match the one of the back of the camera perfectly. RAW editing programs read and render the raw file histogram. You're camera histogram will show the image clipping in the darks and shadows before they actually do. This is a nice failsafe:) I'd recommend some test shots, compare back of camera to what comes out in raw editing programs when exposed to the right.

Great tips Dave the best that I have found. I find a lot of photographers like to "black box" their techniques. I have one question. How do you keep your batteries charged on a backpacking trip?
@DaveMorrow

Thanks Harlan. Looks like some serious exposure in that profile pic? Where were you climbing? I take a battery per day of the trip, with 3 extras just in case. More details on backpacking photography setup here--> www.davemorrowphotography.com/Backpacking-for-Photographers-Guide

Fred Beckey was one of the greatest climbers ever, I have a climbing friend who climbed with him, Simon told many stories of Fred, and the steely resolve of his spirit, and his enthusiasm to go climbing. I just read a book by Jack Kerouac he spent a summer working a at a lookout in that range, it's sounds like it's a must see visit area.

Yes. Plus, the best mentality. Take shit from no one, follow your goals at all costs. I bet he has some good stories. I heard Fred was not always fun to climb with. His movie, Dirtbag, is now showing in Seattle. Headed down to see it tomorrow night. That's a great book, about desolation peak. Really fun hike, with a great view of both sides of the North Cascade Range. If you're ever headed out this way, feel free to get in touch. Happy to help with info or to bag some peaks:)

Hi Dave, great video! Question: Why are you shooting at ISO 100 when the D810's base ISO is 64? Thanks...
@DaveMorrow
@DaveMorrow 6 жыл бұрын
Yup. Go into the woods, shoot directly into the sunlight in a high dynamic range scene, exposing only for the highlight. Take a shot at 64 and 100. Then go back home and see which file you like working with more. I find that ISO100 is much more malleable in post, especially for high dynamic range scenes. It's also 2/3 stop quicker in exposure, with no noticeable difference in noise profile. So, long answer short, I prefer 100 over 64 through extensive testing in different scenarios.

Hi Dave. If your RGB histogram is right to the edge with nothing blown out, but one of the color channels is blown out, how do you correct that color channel so it is not blown out without affecting the RGB histogram by pulling it away from the edge? Thanks, I really enjoyed this video.
@DaveMorrow
@DaveMorrow 6 жыл бұрын
Great question. You just have to drop the exposure by a half stop or so and exposure to the right for the brightest color channel. You can see an example in the link below, if you watch that specific shooting example kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKWoqXmNlsiokJYm27s Eventually you'll start to know which color will blow out first and back off your exposure slightly to compensate. Red, Green & Yellow blow out really quickly. Blue hardly ever. Glad you liked it! Let me know if that makes sense to you:)

@DaveMorrow
@DaveMorrow 7 ай бұрын
Nice! Thanks. The picture profile affects the histogram shown on your camera (jpeg rendering of RAW FILE), but not the RAW file. So, put the camera profile on FLAT or NEUTRAL or whatever the least contrast profile is. That will match it as close as possible to the raw file.
