I honestly was so against dipping pens after drawing an ugly Inuyasha in 10th grade and it kept exploding everywhere. Watching you use them for your manga has been so inspiring and I tried dipping pens again after 10 years and I FREAKING LOVE THEM! I’m not that great yet, I don’t have a flawless technique down and I still scratch the paper sometimes. I’m also not the absolute best at cleaning them correctly which I’m sure is disappointing to Mama Mushroom🙈 But the inks are so black and it’s so much more freeing than than holding a micron so I can finish large pictures WAY quicker. But you already know that. Thank you for inspiring me to pick up this feared medium and to tackle that learning curve. Love you! ❤️

Ahh I remember loving using a dip pen in high school the art teacher even let me keep one of the old ones! It's not in pristine condition but it works okay. I actually didn't know until recently I could actually remove the nib, it was actually kind of hard to get out because this is was one used by high school students so it was stuck in there pretty good. It fits the nibs from the quill my brother got me! I also got a learning calligraphy set from the resale shop super cheap that had a handle and more nibs! I did try them out before but I was getting frustrated because it seemed no matter what paper I tried them out on the ink bled and spiderwebbed out like crazy! I don't know if it was the ink or the paper but a few of the papers are bristol board simliar (I thought ) to what we used in my art class when we used it. I was moreso disappointed with the ink that came with the quill because it's obviously marketed to be able to write letters with but yet on most stationary I tried the bleed was so bad it was useless! Even the india ink I have left over from my college art course had this problem. I really want to try again using them for inking my larger works because I have noticed how fineliners have a tendency to get lighter once you erase your pencil strokes.

I started using ink and quill pens about five years ago an oh my, i love it! And i'm glad that i started this early (i was eleven when i bought my first quill pen), so i have mor time to learn and master in this technique.

What I did with my G pen to make it fit was put a very small layer of tape on the very bottom. It fits pretty nicely now. Far as I know hasn’t affected the pen negatively either. Just make sure it’s not too wide or anything

Yes. Just look into a higher flexibility nib so that it can spread more but most nibs have some pressure variation.

I'm just about to start with using dip pens and with your tips It'll be less of "oh no what have I done... it doesn't work, I hate ink..." 🙂😃😅 One more question I have, do you just regulary use copics when you lined yout art with ink? I always thought it wouldn't Work that well, 'cause the ink is sitting on top of the paper and no matter how long you tried to let it dry it would smear. 🤔 Mama believes in me, so I will be an ink pro someday!!! 💪😤🤩

Aaaaw I'm so happy I was able to help you in any way!😊💕 And to answer your question, you could experiment with alcohol based and India ink (dipping pens) but you'll have to keep in mind that something like Copics requires a lot of rubbing against the inked lines while applying color. You'll really need to make sure your India ink lines are completely dry AND cured before coloring. You'd need it to dry overnight and experiment on scrap paper to see if it works well for you. India ink is waterproof when dry, but I'm not 100% how it stands up to alcohol based inks 😅

Has these in my arsenal for a while now. I’m not too flash with them and unfortunately I can’t use them with copics given that the ink smears with the ethyl alcohol. I’m also not too fond of the scratchy maru nib. I’ve grown used to the G nib given its flexibility. 👌 However, using them with water based mediums has proven to be fine and painting with ink / diluting it is safe and creates some interesting effects. Generally for me the rule is: Sakura microns / Tombow brush pens with copic Dip pens with water based media and inks Either for pencil. My art is weird. I sometimes don’t even ink and and just go straight to colouring with lineless with copic and pencil 😂 I know this video is older now but I still like seeing your art on here. It’s very reminiscent of retro shojo styles and the detail is astounding. I just want to ask. What do you use for your manga pages? Is it deleter manga paper or something else? Also what size do you use for published works? Sending warm regards from Australia :)

How long does the ink in the bottle last until you need to buy another one?

How long the ink lasts depends on how often you use it ♡ Just like paint or a marker, you use them a lot they run out faster, you know? But I can complete an entire volume of my published series (250 pages) with 1/2 to a whole jar ♡ +Jovana Bastebriga

Ooo i love dip pens but one thing i noticed with the speedball ink is that it is only waterproof if it dries for like a day... when it dries for like a hour its only water resistant..*sigh* i wish my past self would have known that, the amount of watercolour disasters i could have avoided lol

Yeah, after an hour of drying, the ink is indeed dry and you can work on top of it (like adding screen tone or some paint), HOWEVER if you're going to reintroduce a lot of liquid to your paper (such as watercolor) you'll need the ink to dry AND cure,which means leave it alone over night at least XD +nox hedge
