I think the interesting thing about this is that this actually exists but only at the ant level. Just like how an infected person in this game "wants to go to a high place"(not stoned imao) the infected ant will move to a high spot(like a leaf) and die. The fungi will grow a stalk from the ant's head and release spores into the atmosphere.

This is very much based off of the real life Cordyceps, in which when ants and other bugs get infected, they first attempt to spread the fungus before wanting to go to a high place (a leaf of plant) and bloom into a fungus.

I think the fact that you can't actually avoid being infected even if you do everything right is a pretty dark aspect. You did everything right, did your own research, stood up for yourself, were morally and ethically unimpeachable through the whole course of the game, by giving help to your neighbor and the random guy who broke into your basement... and you still get infected and die. Too bad. This isn't a problem that you can solve just on your own, and your best efforts just buy a couple hours.

I think the best ending "leaves it up to interpretation" whether or not the player character got infected. Personally I am sure that the player character is not infected because there aren't any visible spores in the air at that ending.

A: It could be a hallucination. He could be hallucinating that there are no spores in the air. B: You could be right, but it is hard to tell. C: I personally think that he is likely infected, maybe with a version that takes longer to take over. That would kinda explain why he doesn't just infect Hugo then Onna. Instead, he just goes outside and slowly succumbs to the infection at the observatory. D: even if the game ends with him surviving, it is unlikely that he will live for long. It is likely that humanity is going to die with how deadly and infectious the disease is.

The player is definitely infected. After the announcement (which I strongly suspect is the result of whatever officer was in charge of sounding the all-clear succumbing), the PC walks all over the moldy streets. The most minute contact with the spores brings about infection. Stepping on the mold must surely cause some to suspend in the air. Why even go to the observatory at all? Because it is a high place and he must go there...

I don't have all the info I need to make a proper theory but the reason I think the spores got as bad, was the hive mind infected those who knew about its existence and slowly worked its way up the proverbial food chain as demonstrated by Ray and the weather forecasters. It may or may not be manmade.

I like the idea of no good ending, just different shades of bad myself I just wish that the "Normal" ending had a little more polish. Maybe a conversation with one of the characters you saved before you go outside, maybe a cg that shows that you're infected but is more subtle about it? Idk, I just kept thinking I had gotten the worst ending when I got the normal one and kept trying again after first playthrough.

yeah.... As sad as it is, i cant imagine a good ending after seeing how utterly fucked the city is after the storm. They'd have to stay inside for months waiting for authorities to clean everything up and that's IF they even do that, chances are the city is just getting marked as lost and no one would come to help. But even if they did, staying inside for months while waiting, without having had the time to prepare beforehand would also be a death sentence, while water isnt an issue, food would definely run out if they didnt had time to prepare and didnt know they would have to spend so much time locked in.

It's a great little detail that Ray's suit clearly doesn't fit properly: the shirt is too small and the collar can't be fully closed around his neck, the jacket is too short and exposes his belt, and it's clearly wrinkled and messy. It's pretty clear he just got it from somewhere, maybe even killed someone to get it, and slapped it on.

I think they're implying that the entire CDC has fallen to the infection, it's evolved somehow, and they're now working against people. Ray's able to act totally normal despite being infected and, if he's telling the truth about working for the plague control center, it could be that they called the warning to lock everyone inside, went door to door infecting people until enough had fallen to saturate the city in spores, then called "all clear" to lure the remaining survivors out to be infected.

I'm just wondering is this a refence to that fungi that infects fruit flies by being consumed by them, then they take a few days to start hijacking the flies making them go to a high spot they die then as they are dead the fungi makes the fly wings spread open then its abdomen shoots out spores.
