How to Check the Jeep Transmission Oil Level

The NAG1 transmission is used by Chrysler in many models. Searching the internet you'll find a good amount of information on that transmission, and how to check the oil level.
It seems a little tricky at first, but it is not. One thing you need is a dipstick. One that measures the level from the bottom of the oil pan. Stick it into the dipstick tube as far as possible, while the engine is running, and the shifter in P.
There is no way around it. Look for a dealer dipstick on the internet, or go to a local autoparts store. It is possible to find one for a few dollars. The dipstick should come with a manual and a trans fluid level chart.
As for the temperature, you want to measure the oil level, when the trans fluid is hot. Why would you not measure at the temperature at which the transmission is used most of the time, the operating temperature. That temp maybe different from car to car, but after driving for about 15 minutes it should reach that temperature. Unless it is winter, and very cold in the area you drive. At that point it may take longer. If you uncertain you hopefully have an instrument panel, a board computer that shows that temperature.
It can only be read, when the transmission is in gear. D works best. Don't forget to shift back to P once you read the temp.

Chrysler dropped the ball with the trans dipstick. Called my local dealer just too see how much they would rip off a Jeep owner. They wanted to charge 120$ just to check my transmission fluid level!!! What a complete scam.

On a 2014 Grand Cherokee can the dashboard warning be trusted to tell you transmission fluid is low? 80k miles here and never changed Transmission fluid.

I don't think it can tell you trans fluid levels. Not sure, if it has a low warning. From what i saw in my car, i strongly recommend an oil change earlier than the 100k interval!

How many quarts does the 580 transmission with shallow pan hold on a filter and fluid change. Ive seen 5.3 quarts many places but i seem to think 4 or 4-1/2 is more accurate

Oh yes, suck it out, remove it. It is not good to have too much oil in there. Did you capture the old oil, and did you measure how much came out? I hope you put in the same amount that came out as a starting point. If it is too much in there, take it out. That's why they have that sheet to get an accurate amount of oil in there!

It’s on the vehicle panel, just go to vehicle info and set your Jeep on drive and it should tell you the temp

@@Dragonesa41083 I think the models older than 2010 don’t have the option panel on the dash. In the newer models it has a panel with a bunch of options & details about the car, eco, fluid levels, temp out and in, etc. And what you mean doesn’t say V6 anywhere

I always have a problem with the dipstick. It seems to be constantly riding the edge off the tube and scraping fluid onto the dpstic, cant get an accurate reading.

Wtf is wrong with you commenters? It's a legitimate question. Previous dipsticks gave you a range, like high or low, or some might actually say add 1pt. This has no dipstick so how could you tell how much to add if low. Why not tell the viewers how much added will change the reading how much. Sure, you could try trial & error, but if the poster has enough experience to convey how to check level, why not go the extra little bit and include the info asked?

i used a small pump for brake fluid from Harbor Freight, but to do the oil change, i remove the oil pan, clean the magnet, and change the filter too.

Since the level is measured in mm from the bottom of the oil pan, you could probably use any dipstick that is long enough and fits in the hole.

Ricardo Campos the level is measured from the bottom of the oil pan. That means it has to go all the way in. Give it a good push. But understand that the stick is longer than a regular oil dipstick. The handle of the transmission dip stick does not go all the way, just the tip of the stick has to touch the bottom of the oil pan. Does that make sense?

Many years ago it used to be in neutral only, then it changed to park. But in those cases it was written right on the dipstick, so there was no question. There is no dipstick on the NAG1. And the poster NEVER said specifically what gear to check the level in. So settle down, captain obvious.
