Hi, in this video I attempt to repair a Dymo 1000 Plus Electronic Label Maker purchased faulty from eBay. The display has failed, let's see if it is fixable.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

I've only watched until 22:00, but before I see how it turns out... I just want to say I admire you :) I would never have tried poking around at those contacts with any hope of actually achieving something, and I'm sure most people watching this would say the same. But you carefully poke away on the off chance it'll make it work in the end. And that's why I keep coming back to these videos! It's inspiring to watch someone who just does, before googling other's opinions on whether it's feasible or not! Edit 10 minutes later: Holy cow! Hahaha, that's brilliant mate, nice work!

Thank's for the video. It got me started fixing my Dyno Rhino 1000 with a bad display. I did not pull the cable off. I was able to fix mine by heating the ribbon cable connection briefly with a heat gun and then rubbing over the traces with a round smooth piece of plastic while it was hot.

Great job getting it almost displaying properly =D That type of connection can be re-heated with a soldering iron carefully. It will often fix it - but you have to provide enough heat (and not too much for too long). You can litterally slowily drag the iron across from one side to the other. That same technique I've used on Gameboys and other LCD screens using the same hot bar process. They use a hot bar to join them to the PCB. The glue weakens over time. You were lucky to be able to recover it after peeling it off like that.
@Mymatevince

Thanks Chris, I will try the iron next time. I thought it was conductive paint originally like the E.T book so I was worried about using the iron in case it melted the plastic :-)

I used to repair Dymo label printers about 10 years ago but they were the thermal label printers. The screen in that printer is similar to the ones that are used in the Siemens Optipoint series of business phones. Although on the optipoint phones the cable looped back onto a PCB attached to the rear of the LCD. They always developed that same fault. However since it was a business environment the whole screen had to replaced.

@kyrengorkian
@kyrengorkian 4 жыл бұрын
The anisotropic conductive film (also known as a zebra strip) between the display and the PCB has failed due to age. Replacement or repair can be a home fix if you have the correct tool. It is a silicone-faced T-bar shaped metal tool which mounts in a soldering iron. Heat and pressure from the tool is required to attach the strip to the PCB and LCD screen. Banggood used to sell a digital display FM radio kit complete with the T-bar tool and a supply of zebra strips.
@Alteracious

You can also get anisotropic or Z-Tape from 3M that you can use to replace the adhesive and get it to work.

Nice fix great feeling fixing these the later models are easier to fix though. My later ones have graphics and save create and print alot quicker. But i will say ribbons are still far to expensive. Ive also got a white heatshrink sleeve printer cartridges are stupidly expensive. Anyway nice repair as usual great video. 😉

Hi Vince, when dealing with glue residue and IPA isn't an option, a rubber eraser would be able to clean it well. Just gently rub it at a single direction to avoid ripping the pad.

If you search for "ACF" (Anisotropic conductive film) you can find out how the flat flex cable was originally bonded. This stuff is also available as a paste. If you had a very expensive item that failed a new cable plus the adhesive can be used to re-make it as new but fiddly (heat + pressure) and not worth the cost and aggro for cheaper items.

That conductive adhesive does this over time; especially if the device has been stored somewhere hot. The original Nintendo Game Boy as well as the Nintendo Virtual Boy are notorious for this. I've removed the vertical lines on Game Boy systems many times by putting a layer of Kapton tape over the ribbon, then going over it with the tip of my soldering iron to carefully heat up the glue, which fixes it.

Hi Vince! I replaced the led strips of my LG LED tv a few days ago. So, first of all, thanks for the inspiration. I was scared of doing it but your videos inspired me to go for it. To clean the remains of the glue I've first tried IPA and didn't really work. I've then used lighter fluid and was much easier and completely removed all traces of the glue (got the tip from a few of Toy Polloi's repair videos, he even used it to remove old tape from cardboard boxes). I'm wondering if this will be a good solution to expose the tracks on the cable you worked on here.

Is possible you stick it down on captive tape the whole lot use acetone to dissolve the other coating plastic glue whatever it is on a Q-Tip leaving the traces behind on the captive tape use some solder paste and heat it up with a gun use plenty of of rosin, would of thought would do the trick!! captive tape won't melt but the other barrier on the original would melt so that's why dissolve it and leaving the foil traces stuck to the captive tape. Probably best to coat the outer surface first with acetone and get the coating off before putting the captive tape on and reverse and do the other side
