TIME STAMP IS IN COMMENT SECTION.
Graphic design is all around us, in a myriad of forms, both on screen and in print, yet it is always made up of images and words to create a communication goal. This four-course sequence exposes students to the fundamental skills required to make sophisticated graphic design: process, historical context, and communication through image-making and typography. The sequence is completed by a capstone project that applies the skills of each course and peer feedback in a finished branding project suitable for a professional portfolio.

Hello fellow designers! Just finished the entire lecture. It is definitely worth it. Please understand that not each second of the lecture will teach you something new and unique, remember its a beginners course. But even with that being said, the perspectives and mindsets and insights they provide to the most simple concepts is fascinating and unlocks a whole new world of thinking. For ex, Ive been very comfortable with the concept of Denotation and Conotation for years now, but each time they mentioned it in the image making or typography section, I feel like they spark ideas and connections that I haven't thought of. Im glad I watched and took notes on it. It took me a total of 2 months and it was with it. I encourage you all to stay vigilant and do your best to watch. It will give you a great foundation of knowledge so moving forward you can practice the process of design. Especially the history section so many ideas we will encounter in the future has already been discussed in the past. Thank you my fellow designer, We will all make it to where we're supposed to be I promise!

@@JohannBaritono Hii Johann ive been graphic designing full time for 3 years, watching this course a few months ago. Heres the best advice i can offer from what I know: 1. Practice Practice Practice. Getting better at anything is 50% Knowledge 50% Application. If you watch the entirety of this lecture and dont apply its teachings with consistent practice then you will not retain any value from the 10 hours (more more like 20+ hours if your taking notes/pausing/breaks) we’ve spent watching this lecture. 2. See the world as a Designer. Whenever your out and about in the world and stumble across a piece of design ( a poster/Billboard/social media/logo/etc) you should stop and take a moment to analyze the design, How youd recreate it in Adobe or real life, and why the designer designed it the way that it did. doing this consistently will give you a mental library of effective compositions and design thinking. 3. Be inventive & Dont stay comfortable. Theres so many times where i have a design concept (im more of a conceptual designer than an technical designer) and i tell myself “thatd be such a good poster, but i couldnt make that.” this level of thinking will keep you and and design skills stagnant. Its often very uncomfortable to try something new. We’re almost guaranteed to be bad at it. But Growth comes from pain and discomfort. Be Brave and inventive about the things your curious about. Literally just 1 hour ago I had an idea for a design that seemed a bit out of my photoshop skillset, but said fuck it ill give it a shot anyway. and it cane out great! I am now more confident in doing similar tasks. Its okay to make bad art! 4. Keep it Fun! ive worked with several experienced designer who are totally complacent with where they are in their skillset. they know what they know and they dont what they dont. Its just a job to them. to many, thats perfectly fine. But i fully believe that passion takes us places we though we’d never reach. Keeping Graphic Design fun and passionate will fuel you to power through tough projects, discover new methods, meet other designers, and grow. Theres probably a lot more that can be said but this is what I could think of during my 15 minute break. Thank you and Good luck!

I am excited to learn. I moved to Africa to work with a nonprofit, but quickly realized the needs are greater than I can touch. Attempting to appeal for help at this point simply consists of Facebook posts, where even simple things like italics are not offered, and unedited photos that are most often submitted so I cannot control composition. I have so much to learn!!

Just FYI everyone, these courses were not made by these people. You don't owe them any thanks for taking the time to create it and give it out free, as it isn't theirs to give, neither should you be complimenting them for its quality or how useful it is to a beginner, as they had nothing to do with it. This is just a compilation of every video from the Calarts Graphic Design specialisation on Coursera.

Totally worth it. Graphic design is here to stay and every single company needs a graphic designer. It's a fun job, you will always find an opportunity, and it's always growing and changing. But you have to know that a degree in graphic design is not easy to get like most people would think. It's just as hard as getting other degrees.

@@stringedout You don't NEED a degree in graphic design to be successful or good at what you do, especially if you plan on doing freelance, however, when applying for a job at a company or design firm having a degree can push you above other applicants who don't. In the end, it's not necessary at all. The choice is up to you :)
