It was intended to be a mashup of Chinese, Japanese, and Tibetan cultures, the creators of the map are indeed Chinese and Japanese and they wanted to just share their culture of the Far East. They know the differences between the three cultures and made a big point of pointing that out in the two villages (Xifang being based on Chinese, while Azuma being based on Japanese). Even your inventory at that you receive in the beginning reflects this with mooncakes on one side and sushi on the other.

They do show respect for each individual culture, with the Inventories for example: Mooncakes are a Chinese delicacy, and Onigiri (also called Rice Cakes) are a Japenese delicacy. Same with the cherries and the peaches - Sakura Trees, or Cherry Trees, are trees that Japan is symbolized with.

Actually (Heres some cultural history) the wolf's texture might be based about the spirit of Lingxuzi, a demon of Chinese legend, that in it's true form, transforms into a Gray Wolf. that might explain it's demonic appearance
