Having had to check the time in a blackout, I discovered that the lid of a hunter can catch light and cast it on the face of the watch. Makes me wonder if that contributed to its popularity with the outdoors.

I am an orchestra conductor and I really need to tell the time before and sometimes during my concert. And the most convenient option for me is a pocket watch! I can't bring a phone with me on stage. It's heavy, it's bulky, I turn it down before the performance and it stays in my dressing room. If I would wear a wrist watch, I had to take it down, because it's weight in my wrist is a burden. I don't wat it to drag too much of attention to my wrist either. So I settled down with a pocket watch. I wear a three piece suit so I don't need to button my coat, and the timepiece fits nicely in my jacket pocket. I prefer a small open face because there's nothing that can do damage to it and I place it in the pocket faced incide, towards me. I was quite impressed when I realised how much of attention to details was given in the past towards convenience.

Yes. The watch is marked 'Regent hills' which is probably a Chinese brand. It looks like a copy of a Hamilton pocket watch. It is well made.

Looking for some advice: I got a nice vintage mechanical pocket watch from my grandad and have been winding it every day for 4 months so far. The habit is quite soothing. But I'm going on holiday in a few weeks and don't really want to take it with me to avoid ruining the metal with sun cream or sweat (it's a hot sunny place). There are lots of good pocket watches on the market- For everyday use I would suggest investing in a new pocket watch as compared to an antique. I have been very happy with both the look and performance of my (new) Charles Hubert time pieces and would highly recommend them. It is hard for me to recommend any specific antique time pieces because there are many; each offering something unique. And while antique watches can be of good quality, it can be difficult and expensive to maintain them. Also, I suggest investing in a mechanical (hand-wound) pocket watch rather then a quartz (battery operated) one. They look nicer and will last longer.

The watch that has been in my family from very early in the 20th Century is an open face Railroad type. In addition to that watch (which I don't carry), I have two more mechanical watches, both open face Railroad style. For everyday, I carry a quartz movement multi function pocket watch, again with an open face. I have been involved in cross country horseback riding a good part of my life and I presently own and ride a "hunter" (a thoroughbred), but I never liked the "hunter" case. Only the open face is quickly glanced at making it easy to read on horseback. Just as important, the open face doesn't require a lot of fumbling to get it open when wearing riding gloves. The open face is slim enough to quickly come out of and back into a pocket for those times when the group might gallop off suddenly. It has always been my belief that the Hunter case was developed to protect the watch from the inevitable falls that occur while hunting, but today's hard crystal watches and steel cases are sufficiently rugged. Truth is though, while riding I usually wear a rugged, but inexpensive quartz wrist watch, all in plastic and carry a pocket watch when not riding.

If you can’t afford a ball, Hamilton, Illinois or Rolex .... I’d recommend Gotham. Japanese quartz movements don’t go wrong. Great looking historical inspired pieces at historically low prices.

Reading a clock is very simple the short hand is the hour hand that's what our it is the long hand is the minute hand you read it every number is equivalent to 5 minutes for the minute hand so you read it and it would be 5:15 as an example

I know this is two years old, but just so people know, yes they can. Originally, watches were worn around the neck, then transferred to the wrist for women and the pocket for men. Then the world wars hit and the pocket watch got stuck to the wrist for easy use in the trenches. And it's been that way ever since.

So far I believe I prefer using my double half hunter particularly because I kinda don’t feel like showing my watches in public that I often check the time while keeping a watch concealed with my hand, which is tricky to do with a full hunter requiring to open the front cover, but with a half hunter I can still see the time even with the front cover closed. Plus being part double hunter I can also have it sitting upright in display as a miniature clock.

In this age of mineral and sapphire glass I find a metal cover on the watch just as useless as I would see them on a wristwatch, actually more useless as the wristwatch is more exposed to bumps. If the purpose of the watch is to indicate the hour in a fast way, open face is the only logical solution for a new pocket watch. If one wants to play the character of a roaring twenties film (or earlier age) then yes, a hunter watch might be right.
