I received a brand new fountain pen from China only last week. Very tactile. Still own 2 cassette decks and 2 Walkman type players. Something satisfying about using them. Particularly when you play a cassette on a truly hi fi system. Guys who have never heard this format before are amazed that old tech can sound so good.

G'day Tony, from Sydney Australia! Seeing Greencorp just jogged my memory, I have a VERY old can of "Record Clean Anti-static spray", and I knew I saw that name somewhere, sure enough, it was Made in Australia by Greencorp Magnetics.

Ah yes! Cassettes from my home country!! 🇦🇺It's good to see that Greencorp tapes are decent! There is a few more Aussie tapes (not Aussie made though) that I thought of, like Acme XHG that were sold in Woolworths back in the 90s and 00s, and of course Cannon Power! Nice seeing a new video Tony btw!
@TheKnobCalledTone. Жыл бұрын
Those Acme and Cannon Power tapes are barely Type 0, let alone Type 1. They were shit.
@finleypapworth9575 Жыл бұрын
@@TheKnobCalledTone. the cannon power ones are better than acme but I’ve had one good acme and two good cannon powers and I have a 3 head deck which made them sound very decent in my tests. I did have 3 acme tapes that did not sound good but it depended on if you got a good batch or not, I do agree that the quality control was crap with acme but the cannon power with Dolby B does sound musical
@finleypapworth9575 Жыл бұрын
@@TheKnobCalledTone. I don’t fully agree that all of them were shit… it might’ve been a few factors like storage and a bad batch but with a good batch they can sound good fully biased up on a 3 header
@finleypapworth9575 Жыл бұрын
@@TheKnobCalledTone. at least they weren’t as bad as the bloody awful Maxim and International tapes that people are selling for way too much! If I had to choose, I’d much rather hear a good recording on a good acme or cannon power than a Maxim or International tape!

Thanks for video Tony. I think you made a good point about the pitfalls of 3 head decks and the temptation to be overly critical when comparing the tape to the source. Assuming that we're primarily fans of music, what's most important is that the recording sounds good (enough) when we decide to sit down and listen again.
@CassetteComeback Жыл бұрын
That's it. I don't level what decks I record music cassettes on. When I play an old recording it either sounds good or it doesn't. If it sounds good, I'm happy with it.

Great you see a new video. I work in tech too, had a couple of Psions back in the day (and still use them on occasion), and still use pen and paper frequently. I'm fond of the tactile. And each of these has its own area where it can't be beaten by something more modern. I've even been making mix tapes lately, there's no other medium that can start where you left off with a press of a button.

I have used those Opus cassettes and they certainly didn't sound that good for me! Of course I was using a boombox which used a permanent magnet erase head! I was unfortunate to have such a device, it gave me much pleasure during my youth and I remember that I quickly learnt that if a tape was recorded on a hi-fi system, it sounded much better on my boombox compared to recording on the boombox itself.... So I carried a spare tape everywhere I went because you could never be sure where you might end up and what hi-fi equipment would be there. I have seen you test tapes that I have tried to use in the past which sounded like crap to me on the sub par equipment available to me back then and can't believe how good they sound on a much better machine! In fact, just about all cassettes you have tried sound great but for some reason I feel that a boombox really seperated the really good from the really bad... It's almost like the boombox had a preference for quality tape.... Not all boomboxes were terrible, I came across a 90's sharp which also had a CD player which someone threw out and I took it home and took it apart to get at it's circuits for spare parts, only to realise that this boombox didn't have a permanent magnet erase head... It actually used an AC biased erase head! I really wanted to put it back together to test it's performance but it was a bit too far gone.... I didn't expect to find this feature in a 90's boombox because they were already on their way out of fashion but it seems that sharp was still putting in a lot of effort... It's circuit boards were stuffed with melf type resistors! This is a high end component usually found in automotive equipment where reliability is paramount.... I'm now keeping an eye out for another one of these boomboxes because I'm really interested in knowing how good they were.... And on the topic of those DEX cassettes, I looked up blank cassette sales some time ago and came across DEX Audio and they had blank tapes for sale on their website, they are located here in Melbourne and might still be around... I wouldn't be surprised... I didn't purchase any of their cassettes, plain white tapes just don't do it for me.... A cassette is more than just what is recorded on it... That's why we are still here today talking about them....

Tony, I knew you could list out where that Alexett was made when I sent it to you :-) It's a Forward shell, just as all the other tapes in this video, except for the DEX which I don't know anything about. But the tape in the Alexett could be anything, they only bought C-zeroes from different sources and loaded them from pancakes. There are later Opus cassettes which are cheaper China/Hong Kong products that are neither Forward nor Greencorp. So I think Opus was not a Greencorp brand. It probaly belonged to that "Musicway Corp" which is listed on the back side, and for this series they happened to get the cassettes from Greencorp.
@CassetteComeback Жыл бұрын
Cheers. And thanks for the cassettes you sent, I wasn't sure where they came from otherwise I would have thanked you personally. I still have them and will get round to a video on them at some point.

I was thinking just how accurate tape coatings have to be to prevent drop-outs from occurring when the tape is moving at only 1 7/8 ips. I thought both of those tapes were pretty good but it's not the same as listening directly to the sound.

Nice one as usual Tony. I have a few Greencorp and Opus tapes in my collection. I didn't consider them high end at the time but i might go back a try some new recordings now that I have decent decks. Regarding Dex, they were a CD manufacturing plant in Melbourne and they also did mastering work. In 1993, my musical partner at the time and I released our first album on CD. Dex Audio did the CD manufacturing.

As always superb. I am totally of this era and have many tapes with recordings from radio. Rarely missed a tape session for Coldcut Solid Steel in the 90s however I clearly didn’t appreciate enough the technicalities and as such am revitalised . Thanks a mill. Plus was there a time when any old company would knock out freebie cassettes or try and grab a piece of the pie by sticking their name on (probably) the cheapest shite cassettes. I’m thinking of the MP3 player thing where you could buy a Lego one or a Tetleys tea piece of tut. Are there some gems out there, love to know if you can shed some light or even hopefully have some. Cheeers and thanks.

How do you know if someone is bootlegging or counterfeiting cassette tapes? I bought some cassette tapes on ebay and they are pretty rare. They have print on the cassette and labels and everything ;however, I am not sure if the seller is making more copys. He did post for sell another copy of one of the cassettes I purchased. I am not sure if it's another copy he had around or he made copy himself i.e. he bootlegged a casette. I am not sure if you can make a video on bootlegged cassettes. I know back in the day when I was a kid people in my neighborhood people would sell bootleg movies, cds and cassettes, so I know it's possible to bootleg or counterfeit cassettes.
