I can't tell you how overjoyed I am watching a fellow removing parts from a box, then the packing, plastic, and tape. Soooo relaxing. I could watch for hours, which is EXACTLY what this video is all about. No real information here, but if boring is your thing, you should be right at home.

Mr Robert Stirling, who invented the Stirling engine in 1816 would be delighted that these little engines are so available & work so well, but he might be dismayed that they never were really used for much of anything other than a display of Stirling power.

Robert Stirling definitely would be proud to see how far his engine has come, and that it is no longer forgotten like it used to be. One good use I know for them is driving generators, an easy way to convert mechanical energy into electrical using only heat to power the engine

These little heat engines are fine, but what most people don’t realize is that they’re actually heat differential engines. In other words, the “coolness” of the cold side is just as important as the “hotness” of the hot side. So for the best fuel economy, the glass bulb on the hot side should be contained within an aluminum sleeve, which captures more heat from the flame. And the other side should be water cooled.
@ferrumignis

_"These little heat engines are fine, but what most people don’t realize is that they’re actually heat differential engines. "_ All heat engines are, pretty much by definition. They all depend on bringing a working fluid from a higher temperature state to a lower temperature state by extracting energy, and they need some kind of heat source to raise the temperature of the working fluid to start the cycle.

That's quite true if you're trying to put a working load on them for sure. Though these little guys are mostly meant for show, so as long as it has enough of a differential to self-sustain, it does the job. StirlingKit does sell jacketed engines as well if you want the extra power. not to mention a few mini ICE engines at last check.

Okay, I'm 74 and I've understood the principles the thermal dynamics of a Stirling Engine since I was a kid ; but my question is where does the acoustic part come in ? I must add that I am a sound engineer, so I'm a bit puzzled. All Stirling Engines are noisy to operate. By the way, back in the 1950's these large engines were being used is some rural areas of Texas where I grew up to provided electrical power to small farming communities around East Texas, my uncle use to maintain one.

A resonant standing soundwave inside the the cylinder with the hot metal filinings causes the air to move between the filing (hot) and the piston end (cold) thus playing the role of the displacer. It is not a very efficient displacer, but it works.

you mean using it as a generator? People have. They're not particularly efficient, so you can't generate much. But they'll light up a small LED alright. there are other things you can do to squeeze more power out of them (metal hot side, liquid cooled cold side, multiple hot ends, ect) too.

They both have what is basically steel wool, one is finer than the other. I do not understand the principle of these engine ( maybe someone can comment) my thought is it is to retain the heat at that end of the tube.
@boblow2186
@boblow2186 Жыл бұрын
Think the steel wool is to increase the surface area in side the tube. So you heat the out side of the tube witch heats the steel wool then it transfer to the air next to it. Also keeps the heat at that end of the tube and keeps it away from the piston.

Being nice to look at/mechanical artpiece is why they where designed, basically. You can make a Stirling do a bit of work/more powerful (metal hot side to soak in more heat, liquid cool the cold side so it sheds as much heat as it can, multiple pistons, ect), but you don't see as much moving around when you do.

@@myfordboy Dear friend, it is your channel and your decision, what you are going to present. I have just tried to give you my point of view, not insulting you. Anyway, you have to know it the best yourself - you were making lot of models, gadgets, tools etc. Almost everything you can buy in the professional quality from China. But it is "garbage". You enjoy it for one day and then you put it on the shelf and you forget about it. But if you make it yourself, if you have to think about every detail, materials, tolerances... then it never turns to garbage. Because is becomes part of your life. Am I correct? And this is the difference between your early videos and todays "unboxing" videos. It does not matter, how great are theses gadgets, you are promoting, it is ... garbage. Again - it is just my feeling, maybe I am wrong and people are more happy with these promotional videos. I wish you all the best!

@@65cj55 You did not get my point. All these gadgets can be much, much better than I or Myfordboy or Clickspring are able to make. But still there is huge difference between just to buy it, or put all your creativity, time, wisdom, knowledge... to the build. I mean it is difference between seeing nice picture of Old Faithful or experiencing it in nature yourself. And the same if I see Mayforboy working on lathe, using his tricks and tips, I can learn them and use them on my mini lathe later too. But if I see just unboxing ... maybe great ... stuff, it is useless and it does not give me anything new. And again, it is my point of view, maybe I am the alone on the world, who sees it this way.
