Mysore Palace, also known as Amba Vilas Palace, is India's Largest Palace located in Mysore, Karnataka. It used to be the residence of the Wadiyar family.
The first palace was built in the 14th century, which was burnt to ashes during a wedding in 1896. The present palace was constructed between 1897 and 1912.
The architecture of the palace is Indo-Saracenic, with a mix of Hindu, Rajput, Mughal and Gothic styles. It is a three-storey structure with marble domes, and consists of a five-storey tower.
The palace has three entrances, the front gate or the eastern gate is opened only during the Dussehra festival and for VIPs.
One of the major attractions of Mysore Palace is its Kalyan Mantapa. It is a huge octagonal structure with a multi-coloured Belgian glass roof. There are motifs of peacock on the roof of the palace. This place was used for royal weddings and special occasions.
The Public Durbar Hall is a beautifully decorated room for the royal guests and courtiers. It was used for public announcements and hearings. The Public Durbar Hall of Mysore Palace is supported by beautifully designed green and golden pillars. The Maharaja used to sit at the centre of the hall so that his subjects could see him clearly.
Next is the Private Durbar Hall also known as Amba Vilas Palace. It is in this hall that the king used to meet his council of ministers and hold meetings with important persons.
There are 12 temples in the entire complex. The most important of these temples is the Lakshmiraman Swamy Temple.
The best time to visit Mysore Palace is duringDussehra when the entire palace is beautifully decorated and illuminated with golden lights.
