How many commandments are there in the Torah? There are not just 10 commandments, but 613! How do we know this, what are they and how do they apply to our modern Jewish life. In honor of the Jewish holiday of Shavuot let's do some Jewish learning all about our Jewish laws!

I love the ways and Laws of Yah - they are part of the Ketubah between Him and Yisra'el. It's not a matter of requirement, but because you love G-d and want to do things His way. The Tenahk tells us how Yisra'el had moved away from these mitvots and in doing so, lost the blessings. Since returning to the land, Yisra'el is sure to follow the commands so that they do not lose the land again. What makes it a deeper blessing is when we follow because we love too, not because we have too. Thank you for this.

Yo do not "accept catholicism"? What does that mean? What parts are troubling you? You may not realize where these ideas come from any why. Catholicism isn't wrong. It's a matter of who you are and your goals.

When two commandments are in conflict the positive will most likely trump the negative commandment. Such as; we are commanded we're not to work on the Sabbath. But we're commanded in saving lives. Saving a life is more important than than resting on the Sabbath .Thus, the positive is more important than performing the negative commandment. Another example is that during certain times we are commanded that thou shall not shed blood . This is a negative commandment but if it is time to perform a circumcision (a positive commandment) becomes more important to perform . In such cases the negative is fulfilled by Fulfilling the positive.

Hi Marion, thank you for this video. I was born jewish but beyond age 9 I had no more jewish train I ng. In that last year we began to learn things like how we should treat our body as holy, like burying our nail clippings or use them to clean our other nails. I never learned anymore good teaching like that, but always wanted to know more. Could you recommend any good books about these deeper teachings? Thanks. Have a great day! Love and peace! Ruth

On the topic of idols.... I am an artist and I (unsurprisingly) have a special interest in Jewish art and it's history. How would you interpret "idol"? There are so many beautiful, spiritual, moving works of art. Do you feel that it's simply a graven image or something deeper than that, maybe a statue or piece that removes one's focus from G-d and turns it towards someone or something else? My personal belief is that art is of massive importance (a picture is worth a thousand words) and can move someone to draw closer to G-d because art evokes feelings and emotions that day to day life can cause us to push aside. (That's just my two cents and I wondered about other opinions.) Awesome video! .

May I ask you, that is there a different versions to interpret Halakha, like there is Orthodox Judaism and Conservative Judaism? Of course it may vary from Rabbi to Rabbi, but are there some schools of thought?

If you are speaking of our teacher Moses brother of Aharon and then of Moses Maimonides .. then I encourage you to read Maimonides’ other books.. Guide for the Perplexed, Causes of Symptoms, Torah and Philosophic Quest, Medicine in the Mishneh Torah. Maimonides advised eating 1 or 2 meals daily. He also taught that leaders such as rabbis should support themselves with jobs and not take money for their spiritual work. He himself supported his family with his work as a physician and his rabbinical work was voluntary.

If you study them, they're summed up in those 10 laws. However, one detail I do wonder about: does adoption or marrying into parenthood also make the children culturally and presumably ethnically Jewish, such as with Esther's children via marriage that are presumed to be the case, regarding Jewish history. I want to grasp this particular issue more clearly, and you might be of assistance in that regard- fine by me either way- I just want to grasp my neighbors' faith and culture more clearly.

@@Hisloyalservantslistenlove613c But would her stepchildren inherit her ethnicity, pray tell, in that case? Either way is fine; I simply want to understand that detail... and from what I've learned, the ethnicity goes down the female line of ancestry in their society. So how would it work if some Jewish lady marries a widower who's got children- I mean a legitimate marriage where both are free to wed to be specific? Again, I'm simply interested in deducing the mechanics, and this lady in these videos is pretty open about her culture and ethnicity; so overall, if able, I'm asking primarily her, the speaker in this video. But anyone who knows the mechanics of their culture will do well enough to fill the necessary info.

A good rule of thumb about the martial act is the matter of researching what is involved, via a religious lens; and the biggest law of them all is the commandment to avoid killing innocents- particularly unborn babies and newly fertilized eggs that're also thus babies. IVF does mass-murder unborn babies, so that's an absolute no-no according to the commandment to avoid participating in the killing of the innocent; same with abortion: forbidden; and things like sperm donation: don't do it; these "fertility clinics" really do need to be looked into with a critical eye- in the case of any expecting mom; she already *is* a mom from the moment of the fertilization of her unborn baby on- we know this from medical science when the baby's made... and once a parent, that can never ever be revoked. As for things like sperm donation: that's a blatant violation of the commandments involving marriage; it is to be pictured as a form of adultery- marital infidelity and cannot be engaged in no matter what; it is akin to paying a man to father your child when he won't be parenting the child- a form of essentially prostitution and must be avoided no matter what... yes, your Christian and especially Catholic neighbors do share the same laws on marriage, on Right to Life, on requirement to pay one's laborers just wage for their labor; as well as freedom to practice their religious obligations and keep holy the Sabath day- you'd find a lot in common with those neighbors of yours, Miss, on ethical laws and moral stances.
