Had a nice pair of Yellow Golden's many years ago,my male was skittish and flew right past me, watch him soar into the woods. Those hens are missing grit or oyster she'll in their diet that's why they eat the shells. I'm a poultry judge in Michigan, have had birds all my life. I never saw the male again. That happened 30 years ago. I am so thrilled that you are teaching your family about small farms. Anytime I can help just reply to this comment I will see it. Good LUCK!!

So glad you got him back. Just yesterday my male quail, Peep, escaped while I was trying to take out my female’s egg (it was cracked. She also had another one which wasn’t cracked, so all is good). Then, he squeezed through my 2x3 black fence, and my puppy chased him. I was panicking at this moment. Luckily, he squeezed through my outer fence, and I took this chance to get my mom. We put my puppy away, and we found him near my garage. In my neighbor’s house, there’s cats living there, so I steered him back into my yard and closed the fence. Then my other neighbor let her dog out and he barked at him. My mom asked politely to put him away. Then I steered Peep towards the black fence. Re-Peep (my female) was waiting for him as he tried to squeeze through the fence. I took my chance and grabbed him. He tried to get out, but I refused to let go. My mom opened the coop, and I put him in. He ran straight into the bush I made him with pine tree sticks and a few others. When my puppy was let out again, she started barking at them, but they didn’t care, and she gave up. I got to school on time, and also, while I was putting Peep back in, I grabbed the cracked egg, so all is good. Also, I hate how you were rushing to get the golden pheasant. Please, don’t do that. That could scare them, and that’s why he flew. He looked very scared and you need to earn his trust to actually get him. What I mean, is like hatch them or something, maybe talk to them in a soft voice and let them rest. I heard rushing can give them a heart attack (which I think was the cause of Tin Man’s death) or just cause death somehow, like injuries. Could you give them some time? I just don’t wanna see that again. Thanks! -One of ur biggest fans :3

The most common problem in broody hens is when you see them "eating" a chick, is from them knowing that it didn't develop all the way and still has a sack left or because the chick has other complications that won't allow it to live long. The mother instinctively kills the chick in order for t not to suffer and die slowly. If you see a mother pecking at a hatching egg, leave it alone. If she kicks eggs out fork under her it's also because they are bad eggs and won't hatch, unless you have candled them and know there is life, leave them be.

Glad you caught the pheasant. He is a beauty. I nearly lost an expensive pigeon last week (she flew out and got to the roof of the house, I only got her back because she is not a strong flyer and when she came back down, she ended up between the fence and the house. The dogs alerted me to her location before anything bad could happen to her like a hungry hawk.) My pigeon is probably only a fraction of your pheasant cost but I was so relieved to get her back unharmed. Of course, I trimmed her wings after that just in case she didn't totally regret her decision and might try for another free flight.
