FALSE, communal housing in multi-story structures is much more efficient use of resources and space. Tiny homes are a terrible idea. We need to cram people into big housing units.

I am a testament that this could happen to anyone. The last 4 years have been hell; first 2 years COVID no income; next 2 years had involved major surgery requiring 23 days in intensive care and recovery. Of course no income. But I own my home and had saved like a dog over the years and thankfully I keep the lights and fought back the wolves at my door. I am now digging out of the hole and feel blessed to still live in a beautiful home, have a car and pay my bills. I am not rich but extremely blessed and oh so happy now. But people must have compassion for our fellow human beings and their journey thru homelessness. Given the unknowns anybody could become homeless so be kind and be humble.

In California, some people wanted to help by building tiny homes ($1200 each) so homeless could get in out of the weather. The government, who were doing very little to help, said you can't do that, collected up the tiny homes and destroyed them, leaving the people out in the weather again. Government officials care only for their own "version of the truth" and have no respect for the property of the people. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGfLaJmCZ5eKeac

Being poor can get you stuck in cycles you cant get out of and a lot of people are struggling with mental illness on top of that. No one in their right mind is going to "choose" to be destitute. Addressing the homeless issue will take different approaches. To wring your hands of the situation and just make a blanket statement that they are all "homeless by choice" is simply ignorance talking and shows a lack of empathy on your part. But hey, there are a lot of people like you around so i am sure youll find people who will agree with you. Youre still wrong though.

Some people are already one last charge to a maxed out credit card from homelessness but will not admit it. Looking wealthy is a huge problem for many people in the USA. You see it on a daily basis from fancy cars, designer clothes with the a big logo, golden teeth, big chains and sending little Susie to a private school. Most wealthy people are quiet and do not draw attention to themselves because they don’t want family or friends asking for money… 😂

In December 2013, a tiny home development called Quixote Village was completed in Olympia, WA. It has 30 tiny cottages, with their own 1/2 bath, for homeless adults. The 2-acre development also has a large common area with a kitchen, bath/shower rooms, and 2 multi-purpose rooms. This is believed to be the first publically-subsidized community of its kind in the country. Yay for the Evergreen State. There are many other such developments in our state now.

I moved to a colder climate in my early 20's, coming from a situation where I had been homeless for 2 months before I was given an opportunity to straighten my life up. I lived in San Diego, where it is comfortable enough to sleep outside, even on a really cold night. Just have to protect your feet, first and foremost. They get cold easily even with a light breeze at night. I can't imagine how much scarier it would be to have to deal with subzero temps. People steal propane to try to stay warm at night in a tent, which is incredibly dangerous. Be grateful for whatever opportunity you get, and remember there is probably someone out there worse off than you are.

@@NeedMoreEats Its a good way to put your life into perspective and fend off depression. Too easy to get self involved when your desperately poor or homeless. I always tell myself others have it worse. Depression is a vicious circle that gets nobody anywhere. Being homeless is humiliating in of itself. Reminding yourself that others have less than you or live in war torn cities can help you not feel as bad about your situation, which can motivate you to work harder to rectify your own situation. It's a positive thing, not a judgmental thing.

This is wonderful. So many of these people are at no true fault for living on the streets. Resources like this help them survive and maintain a sense of dignity. My folks are involved in a similar program in Toledo, OH. Not as many units but they are a little bigger and meant for small families, usually a mother and child from what I understand. My mom is an avid quilter, so she makes quilts that go to these places to help make it feel a little more inviting. Plus, my stepdad and a bunch of other guys from our church volunteered their time to help build them in the first place. It always does my heart good to see people acting on their more charitable impulses.

To a certain extent, failure to plan is planing to fail. Yes, things happen that are out of our control, but if we plan ahead for them then we can survive them. Health problems are inevitable for all of us, but not all of us used our money wisely by saving or paying off a home while we could work. But not everyone thinks like that. And less and less people think like that every day. They just see an unavoidable event and say "nothing I could do, not my fault", but they had the latest iPhone when things were going well.

I stay in one of these currently in Cali and it definitely gives you privacy unlike the usual shelter. I also stay at a low barrier shelter and so I don't have curfews and no phone rules either. The downside is pallets have no plugs/outlets, bathroom, ventilation(so the walls get wet and your blakets and stuff will grow toxic black mold), heat or air. It's basically like being in a tent made of metal. Some ppl here still get their pallets robbed. I would say a pallet is good if you don't currently have a tent or for when your tent floods or you can't find a good spot. It does protect you from rain but there are many openings in the walls due to how They're made, so some ppl's pallets leak and bugs can get in.

I love this! You really think it can't happen to you but it can. It happened to me and my family last year and we have jobs. Sometimes circus answers happen that's beyond your control. I thank God that we are no longer in that, situation but it's nice to see things like this being done for people that need it.

Only in the USA do you allow people to lose everything bc of illness. You should be ashamed. You're country is so hateful to each other you'd rather pay an insurance company $500 a month for Heath insurance than $100 a month for your Medicare system for all. Your politicians have made you believe that universal health care is bad. It isn't. Your Medicare system is awesome. Why not let everyone enjoy it? Bc if sheer utter selfish ambition and greed. You hate each other. You're the only advanced country that refuses to care for it's in people and you wonder why youre in debt to China? Bc you won't pay to keep your own people healthy, you won't pay to educate your own people, and now you're #36 in the world in education. You don't invest in your in people, your country will fail. Well, it already has and we watch and cry for you from afar. Your selfishness will be your down fall.

Why isn't this standard practice everywhere? Everyone deserves a bare minimum of shelter. And any competent government should be able to provide that.

We had a make shift shelter set up, the great people living around it started complaining. The city threw them off the privately own property saying it wasn't safe for them to stay in their own tents. The owner was fine with the situation. City cleared them out, so the homeless moved into an abandon nursing home, it caught fire and 20 people died. The only homeless shelter we have now is for females only and most of them are transitioning out of prison. Otherwise, the city turns it's head and act like they don't exist.

This is the comment I was looking for. While I’m sure their grateful for the roof over their heads , I think not having your own bathroom is a little inhumane. If you have to go late at night or have bladder problem that requires frequent visit! Sharing a kitchen is okay because they probably bring food for! But not the bathrooms please! Just saying!

@@netta96 only talking about the bathrooms. Since the bathrooms are communal and closed off you'd never know if someone were being assaulted in there. If having private bathrooms is too much additional money then maybe they could at least look into security to be stationed nearby and walk the grounds and do check-ins after dark.
