How to RESET the SERVICE Light on a BMW 3 Series E90, E91, E92, E93

Hi, this video shows you how to reset the Service Indicator on a BMW 3 series when you do your own servicing. It also shows you what the different symbols mean and how to check the service information on your car. The car used in the video is a 2013 BMW 318i E93 (coupe). This process will be the same on the E90 (saloon), E91(estate) and E93 (convertible). Other BMWs might also follow a similar process.

This was a huge help. The dealer did the "vehicle check" and did not reset the meter. This worked perfect and saved me a trip 15 miles away. One difference: I had to start my car in order to get the same menus you had. I have a 2011 E90 and when I went through your steps, the menus never came up. After I started the car, everything worked perfect. Thanks!

I have a 2012 328i (N52 engine). The local BMW dealer wanted around $800 for Spark Plugs, Microfilter (air cabin) and brake flush. I replaced the Spark plugs and filter myself for under $100 and then had a local Goodyear shop flush the brakes, all for less than $225. Reset the Service and brake fluid light. Took less than 5 minutes and worked perfectly. Dan from Kansas City

Just replaced the rear brake sensor on my E91 here in the UK, and needed to reset the service lights. Superb explanation, and has done the job. Result, and thank you!

I couldn't get my brake sensors to stay put, they kept falling out no matter what I did so I just cut the wires and soldered them together and reset the brake warning. now I can never get a code ever again because the circuit is normally closed and now I don't need the sensors. I think it's pretty obvious when your brakes are worn out. the sensor is useless.

I've taken my car to the dealership 3 times for parts replacement & service since my service light came on last year, yet for some reason they didn't reset the service light. Finally got tired of seeing it & was trying to see if there was a way I could just reset it myself rather than make an appt at the dealership just to have them do what they forgot to do. I took it to the dealer and they ran diagnostics and said the oil sensor electronic module is returning error code. Estimated $675 USD I requested them to reset for now via their tool and paid them for other repairs ( valve gasket and oil filter gasket) only. They waived the diagnostic fee $175 One year ago the same thing happened and the dealer said one ignition coil failed and i just replaced one coil and put new plugs since it was due anyway In summary the issue can be anything so think before you spend and ask dealer or mechanic for reset and give it time before u spend money. Hope this helpd guys

Didn't work on mine. 2010 M3-spec wagon. If I pushed the starter button with no foot on the brake it just came up with an exclamation mark. Not the one in the triangle. If I have the engine running I and hold the odo reset I get the exclamation mark in the triangle but nothing else.

Thank you just had my local mechanic tell me I would have to go to the BMW dealership because they could not reset the service indicator for having replaced my micro filter aka cabin filter. They kept saying it was catalytic and never said catalytic converter. Again confusing because I was like what does the cabin filter have to do with catalytic.... . Either way it was one of those you are a woman probably don’t know much about cars situation. So I got home found this video less than 10 mins later was done thank you.

Hi Vince I have a 2005 BMW 320i E90, I had the oil and filter changed last week as well as the air filter and brake pads also rear brake pad wear sensor. I have the amber engine management light showing and the car had a fault code of 2B63 camshaft sensor, exhaust.....I have since changed the camshaft sensor and the light did go off and came back on after a few seconds, could you advise me as to what the problem could be or is it possible that the light will go off itself after the car has covered some miles? My 2008 335XI Chimes a few times every time I start it. Is there away to turn those chimes off. I don't mind a chime if there's an alert, but would rather it not chime if nothing is wrong. Thanks.....Nice video also.

Brilliant video, thank you. Just back from dealer oil service with service light still on, refused to reset it fully as i didn't get brake fluid done too. If they told me beforehand i would have got fluids done but i do very little miles and didn't think it needed it. Tyre shine on brakes and tyres which nearly caused me to have an accident at the first roundabout leaving the dealer and noticed slight damage to my door after getting home. After complaining they said they'll reset for no charge. They charge for this simple thing????

I have the X5 E70. I am guessing this method will also work?! Mine is currently flashing “vehicle check” but all the components (brake fluid, oil, front brake pads, rear brakes pads) are all showing “OK”. Does this mean that I don’t need to bring in my vehicle for any component change? Therefore resetting the “vehicle check” is valid to do now? Be great to get some insight.

I'm in the US, have a 2008 650, I had to push the start button twice or none of this worked. Also don't have the switch on the stalk, or the little clock animation during reset. I just used the trip button for everything. Thanks for the video would have been clueless how to do this.
