My dad was a 2nd shift train dispatcher for Southern Railroad. Mom said you have to be a strong woman to be able to hold down the fort and raise the kids because the railroad has to come first. We never did without and Dad took every hour that he wasn't sleeping or working to be involved with our sports and other activities. But pretty much, mom had to be the judge, jury, and disciplinarian. None of that: "Wait till your dad comes home."

Worked over 20 years for a class one railroad the job always cones first , no sick leave , work in all weather types, , 24/7 365 days a year. Working on call, pool turns , yard jobs, extra boards. I spent most of my career as a conductor flat switching and doing industry work, did a little bit of road work . Road work paid the best, home for ten hours rest and out on a train , sleeping in hotel and getting a train back home . Saw lot's of sunrises, moon rises, and worked all the holidays, all my birthdays, missed out on a lot but the money was good.

Think of a Railroad Man as someone who is gone a lot because they are traveling, sort of like airline pilots, truck drivers, and river barge men. It would be a life of loving a heartache.
