The blips i believe are actually due to image brightness! I have experienced similar issues on my GBS 8200 until I put a 100 ohm resistor from the green Y terminal to ground to pull down the signal village a bit. Worked like a charm. The benefit has carried over to the upgrade I did to GBS control
@jamon1567
@jamon1567 3 жыл бұрын
Are you referring to what's going on very noticeably at 36:59 (and throughout the whole video)? It was seriously bothering me and I came into the comments and didn't see anyone else mention it but you. If this is something the GBS is doing, then I guess I'm out, but wanted to make sure it wasn't just my computer/monitor.
@WodahsEht
@WodahsEht 3 жыл бұрын
The GBS seems to be expecting signals outside the normal YPbPr spec. (Keep in mind it was originally intended to convert arcade machines to LCD.) It's fairly easy to add a resistor without soldering to test the theory.
@naliboi93

Thanks for your comment. Now I'm curious. Say if Coury didn't use the HDMI to Component transcoder, but instead opted to use VGA input (via a hdmi to vga transcoder/convertor), would these blips still be present? From what you're saying, this seems to arise from using component input. I'm looking to see if I can do some 240p downscaling into my PAL CRT over SCART via a DIY GBS Control (and a decent RGBHV to RGBs sync combiner on the output). I want to see what issues I may run into and look for fixes.

This downscaler would seemingly be a perfect fit for those "classic" collections on gen 5 and 6 consoles that were criticized for their 480i resolutions. I'm talking about titles like Sega's Classic Collection and Genesis Collection as well as Sega's Smash Pack on the Dreamcast. Any 2D fighters from these eras that display in 480i could also benefit from this conversion. Great video.

I keep wondering if a solution might be for the renderer to actually "see" and respond to that signal in real time after every frame, simply composing it's signal with the blanked scan lines either odd or even based entirely on that real time measure instead of the current method which has to actively switch into semi-fixed "modes" of operation. In other words, it would be a 480p signal every time with the timing signal at the end of each frame telling the OSSC where to insert blank lines. I feel like if the processor could run fast enough to make that on-the-fly rendering, then it would "naturally" work without any notable gap where it was switching modes.

What a treat this video was! I'd never have thought to check out what modern consoles look like on CRT but I'm so glad you did, every game was such an enjoyable little experiment to witness.... but now you've got me back on eBay looking for PVMs... >_
@rars0n
@rars0n 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I don't think PVMs are worth it, at least not for me. There are plenty of good consumer grade CRTs just sitting around waiting to be trashed. My girlfriend brought home a 27" Trinitron that her coworker was trying to get rid of. Her coworker didn't understand why anyone would want a CRT television. This particular Trinitron has composite and S-video, and while I would have preferred component as well, I was shocked by how good the Sega Saturn looks even over composite. The colors and black levels are SO much better than my HDTV, I vastly prefer this set regardless of input used. 27" is my sweet spot. Anything bigger is going to be significantly heavier. I had a 32" Panasonic Tau CRT that I bought right near the end of CRT manufacturing, and while that TV had a great picture, it was literally 200 lbs and a pain in the ass to move. I ended up giving it away just so that I wouldn't have to move it again. Luckily, last year my work was getting rid of some old electronics including a 27" version of the same Tau that I had, so I got dibs on it. It's a true flat-tube TV with component input, a really great comb filter for composite signals, and something like 800 lines of horizontal resolution. The downside is that it's much heavier than the Sony, at nearly 110 lbs. But that's right on the edge of what I'm willing to deal with in terms of weight. My point being, I was looking into buying a 14" Sony PVM (20" was just too expensive and heavy for my taste), and while that might be fine for a desk setup, I decided that 14" was too small for a main gaming monitor. I like playing light gun games with my girlfriend, and a 27" is big enough for that. While a PVM will certainly give you a slightly better picture, I think the jump from going from an LCD flat panel TV back to a consumer CRT is much greater than going from CRT to PVM. PVMs are more of a pain to set up, they're heavier for a given size, and shipping one is a huge risk. With the Panasonic TV, I can plug all of my consoles in via component and get RGB-quality video without any of the hassle of actually using an RGB monitor. Just some things to keep in mind. For me, a PVM just didn't make much sense because I wanted a simple setup and a larger screen size, and the image quality of a PVM wasn't enough to justify the cost and hassle, especially when I had access to some perfectly good TVs for free. If you ask around, you'll probably find someone that has one that they're not using and will happily give to you. Even if it's a "crappy" set, just take it home and give it a try and you might be surprised by how much better you like it for older games.

I happened upon an abandoned Sony Trinitron TV in an attic space. I hooked up most of my retro consoles using composite running through multiple AV selectors and splitters. I have the signal split to go to the Trinitron and an old Zenith portable CRT TV (what makes it portable is the handle and car adapter). All of my old games look significantly better on it and I cannot go back to playing them on a modern LCD monitor. There is one exception: To stream the games onto my capture card, I got an AV to HDMI converter with built in screen ratio settings. The icing on the cake was recently getting a Genki Shadowcast allowing me to play the games on my computer monitor and manage game capture software all on the same screen.

Fun fact: 240p isn't a bad resolution for videos if they are converted well. Watching KZbin videos in 240p directly on the website/application is a really bad idea, because of the super low bitrate compression bullshit of KZbin, but if you convert the videos yourself at good settings, you will probably get a pretty nice output (it will not be perfect, but not terrible either) on older phones or portable media players with no bitrate issues whatsoever.

Love this video. I threw together a GBSC just a few months ago and am very happy with this cheap scaler. My diy version is certainly "a jumble of wires and pcbs, just a mess." I've mostly been using it to upscale extra consoles that aren't in my crt setup to my 4k living room tv. I'm very exited to learn about the motion adaptive deinterlacing mentioned tword the beginning of the episode, I wonder if this can do away with the flicker from 480i ps2 games on a crt. All together my GBS control cost less than $50 to put together (scart input, sync cleaner, clock gen, etc...) and the scaling is definitely good enough in my eyes not to shell out for an OSSC.

IF anything CRTs have already proven that 1080p(rather high line res is more proper term) ETC is possible after all they exist OLEDs and Shit arent improving at all and the industry is hyper focused on the numbers of pixels they can jam into a display but we are getting to the point of minor to zilch for improvement the HD TVs of today are pretty much the HD tvs of 2006 the price went down. As it is Displays despite the "advancements" havent done shit at all and are still playing catchup with alot of feature lost from a CRT. People only can care about numbers soo much before losing interest entirely "oh bigger number its better but i cant tell 4k onward it all looks the same washed out but detailed" We are already seeing it slightly with smart TVs it has to do something innovative or be different like transparent displays otherwise customers dont care and enthuists already see past the marketing BS with colour and response being the factors that matter which we lead back to CRTs still reigning supreme in that category. While I love the video overall, I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed at a couple things in the PC segment. One, you could've used a VGA cable (perhaps HDMI/DVI to RGB/VGA adapter which are readily available on amazon/ebay) to remove the stutter in the signal which might've fixed a lot of the problems you saw with games like Wizorb. Two, NO CAVE STORY?! There's a *plethora* of PC games that are styled in the vein of classic console titles, and I'm a bit disappointed that the PC segment took something of a back-seat in this episode. I could make a whole list of just what I know of in my library of Steam/GOG games, but there's many sources for you to pull from that natively will fullscreen at 480p. KZbin videos, Wikipedia articles, listicles, etc. Then again, maybe the GBS wouldn't be ideal for that kind of scenario, instead making the Framemeister a more viable solution to those cases. Maybe this could have a follow-up feature covering PC games that work well on a PVM? I swear, it could have its own hour (or more) long video with how many great Indie games are available in these styles of games. Not even just 2D games, but many PS1-style games as well! I recommend checking out the games included in the Haunted PS1 Demo Discs (a compilation of demos for games made from various Indies in the PS1 3D style), as well as many classic style FPS games like DUSK, Amid Evil, Heavy Bullets, Project Warlock, Ion Maiden... Another sub-set of games I could make a laundry list of. Rambling aside, I still love the show, and I did overall really love this video! It's great seeing how well many of these retro-inspired games translated to a PVM, as well as how many flopped that *should* have worked! As usual, I'm looking forward to the next video! 😁

Thanks for sharing this downscale adventure, great quality as always in your show! Somehow it’s just cool to downscale these newer games and to see those scanlines pop-up. It would have been interesting if back in the day a developper had decided to make a 240p Xbox 360 game. GPU wise it would be comparable to running 1440p on Series X. Why don't you try downscaling to 480i ? It should preserve more detail while still working on a 15khz tv.

I love everything about this video. Seeing all these modern games in downscaled CRT glory was something to behold. However I must admit that given your obvious love for the CRT I am kind of surprised you haven't tracked down a late model HD CRT for more modern game play. Something like a Sony KV-30HS420 for instance. It has a big tube, is 16:9 widescreen, has HDMI input, can display up to 1080i, the works. If you really want CRT look and quality with modern games something like this might be right up your alley.

[Try4ce] I used to have an HD CRT (a 36 inch 4:3 Sony version), but it was just too dangerously heavy to move or do anything with. Eventually I got rid of it so I could have room to do things with proper 15kHz CRTs. There definitely are perks to playing 480i or 480p games on an HD CRT, but even my first fixed-pixel 720p LCD TV from 2010 could show more detail in PS3 games than my HD CRT. I feel it's a technology that neither has the full benefits of analog or digital, and has a very narrow set of consoles that really shine on it. Just my opinion, though. I may have just resented the space it took up more than anything. :)
@dr.rotwang
@dr.rotwang 3 жыл бұрын
@@mylifeingaming Yes they do have a somewhat narrow range of consoles that can truly take advantage of them, but those that can look amazing. Where they really shine is when you track down one of the 16:9 models and can run stuff like OG Xbox games in widescreen. Now I can certainly understand the space and weight concerns. No arguments there that is for sure. I've got a couple of beast CRTs that top out over 200lbs myself. I get a new hernia every time I dust in the game room. XD

Great vid again, guys. Thanks. I have a theory about the small sync glitches in downscaling mode. Maybe it's because the vertical refresh rate from the GBS-C is set too close to what the consoles are outputting. ie. it might be expecting the source to be say 59.94Hz, but the consoles are outputting at exactly 60Hz. So the two frame rates are very close to eachother, but still asyncronous, so it's spending a bit too long swapping the framebuffers when the incoming and outgoing frame rates "line up". Like at 10:13, where the input to that scaler is async to the output. Try changing the output refresh rate on the GBS-C to something else, like even 50 Hz (if your BVM accepts 50 Hz, probably?) Just a thought, as it would be quick to test. ;)

I'd love for a comparison of true crt vs the best crt shaders in something like Retroarch. I feel the hardware purists instantly dismiss crt shaders (PVMs are expensive so they have a bias) but I've had amazing results that more than nullify my cravings to buy a real crt. I'm talking just image quality and authenticity, not input delay.

13:43 Speaking as a fella who plays widescreen gaming in 4:3, your "dark mirror" attitude is *FAAAARRRR* better than those who stretch 4:3 to widescreen. Sometimes those 4:3 games even support 16:9 and they *STILL* stretch it. Pure evil.

[Try4ce] Honestly I think it makes even more sense than Coury gave it credit for. When you think about all the Sega Genesis games that have skinny artwork when viewed in 4:3 on a CRT, seeing HD games slightly skinny on a CRT seems weirdly normal. Think about how the flowers in Sonic are oval. In Sonic Mania, they're honestly not looking that different from Genesis proportions here...

So you guys know that most of these games are also on PC? In which case you could install CRT Emudriver and force the correct output resolution AND refresh rate. And you can build a perfectly capable PC for these 2D games for about the price of GBS control, and definitely cheaper than the other options. Like I've played Blazing Chrome, Cyber Shadow, Oniken, Odallus, Sonic Mania, all with perfect 1:1 pixel scaling on my CRT. And no scaling lag to boot And on PVM's without a 16:9 mode, you can tweak the underscan mode's geometry in the service menu, and make it a 16:9 mode. Which will then allow you to play all these games in the correct aspect ratio, and still have all 240 lines

@lulkLogan 3 жыл бұрын
@sonikchilidog sometimes you have to figure out the resolution yourself if it's not on Pcgamingwiki. Easy enough to do by running on a 1x window, screenshot the window, paste that in something like MS Paint and check the properties for the size. If the window has a border, you do need to subtract that from the count. Since CRT's are 240p, any game that is 240 lines or lower in vetical resolution will work

Hey, I know you focused this episode on the GBS-C, but over on PC you can try running games with ReShade hooked on. It doesn't work for every game, only those that run in DX9/10/11, OpenGL or Vulkan *and* that don't already have a hook plugged in (like the Steam Overlay does), but if you can get it installed you've got access to a whole slew of shaders, in particular are various scanline/CRT shaders and the VirtualResolution shader. I've dabbled with directly halving my 1080p res with it before and even if it's not perfect, it's fun to play with. You guys could totally do a video detailing the intricacies of ReShade and how it can be used to really polish up a lot of games, especially earlier 3D titles. I've even used it on Daikatana myself.
