10. The Ulfberht Swords
Ulfberht swords were the weapon of choice of the Vikings, along with other tribes around northern Europe. They had a long, double edged blade, and a straight crossbar over the grip. There are only about 170 still known to exist today, each of which dates to between the 9th and 11th centuries! And the cool thing is they have the tell-tale inscription in the blade itself.
9. The Drepanosaurus
Whenever a new fossil is found, it gives further clues as to the evolution of animals, and of those that once roamed the earth. Every now and then, though, something is found that makes no sense at all in terms of scientific understanding, and requires a complete re-think of what is taken as fact. This is exactly what’s happening with a little known creature, the Drepanosaurus.
8. Rat Kings
The Rat Kings are a rare phenomena from the animal kingdom that is so bizarre, no-one is entirely sure how it happens. You may have seen one before, but if you haven’t- they really are something quite unusual. They have been a part of legend for centuries, and are formed when a number of rats become attached by the tail.
7. The Martian Meteorite
In 1984, a meteorite fell to earth, something that in itself is no unusual thing. But this one, known as ALH84001, was found to hold secrets that no-one has been able to explain. The 4.1 billion-year-old rock is thought to have originated on Mars, having been dislodged during a collision, and floated through space until it fell into earth’s atmosphere. Unlike other similar specimens, the surface of this rock had something very unusual- what appeared to be the signs of fossilised bacteria.
6. The Longyou Grottoes
The Longyou Grottoes are a series of underground structures near the village of Shiyan Beicun, in the Zhejiang province in China. They are thought to be at least 2000 years old, but scientists and researchers have no idea how they were built, what they were used for, or even who was responsible for them.
5. What was the first dinosaur?
Since we first realized that dinosaurs roamed the earth, palaeontologists have been trying to understand the full range of creatures that once lived, with particular interest revolving around which was the first dinosaur to ever live.
4. The Nampa Stone Doll
The Nampa figurine looks like any other that has been made by an ancient civilisation. The mystery surrounding this one, though, is how it came to be in the place where it was found. It was discovered in 1889 near the town of Nampa in Idaho. Workers were searching for water, and dug a well, which involved drilling a borehole to 295 feet.
3. The Piri Reis Map
Today we take maps for granted. Satellite technology combined with the work of cartographers over the years, plus Google of course, have created incredibly detailed depictions of our planet. All we have to do is use our smartphone! This wasn’t always the way, clearly, and maps from centuries ago were just kind of close approximations based on ship voyages.
2. The Voynich Manuscript
The 600 year old Voynich manuscript is often thought of as being the most mysterious book that has ever been written, and still, to this day, scientists aren’t able to explain what’s inside.
1. Dinosaur and Human Footprints
The final mystery is one which calls into question the idea that humans weren’t around at the time of the dinosaurs, because their footprints have been found side by side. The discovery was made in the Paluxy river, Texas, where hundreds of dinosaur footprints have been found. Their foot impressions were perfectly preserved by the river bed.
Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

A spicies not changing over a long time doesn't cast any doubt over evolution. If there a creature is well suited for an enviroment, and that enviroment doesn't change in a way significant for the creature there's no pressure for it to change either. take a look at sharks and crocodiles, through millions of years they've only had minimal changes

We don’t give ancient civilisations enough credit. They’ve discovered so much with so little and yet we a quick to write them of as “can’t be explained”, “must be a sign of extraterrestrials”, “a hoax”. Maybe one day people will look back on our time and write us off but yet this stuff is all concrete to us.

When people start discussing this, I always love to bring up Gobleke Tepe. In short, people in Turkey lived in the stone age around 10.000 years ago. They had no writing, no pottery, no domestic animals, no farms or anything. They all lived in nomadic tribes, gathering food from nature and hunting wild animals. Now, here's the fun fact. Gobleke Tepe is a stone monument with huge stone blocks that weight several tons each. They are carved precisely and placed perfectly in circles and on top of each other, and are covered in all sorts of images of people, animals and what not. The monument itself is impressive... but it's also around 12.000 years old. It's two thousand years older than the stone age. How is that even possible? Personally, I think the solution is fairly obvious. It's not possible that the people back then could have made it, and even we say they could, why on earth would they? It makes no sense. If you live in a small, nomadic tribe, barely able to survive by hunting and gathering food, you have no writing system to organize anything, no tools other than crude stone tools and so on, why go through all the trouble to make a huge monument like that? For religious purposes, like most people say? Hahahaha, no. My theory is that the people back then couldn't have made it... but it could have been made by people living *before* them. They knew a disaster was coming (great flood?), so they built the monument out of stone to make sure it would stand the test of time. It was their only way to preserve their knowledge to their decendants. They would have had the tools and means to build a monument like that, and writing down all they knew on paper, leather or something like that would be a waste. It would be destroyed soon anyway, even if simply by time. But carving it in stone would make it last forever.

@philsurtees
@philsurtees 5 жыл бұрын
+Arthur Mandisodza - What on earth are you talking about??? No one is claiming extraterrestrials or a hoax. Saying something can't be explained does NOT take credit from ancient civilisations. Quite the opposite in fact! We don't know exactly how the Ancient Egyptians build the Great Pyramid, but we know they did it. In other words it can't be explained. There is nothing wrong with the fact that we can't explain certain things and it does NOT imply any disrespect to the ancients.
@philsurtees
@philsurtees 5 жыл бұрын
+PikachuchuTrain - What YOU are talking about is off in La La Land. The Stone Age lasted for roughly 3 million years, so Gobleke Tepe was NOT built beforehand. Gobleke Tepe was built right near the END of the Stone Age. Of course it is possible for the people back then to have built it. What possible reason can there be for jumping to the wild conclusion that they didn't? There was NO great flood and there is ZERO evidence of an advanced civilisation living tens of thousands of years ago. Why is it that people like you think we have discovered fossils of animals dating back hundreds of millions of years, yet somehow an advanced civilisation left no trace of themselves? Oh ... sorry ... that's right ... according to you they did leave a trace of themselves - deliberately building massive stone monuments intended to hand down knowledge - but for some reason wiped out every other trace of themselves. Don't be ridiculous! Why on earth do you laugh at the suggestion of religion being the purpose? Clearly you have no understanding of ancient cultures. To the Ancient Egyptians - to use them as an example - religion and the afterlife was of the utmost importance to their culture. They believed - with all their hearts, because it was a long time before modern science - that the gods were in charge of the world. It was the Pharaoh's job to intercede with the gods to ensure good tidings for the people. When a Pharaoh died, the people didn't mourn, they rejoiced. Then the new Pharaoh immediately set about preparing for his own death and passage to the afterlife, where he would become a god, intercede on behalf of the people, and help to ensure their passage to the afterlife. Khufu was arguable the most powerful ruler in all of history. He was basically a god on earth. That is how he was able to get an enormous workforce to build one of the greatest monuments in history. People are mystified by the Great Pyramid because it just doesn't seem possible for ancient people to have built it with the resources they had, and people incorrectly believe the ridiculous assertion that we couldn't replicate them nowadays. Of course we could! We built the Large Hadron Collider - a building that is about a billion time more complex and precise than the Great Pyramid - and that is only one example of the amazing constructions that modern humans have built. If, for some reason, we decided to build a new Great Pyramid, and we had some driving force to do so - one that was as important to us as the Pharaoh's tomb was to the Ancient Egyptians - then we could build a bigger, more precise, better version of the Great Pyramid in much less time. It would be EASY for us if we were properly motivated. The point is that you are vastly underestimating the importance of the gods to these ancient people, and you are underestimating their intelligence. If you could go back in time and bring one of their babies forward to our time, it could go to school, and get a university degree, and potentially be just as much a part of our society as anyone else. So there is nothing mysterious about ancient people, who thought that these giant stone monuments were absolutely essential to their ongoing lives, being able to build the things they built.

In terms of the Voynich manuscript, they've now come to the conclusion and have been translating it from an old form and dialect of the Turkish language. It's taking them alot of time, but work on it is progressing rather quickly in comparison to previous years. If I remember correctly, I believe they started roughly a year and a half ago and it's a father/son team that was approached by one of the researchers on the primary team that has been given access to the book. The father wrote to the researcher to say that he would be able to translate the entire thing if he'd be able to look through it all and be given access rights. It'll be amazing if they ever get it finished :)

It was an astronomer who figured it out finally.

Honestly everyone completely disregarding the theory of evolution because of the finding of drepanosaurus has not the slightest idea of how evolution works at all, rather it is even more proof of evolution, because creatures evolve in a way best suited for the situation. So chameleons and drepanosaurus evolved in a similar way, because there was of living was extremely similar. A different example are ichtyosaurus and dolphins. Two completely different kinds of animals evolved in a similar way, because of a similar way of living and their environment.

connect clientele a theory that has a hell of a lot of evidence to back it up. If you knew anything about science you'd know that in order for something to even be considered a theory it must be repeatedly confirmed through both observation and experimentation. In science, theories are a bit of a misnomer because they aren't guesses, they are extremely reliable observations about the world. In short, if something is a theory, it is accurate or very close to accurate. We just don't know all the details yet.

The rat thing was explained when it was discovered. Sometimes rats get their tail knoted up. The "bundle" is an extreme example. They were probably fighting/mating.

Piri Reis map is not as mysterious as people claim, there is evidence of ancient Chinese maps and stories about seeing a possible land mass far to the south. Most think it meant Australia, except there is evidence they already knew about Australia are were talking about something else. Same with western European voyages to the new world shortly after Columbus. It is know that some vessels sailed to the tip of South America looking for treasure or other preciousness metals/stones in the new world. Those same voyages claim to have seen another land to the South of the farthest point of South America. But the ships never dared venture any further since it would have taken them too far from coast of South America. The Voynich Manuscript was solved, it a medical text from the middle ages on women health. The strange writing is a form of short hand used by students in central European middle age medical schools. This was discovered when a text known to be from students of this era was realized to look exactly like the Manuscript. When they compared it, they realized it was also from student. Though there is evidence that parts may have been copied from other students notes. Which is why its so confusing at times and took forever to put together. We have discovered large mammals that lived in the time of non-Avian dinosaurs, odds are their paws and our feet could have been similarly shaped. The prints don't show human toes or skin impressions, just the general shape. Since most likely they were the mammals that survived the asteroid and could be some of our ancient mammal ancestors.

I have one thing to say that conflicts with your statement, the tracks aren't mammalian, they were a mix of hoaxes, tricks of the light, and eroded ornithomimid trackways.

I think that's just gonna turn out to be nothing again, there have been similar news about it in the past and it's risen in popularity in the recent years, so it doesn't surprise me in the least that muslims are trying to make it their own, like so many other discoveries and inventions.

@JackSpeed 439 Batteries, astronomy, and even computers pre-date Islam existing by a good 1000+ years, in other parts of the world than the middle east. And Islam had plenty of bad times, it just didn't line up with a new wave of bad times in Christian countries at that time. The random timing of those events relative to each other, has nothing to do with how good either religion is.

I'm pretty sure that last photo "do you see a human foot here or not?" is the photo from a site where there were VERY CLEAR human footprints along with the dinosaur prints, but the human ones were defaced. This video only showed a pic from AFTER they were defaced. There ARE PICTURES of the prints beforehand and they are VERY obviously human. Sad that they used the post-vandalization pic rather than the really clear beautiful one.

I think you are confused. There are no fossil records that actually show human footprints next to dinosaurs. Here is a video explaining why you might think there are footprints. kzbin.info/www/bejne/foXLfIeOp66BfsU I doubt you'll believe it though because all scientists are out to prove their own agenda of evolution.
