Pileated Woodpeckers Hunt and Eat Juicy Grubs

The Pileated Woodpeckers are finding some huge high-protein grubs or wood boring beetle larvae in that rotting tree stump they've been working on and hearing the activity of the grubs helps the woodpeckers find them. They are smart and use the old stump like a stockpile. Rather than tear it all up at once they are working it slowly and come back for more grubs that will grow in it. Sort of like a grub warehouse!

Does the woodpecker have a sense for where the grubs are in the stump or does it just peck and hope to come across them?

I'm like you! I really love my little feathered friends so it's hard to pick one as a favorite, but this guy would be on my short list. This bird was the inspiration for Woody Woodpecker by Walt Lantz, they disrupted a vacation he and his wife were on. 😄👍

Yes, they are so charismatic they get your attention. I always thought it odd that the Ivory Bills which are essentially the same went extinct because they couldn't adapt outside of certain southern swamp forests, but these guys are so adaptable. BB

Nothing wrong with shooting through a window! (Five minutes ago, I was just filming my goldfinches as they took to their new feeder through a window.) I've seen pileated woodpeckers twice so far, and the last time a few weeks ago, I noticed what it sounds like when they peck at trees--a lot different than what I usually hear from the downy woodpeckers. I sure do like it when I see area managers leaving dead trees around. Good footage is when you can see their pupils, so bravo!

Thanks, yeah Pileated Woodpeckers sound like somebody taking a hatchet to a tree, and in my case they usually give a tropical monkey call or two right before they come in that tips me off! BB

Faves at my feeder include the female Cardinal (stunning and stealthy), the common Robin (the boss of the yard!) and male downy woodpeckers (very active). Bird nerd :)

They are huge! I wish I could see one in real life. Do they visit the Deep South during the year? What size is it compared to other common birds? Oh, I see the crow now. Pretty big bird!

Right near the ground. Wow. Whenever I try to see them they are flying from tree to tree up high and they always land behind the tree! I am convinced they do this deliberately.

The way he kept going back and forth between excavations, it seemed like he was triangulating where the grubs were.
