The Buzz Aldrin story reminds me of when I was working a commercial booth at Oshkosh. It was slow on the last day of the show. A distinguished looking gentleman stopped by, curious about our satellite communications product. For about twenty minutes we had a very nice conversation about the satellite business. I never let on that I knew who he was. He never let on that he knew I knew who he was. No selfies, no autographs, just a very nice conversation with the last man to walk on the moon.

Great job giving that man the opportunity to converse with you despite how tired you were. Most of the greatest humble personalities have no ego so they tend to appear as “normal” people. It's nice to see someone talking about the realities of the job. Commuting is an essential part of the equation for so many pilots in order to make the job work, yet it's at the least a major pain, and very often a nightmare when weather, delays, or full flights prevent you from getting home and seeing your family. It's not something that should be taken lightly, but certainly a perk of the job....because who would ever want to live in Newark, NJ!

That quote you said at the end “Everything comes at a cost”. That really hit me. I’m a few weeks away from my private pilot checkride with the end goal of stepping foot into a United Airlines cockpit one day. Your videos are always so inspirational and is helping me move forward in my flight training to one day, hopefully, fly side by side with you. Everything comes at a cost and even though flight training is really expensive and a huge financial burden, I know it will be worth it when we both fly together. Thank you so much for being one of the reasons for achieving my dreams and I hope to meet you in person soon. I’m a ramp agent on the United ramp in Fort Myers Florida and I love to travel. I’m always flying through Newark and it’s like my second home. I hope to meet you in person in the near future. Thank you so much for everything you do and inspiring us by just being you.

Loved the Buzz Aldrin story. In December 2005 there was a dedication ceremony at Santa Monica Airport of the Douglas DC-3 mounted on a pole. Major aviation figures were to be there including Bob Hoover and Buzz. I figured it would be one of my best opportunities of all time, to meet Buzz. Brought along an authentically signed photo of Neil Armstrong I had purchased at Long Beach flea. Finally got the courage to walk up to seated Buzz and introduce myself. Clumsily. Showed him photo of Armstrong and asked "Do you know this guy"? He laughed. Then I mumbled unsteadily, "Buzz would you mind signing this TO ME, on the backing? It's not for sale, ever, will be a family heirloom" I nervously gushed. He was very gracious and signed with the date and place AND, most interestingly, wrote "103rd anniversary of Kitty Hawk". He didn't have to do that. And charmingly, it was actually the 102nd anniversary!! Deceased astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom's nephew was there and he filmed my meeting with Buzz. Wow, what a day. I learned to fly in Miami in 1978 a 23, got my private ticket in a 152 and after 94 hours total in the log book hung it all up as it got to be an expensive pastime. In 1980 the pilot demand/hiring situation was not anything like it is now or perhaps I would have gone the airline pilot route. The times were different. Envious of you Paul, except for the constant very early mornings that pilots and flight attendants both seem to accept as a major part of their lives. As others on here have mentioned, your constant positive attitude, admirable general curiosity about the physical world, and genuine friendliness towards all, despite the difficulties of the job, are amazing to watch. I much enjoy your videos.

I really enjoy watching these videos, it gives so much insight into the fun and trips you have, while other content creators focus on more technical aspects. I like both. The combination has overcome my fear of flying. I'm not partisan in favour of one company or other - hope OK to also say that the behaviour of an American Airlines captain on my flight from Chicago to London this summer was outstanding and his excellent leadership made a scary situation manageable. There was a RWY closure after we boarded, all RWYs! Due to lightning. He showed his presence. I think company or at least ground was inclined to keep us to the next day, yet he decided he really wanted to get us out and as soon as RWY open, managed to get us out during a small window before it closed again. Ex military I think. We took off over the lake with electrical storms out the window. Severe turbulence. Yet his explanation made me confident he knew what he was doing. Kudos to all Captains out there

@ashwilliams93

@@Payton_oh Cool man. It’s tough to train consistently and be a pilot. I fly charter so it’s definitely a challenge. I also roll super chill because of the physical requirements of the job/ needing all limbs to be working 100%, can’t have concussions, etc. I almost quit Jiu Jitsu because of these things. But then realized I’d rather roll chill, inconsistently, and be quick to tap, then not train at all. As far as flying goes- Getting to the “good career flying” part is tough. I’d consider myself a seasoned pilot. But I’m a 2 year while belt. And I think flying is similar to Jiu Jitsu- Keep going past the point where everybody else would quit and push through the setbacks and discouraging times. Keep your eye on the end goal. There are no unreasonable goals… only unreasonable timelines. Everybody is hiring right now, so you’re in a good spot. But even if things turn, if you love it, keep going. I really can’t speak for the Jiu Jitsu thing. But as far as learning to fly… again similar to jiu jitsu- Enjoy the process, study, drill, practice flows, realize discouragement is a healthy part of the process, swallow your pride, keep your ego in check, backseat flights if you can. Take charge of your own training/ learning. Don’t expect everybody to spoon feed you. Breathe. Just. Keep. Going.

Somehow your feed came up in my listing Paul....and when I saw you worked for United, I frowned...because of a bad experience way back in 2000. Needless to say...I don't fly your airline anymore because of that event/experience anymore. But....watched a few of your videos anyways....cause the KZbin suggestions are usually cool....and seems they were right. Enjoy your vlog style and I kinda sympathize with you on "commuting to New Jersey" as I did that for 2 years back in the early 90's. Boston to East Rutherford every week via car/train. Anyways....I hit the subscribe option, because like I said...cool style and videos. Always got time for those. I'll let you try to change my opinion on your employer....lol Maybe. I hear you on the "cost" of commuting...as I now work from home. Hope you had a great vacation!

Sorry to hear that! I appreciate you watching the vids though! If you ever end up on a United flight in EWR, lmk because I’m there a lot.

Great video! As a dispatcher it is always fun and enlightening to see what y’all really do on your trips and everything involved in that. 20:41 Proof positive that math skills are not needed for you to fly.

Great and mind-blowing content, I admired your family-work-life- balance lifestyle. I always wanted to be a pilot, but the war in my mother land (Sierra Leone) turned my dream upside down, resulting in me doing me something else..... Keep the great work and keep the great content coming.

Another great video. Yeah commuting is pretty tough especially for a guy in the regionals but man I love where I live and it's a great place to raise a family.

Grandson, got to meet and chat with him today, and I also see per vids how well polished he is. Hope they see one another again, so my grandson can pick up lots of tips in his quest to become an airline pilot.

Good story about Buzz...had you only known who he was, I'm sure that conversation would have been entirely different. Every time I'm on a flight and I see a pilot commuting, I never talk to him/her because I know that they are tired and need rest. But, as a guy that drives Cessna 172 on the weekends, I will always be curious about your experiences flying the 757 rocketship.

Really enjoy your channel and videos Paul. I’m also a pilot flying longhaul around the world and it’s great to see your production quality and brilliant story telling inspire a new generation of pilots. It’s the new way of showing them the flight deck and our life in this post-911 world. Keep it up and if you’re ever in Hong Kong track me down, I’ll show you some hidden sights.

This video is so inspiring for me I have already had a passion for flying planes ever since I was six years old when I was 10 years old I got to fly an airplane because it was just me and the pilot but I just wanted to say keep up the great videos

Your commuting style is perfect! So many choose the last option and miss it.. that sucks for ops. Nice videos!

i grew up in Long Beach, and my mom and dad took me to see the Dominator about 1 week after it grounded. The grain onboard was off loaded on the "floor" of Long Beach Port, where all the local birds ate well and became obese. Over 60 years ago.

I remember seeing the SS Dominator as a child after running aground. I have also hiked down down to the Dominator wreck site from Lunada Bay as you did. I also reconized the hotel you stayed in the Los Angeles Area.

We had the same experience with the shipwreck hike. Ended up flying the drone to take a look at it. Those rocks are so tough to walk on.

No kidding. I would have kept going but hiking back in the dark on bowling ball sized rocks didn’t seem wise.

This was really eye opening for me. As an aspiring pilot I was always worried about the concept of only being limited to the airliners or operations around my living area, but seeing that some people work for ops from the other side of the world sort of opens my options

My son commuted from Chicago to San Fran for 2 years...Same uber driver pick up at 3:45....Same seat on plane...Same flight attendants...Reported for work with his trusty carryon in tow by 9:00am.....The plane was always filled. His other co-worked did same kind of flight from Boston. The called it the "amount of suffering one had to endure". That plane was completely filled with commuters heading to work. A whole different kind of world. Cute fun fact...I can tell the quality of a company by the hotel they book for their employees. Marriot/United is considered top tier. I sure you know this. Love your videos ...Thanks!!
