I love this song. I love this band! They represent a happy and optimistic time in my life. I’m embarrassed to admit this but this song makes my stomach feel like a vacuum that is being sucked in. Some people call this a heavy heart but I feel it in my stomach. It’s not pain. It’s like extraordinary numbness which pulls my spine forward in a slump. It’s as if my abdominal cavity and it’s muscle structure have collapsed due to years of wear (akin to the forum in Rome). So, like a tree that has had a wedge cut out of one side, my body falls forward onto itself. If I could go back in time to the period when this song was released and playing on the radio I would never leave. I had just graduated from law school a year or two prior to this song’s release. I fell for the cruelest bait of them all known as “optimism.” I dreamed of a glorious future. I wanted material things. I wanted prestige. I had mentally noted EVERYTHING I expected out of my life in front of me. Oddly I neglected to add “happiness” and “fulfillment” to that dreamy materialistic set of notes I scribed into my primitive brain. Everything on that mental note was realized. I was granted everything I asked for. EVERYTHING! Dioyenisis must have been my patron deity, as she had been for Silenus Midas, because she delivered to me precisely what I asked for but without any warning as to the repercussions. If my young stupid self could see me visually now she would think that she will hit jackpot. But unless she can look into my hollow empty sorrow filled heart she will never know what a wretched path I took.

You’re still alive which means you can still change that path. I’m likely a few years younger than you but I definitely can relate to what you mean. I think it’s far harder for us now than it was back when we thought we were invincible and shooting for the moon. Perhaps we should have settled for some place with a nice quiet beach? I don’t think optimism is bait, I think it’s more of a spin of the roulette wheel and sometimes it just doesn’t spin your way. But that’s when you say F this casino and find another. Dust yourself off, learn from your mistakes and go looking for happy. Sometimes it’s found in the most obscure places. 😊

My daughter and her hubby met at a Barenaked Ladies concert in Toronto many moons ago. They are now married and expecting their second child : )

Truly the best BNL performance I've seen! Loved it! These guys are so relaxed these days. Making music for themselves as much as anyone else. Nice to see.

I'm going to guess, given the lyric changes, that it is warmer in AZ than in Canada.

+Sean MacKinlay bands typically don't stay together forever. I'm glad they are still playing... regardless of whether they are whole or not.
