It sounds like Jen has developed a really good relationship with health and fitness, where she enjoys it but isn't obsessed by it. Its quite admirable, and probably easier to maintain. You can have the off burger, or pizza.. and you're doing things to the enjoyment of them rather than an arbitrary time pulled out of thin air.

The secret to longevity in life is vitality... Every living thing in the universe that isn't growing, is dieing. Mark, it seems the "real" progress in this journey was that you're the one who found the growth that will not only increase your longevity, but your vitality as well... which is just another way of saying enrichment (quality of life). Making your wife the "real" educator here. Yes, she improved as an athlete (or at least discovered her inner athlete), which will improve her longevity, but she already understood health is only one component... happy is the other. Well done all! Cheers!

This video made me cry. Im turning 40 this year, have had 5 kids, and have obsessed over the number on the scale for years. 2 years ago i decided to get consistant with working out and eating right. I eat triple what I've ever ate and am a healthy weight running marathons and cycling metrics. You both are a real inspiration to me. Im very thankful for your videos.

I hit 40 terrified and now, 6 months from 50 can't wait for it 😂 Its an amazing age to work out, no one else over 40 bothers to do it (at least, not in great numbers!) but you are still young enough to do anything! Love it!

At age 40 I (6' tall male) went from 200 lbs to 170 but gave myself 2 years. The key was never stepping on the scale! And instead focusing on habits (cleaned up diet, more exercise and weight lifting). The pounds came off on their own and I got stronger without obsessing on the metrics. Focus on the habits more and numbers less.

6’2” male here…..18 months ago I weighed 367lbs, I had diabetes, insanely high blood pressure, my cholesterol was terrible and my testosterone was all but gone. Today I’m 280lbs. I haven’t had high blood sugar for over a year. I can run again, I am getting really muscular and I feel amazing. My testosterone levels are above average now. I’ll be 45 in December and my goal is to be around 225 and cut in a year. It’s never too late to change.

Team work makes the dream work! My husband and I (both over 40 with knee issues) decided last year that we needed to do something or we wouldn’t be able to do anything after too long. We started just walking together, more so we had some time together and so he could decompress from work, and progressed in intensity, you can increase intensity by exaggerating movement, we found, although it makes you look like a loon. We looked like loons together but doing it together meant we could both change our lifestyle and feel supported. Winters here are a bit harsh so we joined a gym. He can be really hard on himself for not going as hard as he thinks he should and I have trouble with consistency due to boredom. I keep him from taking himself too seriously and remind him the goals will always shift but all progress is good progress, and he reminds me to not slack too much or we’ll be right back to where we started. People who haven’t seen us in a bit ask us what we’ve done, and we can say how proud we are of each other for sticking with it, together.
@jefejeffwell1113
@jefejeffwell1113 Жыл бұрын
I’ve found that “taking things seriously” in fitness is, for most people, unsustainable. Most people tend to set the bar low in their life in all things. That’s because of a fear of failure. When they fail, they quit (which is the only true failure and also, a tragedy.) But, when people go in without an expectation, they tend to live more for the journey as opposed to the outcome. It’s like traveling. When people have such a high expectation for the “magic” of a visit, only to arrive and find out it didn’t solve all of their problems (because it’s just normal life in a new location.) If more people chose to experience life with an open mind, lived one day at a time, we might actually start to have a healthy and cohesive population. It’s the rare few, like yourself, that can live for the goal and keep grinding until success. Beautiful message Mark! And congrats to Jenna for changing your perspective as much as she changed her lifestyle.

I spent my whole adult life trying to exercise and giving up within a week or two until about a year ago when I decided to only do 10 mins of a workout and get 5,000 steps a day. When I knew it would be over in ten mins, I found the idea of a workout much less daunting and even enjoyed how I felt after. Then I slowly pushed myself a little more over time. Do what works for you, and what works for most people is enjoying what they are doing. Little bits of improvement is always better than nothing!

Made some interesting observations and learnings here Mark. Exercise is individual and as people progress with (being active) lots of changes happen - physically and mentally. Mindset changes, goals change, your approach, how you think about exercise changes. Lots more variables involved. Great recap and it's great to see how you've both learned from the experience together 😊

Okay, now I'm bound to watch the rest of the videos with Jen :D Am a tad younger, a tad taller, a tad lighter; had an on and off relationship with at home workouts in the past, but am only now discovering MY WAY about being active (a self-defense course I took recently, for example, left me with some sore mornings after sweaty but enjoyable afternoons). I realized how stupid it is for me, a non-goal-oriented person, to try to be goal-oriented in physical activity, and all that "let's give it a go" mindset might actually take me way further than I've ever been. Anyway, only discovered this channel yesterday, and it's such a blast!

Cool story and it resonates. My wife has taken up a sport that I've been doing for decades so we can do it together and I'm super pleased about that. We go out and have a good time at her pace for as long as she wants. Other times I'll solo at my own pace but a lot more relaxed than previously. The change in pace has been good for me, less chance of injury for a start and not utterly flogged at the end of a session. Its all win.

I have always been a very self punishing all or nothing athlete. I had two kids and yook the past five years off from almost all regular exercise although i would argue that being a stay at home parent is hard physical work, especially if you're dedicated to biking and walking your kids around. In any case, after a health scare and some mildly elevated cholesterol numbers, i jumoed back into working out but this time i have decided to approach it with joy and kindness. Some days it's just 20 minutes of stretching but its something almost every day. Ive been at it for five months now and its absolutely worth it to take a more gentle, loving approach.

I use training videos of professional boxers to get myself insipired enough to haul my carcass out of bed most mornings. Made me a huge fan of of Lomachenko and Usyk but also served to show me how diverse their training, designed by Papa Lomachenko a sports psychologist, truly is. The diversity appears to keep them engaged and I'm guessing the same is probably the case for your wife. Keeping it fun seems to be the premise of the (IMHO) two top 5 active boxers in the world.

And I immediately knew I was envious of how casual he could be about his exercise. I knew that I was way too serious about my exercise and dreaded doing it. I have the same approach - it's just for fun, so it should BE fun. I enjoy trail ultras because of the scenery and general epicness - it's just a grand day out in the countryside. I would also mention that whilst I do sign up for organised events, I do so mainly because I am rubbish at directions and they put little flags out 🙂. Closing suggestion if I may be so bold: leave your headphones at home - don't insulate yourself from your environment - be in it.

The physical sensation of exertion feels like something bad when you are first starting to exercise, and coupled with the shortness of breath that can come with aerobic exercise, the net result is physiologically similar to something like a light panic feeling. It takes a long time to get accustomed to, and then develop an enjoyment of exertion through a process of physiological acclimation, fitness, and emotional confidence. If you are a fit person, this is something y ou have forgotten about. The most important thing is to be patient, and encouraging, and to not press someone to push harder than they are ready for. It will come, but if you press too hard too fast, you will fail harder and faster, and will likely not stay the course.

Finding ways to exercise and move that YOU enjoy is important - that's the key to longevity. Ideally you'd keep a relatively active lifestyle all your life. Competing is fun and might bring the most out of some people, but it shouldn't come at the expense of health and wellbeing. Elite athletes, for example, despite being in REALLY good shape, are many not very well off. They get injuries often and wear their body out prematurely

Ladies tend to be in their own personal time zone, they listen, learn, take things with great strides at their own pace. They don't want to compete with their partner, they just want to feel like they've done something good for them which is completely fair and reasonable. Way more reasonable than our man everything is competition approach, like it seems your mindset also used to be in. Living with your partner teaches you balance, and shows you your female partners endurance and mental stamina 👌

this was really really fresh.. imo.. specially for those of us who have the same approach you have…..or i should say.. HAD. :P Thanks very much for making & sharing this . Not all humans need to put out 0.1W of power more than the last time.. or cut 0.1second of the personal best… or even..actually squeeze the last gram of undesired body weight..for that matter.. One can personally improve, in every aspect of our-selves/lives incrementally , whilst enjoying the process. And…. additionally, (i wanna say primarily, here) i believe it is vital, to being able to find our niche..finding out where we prefer to be, where we have more fun, as that will influence all the rest. You can’t do that unless you are willing to.., and actually DO try everything. This is such a lesson on how LIFE really is.. thanks again ;)
