I knew a retired General Electric Electrical Engineer who had worked for NASA, and was contracted as a civilian engineer by the United States Navy to spend 6 months at a base in Greenland (most likely the same one in this documentary), and loved it. He said that it was very comfortable, and they even had their own bowling alley, etc. He said that the pay was extremely good too because Greenland was considered an "unpleasant" assignment. He said that he liked it much better than working for NASA in Florida. He said that Florida was "uptight and snobby"... His stay in Greenland was far more pleasant socially, and in every other way. Unfortunately, I can't ask him more about it. He passed away several years ago. He was a very nice gentleman, and a wonderful conversationalist. I miss talking to him.

In 1963 I had just completed training as a supply and parts specialist in the army corps of engineers in Washington DC. My Commander called me to his office and told me he had just received my orders for my first assignment. It was to a place called 20th century under the ice. However a week later my orders were changed. Instead I went to Fort Benning Georgia to train with the 11th air assault division. 18 months later I had completed training as a Paratrooper and Ranger. In 1965, I found myself in a place called Saigon South Vietnam. 14 months later I was in the 82nd Airborne division where I ended my Military life in the mid to late 60's. I was one of the lucky ones who came through it all with a wound to my right leg. And that was not very serious. I am an old man now 78 YRS old. With nothing but great memories. I pray for all those young men and women who were not as lucky as I was. May God bless and hold them close in heaven. Our freedom is and was very expensive in blood and young lives. Please don't forget about it when we elect our leaders. We must keep America safe and strong for them and our children. God bless you all.

This may not be the same base that I know of. I was active duty Marine . A radio intelligence specialist. I met several men who were stationed at Greenland. A radio signal is a beacon and reveals its' source. So people worked there for radio intelligence. But, its' main reason was to have ICBMs as close as possible to the USSR. It was considered an undesirable duty station.

Ever heard of the USA"s black budget projects? Look into "D.U.M.B.'s" Deep Underground Military Bases that are all over the US & Canada now too. They are ALL interlinked together, and a man named Phil Schneider, who helped build a couple in Nevada, tried to warn us about them, and why they were being made. Unfortunately, his attempts to warn us, caused him his life. He was found dead in his home, just weeks before telling his family, he believed his life was in grave danger. He was found "suicided" {strangulated, including a bullet to the back of the head} Military coroner listed his death as a suicide. YEAH RIGHT!! But seriously Tim, read up on him and those DUMB's and you'll find you've fallen into the preverbal rabbits hole once you do! But, as always, that's just my opinion! :)))

In 2016, a group of scientists evaluated the environmental impact and estimated that due to changing weather patterns over the next few decades, melt water could release the nuclear waste, 20,000 liters of chemical waste and 24 million liters of untreated sewage into the environment. However, so far neither US or Denmark has taken responsibility for the clean-up. (Wikipedia).

He tried twice to set up an appointment with me before he asked why the Air Force wouldn't want me. When I explained that I had a fake leg he seemed so let down when he asked if I had any friends who might want to join the Air Force. I actually had a chance to join my HS ROTC unit, we were an Air Force town and the Lt Base Commander of the Air Force base near by (Travis) was a family friend. He got an exception for me to join the ROTC but I stupidly turned it down. I found out later that friend had gotten my exception from General Charles A. Gabriel himself. No idea how he pulled it off, but I felt even worse when I found that out. Stupid kid.

Camp century was built as a secret military base but, promoted in this film as purely a research facility. It was originally conceived as a launch complex for nuclear missiles, but they were never deployed there for two reasons. , the Danish government who owns Greenland refused the US government to place them in their territory. And 2. The US government discovered, after they had built it, that it was not suitable for the deployment of nuclear missiles. Something that they should have checked before construction started. The base was built in 1959, and closed in 1967. The information regarding it's intended use was de classified in 1996. The nuclear reactor was removed shortly after its closure and all of the tunnels have collapsed. The base can no longer be reached. So, there is no mysterious underground secret military bunker on Greenland.

Hard to believe they were able to do this at that time or even today. Not sure how prone to it that location would be but wouldn't want to be there during an earthquake. What's with the red equipment with a yellow star on it?
@alanbrown3976 жыл бұрын
Camp Century was abandoned, but the glacier it's built on has moved and there's a very real risk that it will be exposed to the elements within 20-30 years. Interestingly, it's NOT the abandoned nuclear reactor that people are worried about, it's the chemical contaminants, including tons of Polycarbonated Biphenols used in the electrical and other systems.

Our military members are the best in the world. This was a wonderful documentary to view. So much sacrifice by our uniform personnel went into this camp construction project. Very impressive and eye opening to see. Under the harshest of working and living conditions the project was a complete success.

I have several colleagues who outsource themself to Greenland a couple of months a year. You earn a ton of money due to the harsh conditions. But not only is the weather conditions, and mother nature dangerouse, you will also be looked down upon from the local innuits. Many of the foreigner workers there have a bad name to them for destroying land and the local population. One of my friends told me an older lady spit him right in the face walking on the street. It was because she remember the time before they came. That was - I believe, in the early 90s -95 Much hasn't changed since then i heard. Its very isolated

I remember when my dad left Fort Eustis to go there in the early 1960's. Yes, I was an Army brat. The coldest place I've been to so far is Fort Drum, NY. My unit went there for winter training in 1980. The day we arrived it was -40°F. The day we left it was 40°F. Had guard duty one night and the temperature was -25°. I was the driver and posted guards every hour. Just glad it wasn't windy that night.

All those working on the reactor wore dose meters. If your meter reached a certain level you were given a different job. The crew handling the loading was housed seperate from the rest of us but we did talk to them and I remember no complaints.

I think if I remember correctly this base closed down shortly after being built because all the ice and snow around it was melting and moving the buildings around non stop,or that’s a different base. I know they did a few of these

Unfortunately our on-site portable reactors never worked out. Unlike the Navy’s reactors, they all leaked and made the sites, pipes, and other materials radioactive, Camp Century included. New designs in many small modular reactors are promising portable, self-contained nuclear reactors. But these early reactors contaminated sites and soldiers from Greenland to Antarctica.

It was built during the Cold War in 1959, not during WW2. We didn't have time during the war to build something like this (not to mention the technology). There were no nuclear reactors during WW2.
