The markings carved into the rocky outcrop, known as Carn Enoch, are completely different to other examples of Rock Art found locally. One theory suggests they are a form of Ogham writing, another that they were formed by the act of sharpening stone axes... or perhaps marking the position of the tides throughout the month? Let us know in the comments what you think about these carvings!
With Welsh winter weather settling in, the slightest promise of clear evening skies has us racing for the hills… Humans have occupied these hills for thousands of years, leaving behind cairns, standing stones, cromlech, hut circles and evidence of large prehistoric settlements.
We realized sunset was happening, so quickly headed up to Garn Fawr to get a better view. The bright side of the early darkness at this time of year, is beautiful sunsets by 4 o clock. And today the sun lit up the foggy valley, creating a sea of gold, … We stood In awe for some time, using the last of the light through a group of horses. :)

Used to take my children on these walks (especially Carningli) - they weren’t best pleased at the time - but now as young adults realise what an amazing place this area is.

I (jacky) was in love with Lord of the Rings as a kid (still a fan) and on an overcast days I liked to take a straight line route across the rockiest parts pretending it was Mordor... what am I on about, I still do this 😅

My view is that those marks have been tally marks, from what ever community had built their homes on and around Carn Enoch, to mark high and low tides. Newport beach is clearly visible below. If they were made by pilgrims then Garn Fawr would have been the more obvious choice being much larger, at the top of the hill and clearly visible as 'nipple' for miles around. Did you notice the large rock to rear of Carn Enoch with the diaganol crack in it? it is used for bouldering occasionally, but far more interesting is that there used to be coins in there, unreachable and rolled or 'shoved' towards the rear of the crack.

Thanks Cysgodycastell, interesting points 😊 We are still researching this site and surrounding pilgrimage routes so will look into that... We are also hoping for a follow up reply from a repectable name in rock art, his initial thoughts were a form of Ogham writing, but we'll put an update here when we have one 😀
