19:50 - Snare on 2 & 4 works to create forward momentum for the same reason that snapping on/emphasizing 2 & 4 creates forward momentum in jazz. Because 1 & 3 will always be the strong beats in the bar, they do not need emphasis. Activating the weak beats (or weak parts of the beat as in the closed/open HH on the “and”) propels the music into the next strong beat, the next bar, and the next section.

"activating the weak beats" is a great way to phrase that. Excellent.

This reminded me of your talk with Tom Whitwell in the best possible way. Robin and Tom both think incredibly deeply about the things they engage with, in a way that really inspires the listener to approach their own interests with a greater passion and scrutiny. I really liked the decision to not focus on the gear, too; I'd much rather hear about the thoughts behind the music (and the person) than the knobs and keys that were moved because of them. There hasn't been a bad episode yet, but this joins Tom's and Olivier's episodes on the short list of podcasts that I can put on repeat endlessly and always walk away from with something new. :)
@codey1391

Agreed, this one and the Tom Whitwell one are the best episodes. I usually turn off the ones that go on about gear, but I love the ones that get more into culture, history and process.

Much appreciated. We consciously avoided talking about gear as I explained to someone elsewhere in the comments here, to open the conversation and ideas out to others who might feel intimidated or simply bored by my favourite modulation module or something :-D

For me, Snare following Kick pulls us forward on account of the Decay. If you roll some Doubles & then stomp on the Kick, it's kinda like landing a Kick Flip. Or watching things fall off a shelf. The scattered, anxious Snare energy all called back in towards center. Grounding, terminating. As opposed to the boom of the Kick launching the Snare into the atmosphere... & listening to it ring out! Some Jungle from the '90s was really reliant on Snare led Patterns. It has a totally different vibe. It's like watching a film of someone running, backwards. Programming a Drum Machine with a Snare on the one is actually kind of difficult. You often wind up realizing that you've inadvertently written the other patterns as if the Kick were the first note. But if you can manage to resist... it has interesting results.

Yes! Perhaps more musicians should take this approach. It's always good to see people thinking outside the music business box and living to tell the tale. It's nice to think music can be created and appreciated as art sometimes and not just purely for entertainment or commercial purposes. .. Thanks so much for the response, I'll get back to you about the wedding gig!!

Maybe your best episode? A really engaging conversation. It was particularly nice to watch on video. I wish you could have done a walk around on camera with some kit like you did with ebcidic. Thanks Clayton, sweet words indeed. We very intentionally avoided talking about particular modules, patches or processes, although I could have happily droned about those things for sure. We just agreed that we both felt it important to share ideas, to inspire others in some ways, and to offer a little bit of history to who someone is and how they think. It also opens out the Podcast to others who might be rather intimidated or less enthusiastic about the technical side of creating music. I mean I don't honestly watch any cookery shows, or particularly care about which spices they choose, or how long it sat in the oven for. I only know what my taste buds tell me :-D Happy to have someone visit to film the studio though as I'm literally just moving it all this week into a much nicer space here :-D

I would be concerned that that might be rather an overdose for the public at large though. I'm already rambling for too long here! there are already interviews with me online regarding my set up, for example here kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaOqk5eXpr5gsNU - then again perhaps once I've finished building my new studio here I might well make some videos myself walking through my set up here if it's of interest to people.
@LaboratoryGrey
@LaboratoryGrey 6 жыл бұрын
Respectfully disagree that you ramble too long. You're an engaging speaker. In my observation, the person directing the questioning has a big impact on the responses, (Alex has a keen mind for such things.) and as I'm sure you'd agree, so does the space! Thank you for the link. And yes, please on the studio videos!

Great interview. And what an absolute gent. Robin is a real pleasure to listen to. Also I had an idea: Mylar mentioned it would be cool if you could hit randomize on your actual modular case like you can on modulargrid: I thought of a simple way to kind of achieve this - maybe you and someone you know agree to swap a case/rig for a while. Before you swap them you both remove all your modules and hand the case over to each other all disconnected. Then each person gets to rebuild the other's system off on their own and enjoy it for a while. When the time comes to give back each other's cases they come back to the original owner in a completely new configuration that each person may never have thought of. No explanation. Your modules. Different system.This could inspire some interesting creativity. Just a thought, hrmm..

Excellent sit down. Must've been an easy interview cause that guy just takes you on the journey. I also think the best thing about smartphones is the fact that they are portable recording devices. I started using the Rode app with my iphone 4 maybe 5 years ago, which I believe is no longer in operation but I currently work with the TW recorder with an iphone 6, which has a lot of editing capabilities right in it. I still need to pick up a mic. I can plug in though. I used to use dictaphones and cassette recorders. I still have some tapes that need digitizing and I applaud Robin for being that organized, that's an inspiration. Not so gear heavy, but you guys touched on some important aspects of the creative path and I like to hear about old weird tape recorders and stuff like that. Cheers!

This one was less about machines/synths, but the subject matter is great. Very close to my own journey through sound. Ever since I as young I've used and been interested in these same things. Using radios musically to create new things. I've often just taken cassette records everywhere and recorded surroundings. I use my phone to do that a lot still. I got a mini tascam record with stereo mics, but unfortunately haven't really used it. I'm on holiday this next week. No better time than now to do that. This has been an inspirational talk touching on many things I been thinking about lately. All these things are why I've been loving the Morphagene and experimenting with it heavily lately. In a way it's the perfect musical device I've always longed for.

Only just listened to this tonight - what a great interview! Totally inspiring stuff. Was only going to listen to the first few minutes :-) I think the biggest thing is that is completely inspires us to engage in the sound around us...there was much that Robin mentioned which I can identify with...from recording air conditioning units in toilets (I used to be obsessed with the background hum of the air con in our local Hombase for years), through to making cassette audio recordings of family life after receiving a sanyo cassette recorder one year for Christmas. It started a habit for me of recoding family members. My mother died a couple of years ago, and just before she died I sat down with her and recorded some of her memories and created a track featuring her talking about one of her relatives dying, which I found completely powerful...so this whole theme of this podcast - beyond the kit and kaboodle...just brilliant. And just incase you wanna hear what it sounded like: soundcloud.com/ian-o-4/requiem-clean-sweep

Michael Palin also keeps a daily diary. Pretty amazing. I've kept journals, recording snippets of travels and daily life for the last 33 years, and am now on my 13th volume. I feel that the diaries/journals are not necessarily only for you but for offspring to see just what was going on and how you were feeling at that time. As for the recordings, I've recorded life stories of parents before they passed away and of aunts and uncles before their stories are lost in time. I think that that is what immortalizes them - making sure that their memories live on through subsequent generations.
@RobinRimbaudScanner
@RobinRimbaudScanner 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, and great that you've kept a diary on and off like this over the years. With no offspring and no family to leave my stories too, they are only intended for me. They have never been written with the understanding that someone else might benefit or appreciate them. In some ways they are a simple cleansing at the end of each day, a little like brushing your teeth, but of course a way of storing memory and moments. Interesting regarding Michael Palin, although he stated 'late' at the age of 26 and has written his diary with the understanding that it will be shared and published. I've been approached several times by publishers but have absolutely no interest whatsoever in making them public, especially since it would obviously alter the way in which i write my diary. Suddenly there would be an audience, so one would obviously begin to write towards them and not only for yourself. Same when Brian Eno published his diaries. They were so obviously written for publication. Mine lacks any of these intentions :-D Fantastic regarding the audio recordings! Well done!

Your comment regarding an audience to the journals does strike true. I am writing them in anticipation (and hopes) that my children and theirs will take interest. But, in doing so, I am also unquestionably avoiding writing anything disparaging and am definitely less than as candid as I should be as I don't want them to have a "OMG, grandpa did THIS?" -moment 50 years down the line.

This is... Something special. The topic of the ephemeral nature of memory is such a powerful one that resonates with me deeply, as I imagine it does with many who have watched this. But to focus on a very specific facet of that notion - Alex did you say that Orbital were an important musical touchstone in your formative years? Because they certainly were for me. In Sides in particular still does powerful things to me: kzbin.info/www/bejne/omjQl6ClqruIiLs Likewise does this magical Crystal Method track, Bad Stone: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5K4m3WjaKegedk I hope that at least one other person happens upon this who has similarly intense memories associated with those songs. If so, consider that my gift to you, friend.

Yes! I think In Sides is an amazing record (the green album was definitely one of the first “albums” proper that grabbed me). Some incredible sound design, and I think it set me up to like electro...

Hope those CD-R’s are backed up on HDD somewhere. CD-R’s tend to fade to blank after 10 years

@@LowGainElectronics wow, sorry to hear that. Not had that problem with a single disc and must have gone through about 1500 CDr's at least. I used a professional Pioneer burner at the time so perhaps that helped somehow! Good luck then!
