I'm hallucinating reading the comments. OP was right to try to resolve the problem with his wife. You are supposed to work a minimum on your marriage and not check out at the first difficulty. Sometimes it's the other who is in their edonism or who needs to better understand your needs, sometimes it's you who doesn't realize that you are neglectful or selfish. The only thing OP is at fault for is waiting “years” before communicating more actively with his wife.

I witnessed this growing up, but it was the husband taking the wife for granted. In the 20 or so years, I have witnessed this hundreds of times with the woman taking her husband for granted. Ironically, the husband paid the majority of the bills in both scenarios. In the latter, the man did more if not most of the domestic chores. In the end, the statistics on happiness over the last 150 years reveal that women have now achieved all they believed would bring them happiness, and yet, women, when surveyed, are the most "miserable" and least satisfied dating back to just after the American Civil War.
