I think the best option would be for China, India and ASEAN nations to come together and stop businesses with the military junta. This would cut off their income/money. I say this because Western imposed sanctions do very little when many investments are from China, India and other ASEAN countries. Despite saying this, I'm pretty sure there's a "no political intervention" policy in ASEAN. So I don't know how much I can expect from that. The army being sent to Myanmar would lead to the country being a war zone, China definitely won't stand still if US were to send troops to a country literally south of them. Yet, what most Burmese people want right now is for anyone with weapons and arms to swipe away Burmese military (we now call them terrorists). This is how desperate we are. There are some saying "If we have to fall from war, we don't care as long as we can uproot the military and pull them down together." Just giving my two cents as a Burmese person. Edit: spelling errors

In Indonesia up until 1998 military is part of government (especially as Suharto is part of military) however after the 1998 reform they lost their legislation power without any bloodshed (there's bloodshed leading to reform, but that was to oust Suharto more than the military themselves), because the higher ups were all agree with it. It also had to do with the way Indonesian and Myanmar's military org differs, as Myanmar's military is essentially self-funding orgs (they had tons of companies and stuff to keep them afloat) while Indo's rely on govt money, so they're not really able to oust the govt.

@ahmadsolehyn2953 жыл бұрын
@@chris7263 the history is that Britain had control in the area in the 20th century. But the people of Iran wanted independence like other british colony and they manage to get it and installed their own democracy. Due to britain wanted to control iran's oil, it wanted iran back. Both countries, iran and britain, asked US for aid. But US sided with british and they overthrew Iran's democratic government with a monarchy/dictatorship that is allies with britain and US. Thus, Britain and US got Iran's oil rigs. But after awhile, there was islamic revolt in the country which overthrew the monarchy to the government of today's Iran. The currebt government is quite hostile to US, thus US isn't very fancy with Iranians. That's why i said Oil. Because it was one of the main reason US had staged a coup on a democratic country. However, the Iran's government now is not full democratic due to the people unable to vote for their Main Leader but they can vote for a "president". You are not wrong tho. This was missing a few key points: first of all the military is very unusual in that the leadership is leftist-leaning, and the country was one of the only Marxist military dictatorships in history from 1962-88. Usually of course the army is a force for aristocratic Classicalism but the Ne Win and his associates in the Burmese military had largely started off as Communist rebels against the Japanese and British. In 1988 when the uprising happened, Ne Win quit and the military ended Socialism and turned the country Classicalist, though they still leaned heavily towards Communist China for support. The protesters however wanted the military totally gone from power, and thus continued demonstrating. But the new Classicalist junta cracked down even harder than Ne Win had, this is why it’s inaccurate to show Myanmar as a democracy between 1988-90, as thousands of students were killed by the still-CCP-friendly new junta, which was Classicalist on paper but was largely composed of Ne Win’s old Communist buddies. The military continued to hold power during the 1990 election and simply never gave it up after they lost. All the events since then, including the last few weeks, all happened under this same backdrop, with Burma still stuck in this very rare and unusual situation: a still left-leaning pro-CCP military, against a conservative pro-America democratic opposition, which is the complete opposite of how politics usually works. For this reason Myanmar is one of the most unusual situations and helps explains why, among other things, the student groups favor the colonial name “Burma”, while the military favors “Myanmar”, again in most countries this would be the reversed.
@awijaya21163 жыл бұрын
'Pro-CCP' military is only true in the sense that there's no other foreign organization they've any ties with, considering the PRC has supplied arms to multiple ethnic separatist groups in Myanmar in the past. There's been indicators that the PRC leadership was opposed to the coup (it's logical, too), but now has to choose between 2 bad options. Denounce coup and lose all of their investments in the country or support coup to protect investments, but increasing regional instability (since the opposition will find it harder to un-coup the government now) as a result. (I mean, the third option is Myanmar gets Yugoslavia'd into a half-dozen wartorn mountainous jungle shitholes, but that's clearly the outcome everyone wants to avoid) Agreed on everything else you mentioned though.

@@charlesmadre5568 Tatmadaw’s roots are the Burmese Independence Army, which had communist leanings. That holds true to today. A lot of their messaging is pseudo-communist in nature, for instance. More and more evidence recently indicates that the Junta chief of Myanmar, Min Aung Hlaing, has created a false image of China supporting the coup initially, particularly spreading amongst his army, so that the people of Myanmar believed without a doubt and felt hostility toward China accordingly. When the people express to continuing siding with NLD to protest against his coup and request the prompt discharge of DASSK (Daw Aung San Suu Kyi), he realized that it's unlikely to put forward his coup in an easy way. With the enormous and daily protests, the government failed to operate regularly. Meanwhile, on the other hand, China unexpectedly refused to recognize the legitimacy of its government. As a result, he, therefore, sent an Israeli lobbyist, called Ari Ben Menashe, to the US and seeks understanding. To my analysis, he calculatedly aimed at dividing the West from DASSK, as well as China. In other words, he was trying to convey a message to the West that rescuing DASSK would be harmful to the West's interest because "DASSK has been staying too close to China." Also, he made a gesture that he would be more willing to cooperate with the West than DASSK. I can almost conclude that he may be running out of gimmicks from his pocket and hoping to convince the West to exchange for his freedom. With my understanding, the reason why he reacted just tremendously opposite to his actions all of a sudden because China, in a recent talk with him, advised him to return the power to NLD peacefully. However, this inevitably surprised and irritated him. Subsequently, he felt depressed and declined to accept the proposition offered by China. With his continuous killing and suppression of his people, he seemingly has got no way out eventually. Not surprisingly, he is now nearly saying to the US, "Come take my country and set me free in return; DASSK is a puppet government of China. I am just a loyal friend of yours".

Just days before the coup in Myanmar, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) sent $ 350 million to Myanmar as emergency aid in the country's handling of the corona virus. According to the IMF, there were no obligations from Myanmar and the IMF has little opportunity to get an overview of where the money now ends up. "We are following developments closely. We are deeply concerned about how the events are affecting the Myanmar people," said a spokesman for the IMF.

What I can see happening is the people who want democracy become insurgents creating a civil war in Myanmar which would also invigorate the separatist groups which could collapse the country. This would cause the military to be unable to function being stretched thin with the collapse of the country, and ultimately only when China loses faith in the Burmese military will it lose the war and a new regime can take charge.

The United Nations needs to intervene with military force here. Just watching this unfold doing nothing when you can is immoral.
@lyuuy74773 жыл бұрын
i disagree. First united nations is a forum of nations not a government. And even if so , it is still wrong, cause it would set the precedence for united nations to interfere with any country they want which would essentially make them an unelected world government/dictatorship

There is MISTAKE. Your phrasing is completely wrong. PROTESTS are NOT getting violent. Protests are perfectly peaceful. It's the military crackdowns that are violent. Please change that. Or atleast put an annotation correction. Also the military has been sending out thugs during day and night to start fires in civilian neighborhoods. I know this is TLDR but your portrayal in no way captures the brutality and sadism of the soldiers shooting peaceful protestors right on the head. Appreciate it tho because Myanmar situation requires global attention and UNSC's immediate action, not just statements.

If india dares to even consider helping any outside force or it's own force in undermining the Myanmar military, india stands to lose Arunachal Pradesh and other regions to China. Myanmar's military non interference in other countries affairs is very key for India being able to suppress separatism the Assam, arunchal Pradesh and other regions.China also has too much investment in Myanmar to be enemies with the military.Already the Democratic government was dragging their feet in allowing china to invest in their country. Sending Foreign forces into Myanmar to weaken the military will only influence separatism. Separatism will unite the people behind the Army and turn against any democratic government. Best scenario, invention of a new form of governance that has compromises for both the military junta and the democratic camp. ie "power sharing". If you choose pure democracy then the country will burn and fracture with separatism. Remember there is no country that indigenous multi-ethnic groups which is able to practice pure democracy.
