Myst III: Exile - 3D Coaster Ride

Myst III: Exile is a first person adventure game released on May 7, 2001. It was developed by Presto Studios and published by Ubisoft. The game was the third title in the Myst series.

One of the greatest moments in my gaming career. Yea I had a suspicion something interesting was coming once I complete the puzzles and tasks. But I wasn't really expecting to ride along. Spent many hours on those tracks fixing and connecting them. Watching balls crash as I tried to sync it all up. Ooh what a reward! Visuals and sound just spot on. Why I love games. Moments like this.

This was pretty intense the first playthrough, considering you just spent the entire level watching those glass balls explode in each puzzle.

Best part of the game! I still remember hitting that button and then when I saw it move me up into the ball I thought "oh my god no way, I'm going to ride in this thing? SWEET!"

Brilliant puzzle where the puzzle IS the level design. Multiple parts of the level becoming one giant ride that you must take to solve it at the end. Truly brilliant!

@TRYER25 Hello, I animated and lighted this at Presto Studios. It was a complete cheat to get it to feel like a roller coaster. There's no way the ball would maintain speed. It was a fun challenge to make it feel like the it was rolling because of gravity.. Chris

I don't know; it could have. The down parts certainly equal if not outnumber the up parts. Plus, you do start out at right around 100 feet up so I could see this working, sort of.

man... this was my favourite age in any myst game just because it was so organized and logical and such a cool concept, but I still think Riven was the best overall game of all 5.

At the start of this sequence it took me a half a minute before I had the epiphany (if you could call it that for a CD-ROM game) that I would be riding on all the seemingly unconnected structures through the three puzzle areas of this level. One of the most amazing experiences from a game I have ever had. To be really obscure, it was a similar experience to what happened while reading Neal Stephenson's book Anathem, about 3/4 of the way through when a character reveals a major plot point.

It's interesting how the properties of water have changed so much throughout different Ages, from being anthropomorphic in Serenia to thermophobic in Riven to indestructible in Narayan to spontaneous in Amateria.

@NoSoup4you From what I remember, Atrus built those Ages as training tools for Sirrus and Achenar. Saavedro changed the access codes as a way to punish Atrus.

You are correct, but by "access codes" he meant that he had broken the most obvious solution to most of the puzzles, for example, a jammed piece in a control panel, several broken counterweight pieces, stuff like that. Also I think he was only planning on delaying him even though it was enjoyable for him, in the end he planned to make him fix his world or kill him.

Yeah very true. Edanna (the plant one) was probably the middle for me, the end was a lot of going back and forth between plants. Still, the puzzles in Exile have NOTHING on the ones in Riven and Revelation

It depends, they ALL have different types of puzzles, for me, Amateria was the easiest of the base three, and Voltaic was the middle, and whatever the plant world one was was the hardest. For me, depends on what you are best at in puzzle solving.

Impressive cutscene and the puzzles in this age were pretty clever. But why the hell would any society build the marble puzzles in the first place? There's no reason for a lot of the things in Myst III to exist, like there were in the previous two games.
