2FA cookie stealing is also a thing, the attacker doesn't need access to a phone absolutely. This is also a vulnerability, though a way lesser one, for Yubikey.
@tubodenn2 жыл бұрын
100% agree on this one, easier to steal cookies on the very machine breached than trying to exploit a second device with 2FA. I mean I don't know YT 2FA workflow but I would assume that is risk based and there is device binding features there too, meaning the a device is trusted for a period of time after being identified as a trusted device from the user. SoD is key in this scenarios, and also response is fundamental and still part of security operations. Always use different users for admin and daily operations. Keep up the good work!

David, do not be discouraged, this could happen to any of us .as a matter of fact, one of my Instagram was hacked , but I was able to recover it in 2 days . Glad to see your content and site are still alive. Sometimes you are limited to foreseeing what others do when hacking, and usually people only learn from others either building commercial products to safe guard people, or better still people like yourself sharing information. There will alway be a back door of some sort sadly, it is more about minimising the impact of being hacked, by locking accounts to lower levels, and backing up important data, you at least mitigate the level of damage done, and allow a restore point. Let’s keep the channel alive, by hitting that thumbs up.

Good luck, congrats for having everything back so quickly. I've been studying from a lot of different sources, and honestly it is hard to get a clue on who targets you. It is so hard to feel safe these days, specially if you're still learning things, you become an easy target. I have also been hacked recently and it made my life much harder, we waste time and energy dealing with the things. May god bless Neil with his altruism, and provide him health and strength to remain resilient through the hard days. Cheers

In the past I had to leave my car parked outside. I was super vigilant to make sure it was locked and not keep belongs inside. After many years I forgot to lock it, JUST 1 TIME and all my stuff got stolen. I thought it was just bad luck that a thief chose that 1 night to check my car. The police told me no, at least 1 person walks the neighborhood every night checking for unlocked doors on cars. Lesson learned: in security it only takes 1 time to get hacked - our systems are under constant attack. Glad you got your channel restored and appreciate your candid video!

Since you asked how you handled this - you took action (identified issue, remediation, report to IPC), you shared news of it quickly and openly with your viewers, and you shared attacker attribution and their techniques, tactics, and procedures. Without further details of what went on behind the scenes in your shop, I’d say what you did was very good, and I’m not sure what you could be expected to do better given the circumstances. Perhaps when you have the time, you could share more details about how the MFA was exploited. MFA seems to be thought of as a panacea in the eyes of many people, much the same way some people feel VPN will protect you from everything. I also really appreciate you taking responsibility for it - not that this incident is “on you”, but I admire your extreme ownership of the incident. In the end, understand what happened, address it, learn from it and move forward aware of what you learned.

David, the weakest link is ALWAYS going to be the warm pudgie. A critical analysis of personnel will help, but I always keep in mind the Japanese Phrase: Saru mo ki kara ochiiru. Which translates to "Even monkeys fall from trees." Security is like that too so mitigate as best you can but figure out an acceptable idea for your pain point and always be aware of it. Eventually complacency creeps into your security posture so keep that in mind. As someone who used to be deep into security, the best suggestions I could share with you are: 1) NEVER trust email 2) Turn your damn computer off when you're not using it (that would include servers too if you have sensitive shit on it). 3) Have a good Contigency Plan in place just in case your monkey falls from the tree. 4) Windows suck. But realize it is still the person using it that is your primary problem. Windows just compounds it, like a monkey swinging in a tree. Mac Sucks too. Linux sucks too (but not as sucky as the others). You can ONLY UN-SUCK them so much. Human complacency and/or stupidity will still over or under whelm them eventually. 5) You're still awesome and thank you for sharing like you do!

Hi David.. It is said that if it did't kill you, it will strengthen you.. Look at the bright side. You are now able to know your weaknesses and the faults in your system. They helped you. In fact, you did not lose anything as the response to the attak proved the efficiency of you and your team. Do not forget, You are the one who always says that we learn lessons daily. Regards, Neil be brave and get well soon ♡♡♡♡

What doesn't kill you, definitely makes you stronger. Kudos to the work you do, analyzing networks and their securities.

Really sorry this happened to your channel. Have to say, I loved that non-Windows advice (yes, I've been following that!). It is a problem that KZbin offers so many fallbacks to 2FA. But I saw another channel also have someone replying (using similar name to channel owner) and saying they'd won a prize for their comment on the channel, and to connect to their Telegram channel for further details. Of course, it all looked like the channel owner and I nearly fell for it, but luckily it was a stupid scammer who left his phone number visible, and that showed a person using an MTN Nigeria phone number. So another tip is to watch out for that lure (subscribers), and also to hide your own phone number on any instant messenger service as you don't want to give your phone number away (it is juicy vector to exploit, and gets past 2FA often).

Glad you were able to recover from this, David! It is not a matter of IF you get hacked; it is a matter of WHEN you get hacked. Your disaster recovery went much better than some! Learn your lessons from this and go through your entire defenses and look at where you can make improvements. Best of luck!
