Salomon must have been overjoyed to receive numbers 5 & 6 from Haydn. 6 is such a joy to play, whichever instrument, and Haydn cleverly leaves the first violin space to play eloquently, passing most of the hard work to the other three, with the result that it sings. Mosaiques have such beautiful balance, emphasising the increased democracy of the writing. Salomon was obviously a very different character from Tost!
