One of the things that wasn't mentioned... The OP and his wife had rather tight finances. (That was her stated "excuse" for pawning the ring-she couldn't .) But pawning something itself is problematic. Either she outright sold the ring (in which case there was a chance the pawn shop might sell it before she gets a chance to buy it back), or she "lent" it, meaning the shop won't sell it but she has to make regular payments to maintain a claim to it. If money is so tight, those extra payments to the pawn shop will add to the financial strain.
