Interesting videos. WAAF, WAVE, and WASP Uniforms are all definitely an important part of our history and heritage. World War Two shaped the world. These styles and uniforms are more than seventy five years from the past. It was a very different time, the late 1930s - 1940s. My grandparents and many of my other relatives served in the war. There are always photos, lamps, telephones and shoes and outfits with many accessories around the house, reminding us of how America and our European relatives secured the international peace for my generation and my kids. Dacron, nylon, polyester, all sorts of combination wool, poly wool blend and silk blended material came from that era. Mostly out of necessity. & then when the war was over, the U. S. enjoyed about a half decade or more of peace. When the Air Force became a separate branch in 1947, some of the basic styles were kept. But the suits were blue, and flight clothing, branch issued leather jackets, helmets and the aircraft themselves were advancing. Not only international democracy, but the collective human endeavour into outer space as well. -Cpt. L. Feliciano

Lovely video, the uniforms suit you quite well. I have to say that I think the ATS one looks best on you. I am currently assembling my own uniform collection (US military), but have mostly had to get reproductions due to my size(men in WW2 were much smaller then I am), aside from a few bits and pieces that belonged to my grandfather during the war. lovely collection, lovely modeling, keep up the good work and keep history alive.

You look terrific and you have quite an extensive collection. I built up a collection of original WW2 women uniforms. I have the WAAF battledress and trousers (long and needed hemmiing) new and probably never worn even though original wartime label dated. I have FANY uniform Savile Rowe tailor, various WRENS and ATS unigirms both officers and other ranks. I also have a couple of MTC uniforms which is absolutely rare. I have a MTC or ATS officer's leather belt and the inside of the belt has the names and contact details of lots of servicemen she had aquinted.

I collect uniforms and medas as well. Even though I'm a bit new to it and having a hard time finding something that fits me which I should look into WWII and maybe WWI but they would be more expensive but I am a small boy after all. I don't know if you learn this later in the future since this video is 2 years old now, by law in United States I don't know if this is in other countries or not too but people have to take the patches and medals all off before selling a uniform.

Ohhh amazing video and amazing collection!! Btw I wonder how do you clean your uniforms especially for those old original ones?
@MissBethBelle3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Great question - the truth is they are rarely 'washed', but they are spot cleaned if necessary and aired as much as possible. If they do have to be properly washed, I hand wash them carefully (in the bath!) and then dry them flat, as hanging them to dry with their weight and the amount of water they hold could damage them.

Great video, very interesting with original uniforms. Have seen you sing at various events, so will watch out for which uniforms you have at future events. As an RAF re-enactor I know it is hard to find original uniforms in right size, condition, and price. Finally, how long are your legs?! I am almost 6 feet tall and my legs are shorter than yours!

Fantastic vid Beth, well done! I have wondered a few things about your uniforms before and I think you've covered everything there, really interesting! As for a favorite, that's a tricky one as they're all gorgeous! If you were to push me for an answer I think I'd have to pick the WAFF KD's. It really is difficult though as each one has something special about it. If you could somehow combine the best bits of all of them into one super uniform that would be amazing! PS you look fab in them all!

I came across your website as I was trying to show my wife what the old Wrens uniform looked like. You probably know but the blue badge on the left sleeve is a Telegraphist branch badge, I think it’s meant to represent the God Mercury, where so many of us “sparkies” did our branch training. In the Navy sparkies are Telegraphists of Comms, not electricians due to the sparks on the badge. The best Comms branch could transmit and receive morse at 30 words a minute. It’s even possible to recognise someone sending morse if you are used to their style. It’s not by counting dit’s and dahs, but by the sound of the whole letter. More like listening to music. Q for instance sounds like “God save the Queen”. F “did it hurt you”. The women who worked “the bomb”, the first computer at Bletchley Park were all sparkies so your jacket may have even belonged to one of them! Naval uniform should have a number in it indicating for what use it was for. The lower the number the more dressy it is. “8’” is working rig. “1’s” best rig. The blues uniform you have was still in service until the mid 90’s, when I left, when it was replaced by an adaptation of the male uniform. Female officers worse brass buttons on the same tunic, with blue rings for rank. I would imagine Silvermans or similar might have a matching skirt, and shoes. I’m now a police officer and I easily got a tunic and trousers (not issued any more) for court for a pittance. In my Naval service during the 80’s and early 90’s the cap would be worn square by both females and males, but I’m sure they were more interested in cutting a dash in wartime! The early Wrens in WW2 had something like a floppy tricorne - very good film “Perfect Strangers” shows these very well. Without getting all American thank you for your video and the respect you show our WW2 forefathers.

@@MissBethBelle - We ended up watching “Perfect Strangers”. A couple of things that may interest you - Deborah Kerr certainly didn’t wear her cap square! Robert Donat was brilliant Female ratings wore a lanyard, which they didn’t do when I was in the service. The rope lanyard was used to carry a knife, and I still have mine with my “Pussers Dirk”. Pusser is the purser on a ship who issues kit, I’m not being rude!
