Great vid mate. I reckon the more wind the better, particularly a southerly, don't know why (in Port Stephens NSW). Also, I gave up on the FG as it was too hard to be consistent with across all line classes. I now (for the last couple of years anyway) use a modified Slim Beauty.

Enjoyed very much yr tutorial on Whiting fishing with poppers etc, me and a mate got a feed of Whiting couple days ago off a sandbar at Harrington with live nippers that we pumped in the Town 20 mins before, talk about idyllic times. I reckon you can’t go past live bait, with small little size 4 bait holder hooks and light line, I run a leader of 4 lb. There’s some flats that run for Kms locally that I want to get on in early morn wading with poppers. Gonna use the knowledge I learnt from yr tutorial. Maybe give one of the Daiwa Slippery Dogs a go, how do you rate them?
@mylurebox Жыл бұрын
Beautiful stuff mate. Yep the live baits on light gear are hard to beat for sure. The topwater lures can be a lot of fun and different kinda challenge to get the visual bite going. ;)

Try the surgeons knot to join light braid to fluorocarbon leader. It is easier and much quicker to tie than the FG. Recently I got my lure snagged and the uni knot (tied directly to a small lure 😮clip) broke before the surgeons knot. Very confident with this knot.

Hi John. Great video thank you. I have recently noticed I have a lot more success catching them on windy days in really shallow water. Have you notices have you had similar results?
@nathanyoung97033 жыл бұрын
Mate I use a surgeon's knot, It ties easy enough and runs through the guides with no issues. More importantly, when your knee deep in water it's no problem getting it sorted 9lb mission complete to 4lb fc rock fluro leader casts really well and is strong. Try chucking a bassday backfire, they cast a mile and catch the big ones
@dintism4 жыл бұрын
Hey John, i notice whiting tend to drop fairly often with the sugarpen, noticed it in your video too. I find drastically increases your hookup rate if you use a little assist hook instead of the treble that comes standard on the sugar pen.

Perhaps its the rainless Summer but I have not seen a legal sized whiting for months. If you want to fish in a lot of sun, come to Burrum Heads. We've missed the rain so far. Unfortunately there hasn't been much of a crabbing or prawn season due to the dry either.

It’s such a bugger. I’ve had a much slower season pertly because of it too. Though just today... flooding rain like backyards are fully under.

Leader knot I use is one I found called a kaneit knot. Just like a double uni only a double wrap around leader and and maybe 10 wraps around braid. Quick to tie and has done the job when landing gts to 65cms on the flats using 3kg main line.

John Thanks again for the video. Regarding an easy knot, if you search KZbin using "easy braid to mono knot" there is a video about a minute and a half by a gentleman with a German accent - I have used this knot for a couple of years without any failures - you can tie it with your eyes closed. It must have some limitations or everyone would be using it!Regards Stirling M

Anne Healy I used to use it, did some test, it only goes to around 60-70% of the line strength. Now I use the FG which is I believe 100% but never done any test with the FG

Light gear, 10lb and under, I use a "Nail Knot" !!! Got a small Nail Knot tool !!! Super strong, and really thin !!
@steiny33534 жыл бұрын
Michael Shaw I just googled your "Nail Knot tool" and found it very interesting. Looking at it, it's basically making a uni knot. I've got a partially disabled left hand (car accident) and I more often than not have a hard time doing my preferred double uni knot when tying braid to leader. (not in a Fly fishing scenario), but with a bit of imagination, this tool could be used to give the same outcome.....or am I wrong? ie. do the mainline braid tie first, then spin the tool around and do the leader tie next, then snug them up. boy ! that would make life a lot easier for me if it's doable. I've never even heard of a nail knot, pardon my ignorance.

@@peteh7966 I have just ordered one mate. It will be handy to have in the tackle box, even if I don't use it much. How would they be for heavier lines ? If you gave it a few more wraps, wouldn't it have a similar effect to a FG knot ?
@peteh79664 жыл бұрын
@@steiny3353 Yeah, it looks similar, I just like using the tool as it keeps everything together which is handy when tying it in windy conditions.Not sure about heavier lines, the heaviest braid I'm using is 8lb and the leader at the absolute most would be 15lb, so works fine for me.

Thanks a lot mate. I’m using GoPro 7s in a 2.7K flat protune setting and then some basic colour grading in FCPX. My mic is a Rode Video Mic straight from the camera. All in the one unit. It’s great in the wind too but sometimes the camera doesn’t pick it up or crackles etc. overall I’m really happy with it all.

I'm completely land based and it looks like all the flats worth fishing on google maps can only be accessed by some sort of watercraft :( and everywhere I've tried on the Gold Coast has been a bust. Any tips on what to look out for?

I like the spots that are covered only with an in-running tide. So they’re bare exposed at the bottom of the tide. The. More open areas with wind affected areas tend to go well too

Can be your reel, I've noticed diawas on the cheaper end get wayyyy more wind knots than my shimanos, to the point I've given all 4 budget diawas I've had away. Make sure you are trimming tags on leader knots very closely as they can get caught on guides for half a second and it causes the braid behind it to loop up. Maybe trying running all your line out and winding it back on under good tension as it may have a lot of twist in it, can do this by throwing off a jetty etc and let the tide take a float away from you and wind it back on
