Why not swap intake/exhaust cam adjusters with drivers side and see if the issue moves to other “bank”? Then you would know it’s an adjuster issue.

I consulted good ol' ChatGPT with some info from your videos.... this is what it came up with: If your M156 engine only misfires at steady RPMs once it is warm, it does suggest a potential issue linked to oil viscosity, heat expansion, or temperature-dependent components. Here's what to consider: --- 1. Hydraulic Lifters and Valve Train Issues (Oil Viscosity) Lifter Collapse: On warm engines, thinner oil can cause worn hydraulic lifters to collapse, leading to improper valve operation (e.g., sticking or incomplete closure), which can cause misfires at steady RPMs. Valve Lash Adjusters: Similar to lifters, they may struggle to maintain proper clearances when the oil thins at operating temperature. Camshaft Adjusters (Timing): Heat can cause oil pressure-fed cam adjusters to malfunction, slightly throwing off timing at specific loads/RPMs. Next Steps: Inspect hydraulic lifters and lash adjusters for wear. Ensure the correct oil viscosity is being used (e.g., MB-approved 229.51 5W-40). Check camshaft adjuster solenoids for function and leaks. --- 2. Oil Leaks Into Combustion Chambers Valve Stem Seals: Worn seals may allow small amounts of oil to enter the combustion chambers when the engine is warm, leading to misfires at steady RPM. PCV System: Excessive oil vapor drawn into the intake can cause fouling at low RPMs. Next Steps: Inspect spark plugs for oil fouling. Test crankcase pressure to ensure PCV system is functioning properly. --- 3. Temperature-Dependent Sensor or Electronics Crankshaft/Camshaft Position Sensors: Heat can cause intermittent signal issues, leading to misfires under consistent RPMs. O2 Sensors: A failing oxygen sensor can send incorrect data when fully warmed, causing improper air/fuel mixture. MAF Sensor: Heat soak may affect MAF sensor performance. Next Steps: Check for stored or pending codes using a high-end scanner, even if the CEL isn’t on. Log live data to monitor sensor performance once the engine is warm (focus on MAF, O2, and timing-related sensors). --- 4. Engine Timing Timing Chain Wear/Slack: Excess slack in the timing chain can cause timing inconsistencies when oil thins. Cam Adjuster Solenoids: Solenoids might not hold position properly at operating temperature. Next Steps: Inspect the timing chain for stretch and tensioners for wear. Verify camshaft timing under steady RPM conditions with diagnostic tools. --- 5. Fuel System (Heat Soak) Injector Overheating: Heat soak can cause injectors to malfunction at low-load, low-RPM operation. Fuel Pressure Issues: As the engine warms, a failing fuel pump or regulator might struggle to maintain proper pressure. Next Steps: Perform a fuel pressure test, focusing on behavior once the engine is at operating temperature. Run an injector balance test to identify weak or sticking injectors. Hope this helps!

Chris, I really enjoy watching you thinking your way through problems. A “quick and dirty” way to check your theory on whether a drop in oil viscosity as the oil heats would be to change to a thicker viscosity to see if it impacts the problem at all. It’s not a permanent solution but it would give you another data point as you continue to troubleshoot.

We could start an entire response section on why Chris won't talk with Alex from LSC's. I firmly believe between the two these guys they can figure this out. There has got to be a reason that Chris has not already done this. I also suspect that Alex knows about this issue as I am sure he has been made aware either thru watching Chris' videos or someone telling him. Chris, I know you are reading this, break down and get Alex involved and yall could collab on this matter. A collab between the two of you would be video that would soar in views on both channels. Hey just FYI this week I helped someone diagnose a no start on a truck that only happened when it warmed up/heat soaked. Could only find the problem when we ohmed the harness while the issue was active- it was a broken wire that only presented itself when warm. Thought of you seeing as how your issue now has a temperature element as well.

Not that you want to put everything together again just for a quick test, but if you think it's truly oil pressure related with heat, you could run a heavier viscosity oil for a quick test maybe a 15w40 or 20w50 and see if it changes the test in anyway. Not something you want to do long term especially in your colder climate but wouldn't hurt anything for a quick replication of scenario That wear did look funky on the cam adjusters, so hopefully it is not an ME issue and I agree the issue presents itself in a way that doesn't necessarily make sense for an ME to be the culprit, but you never know until the issue is solved... I'm pulling for you big time, the intake manifold looks amazing and slowly but surely you will get there!

Maybe a higher viscosity motor oil will help. For example, the Jaguar manual recommends 10W-30 for their old XK engine but a Jag expert advises that a broken-in engine needs 20W-50. I switched to 20W-50 and it made a difference.

Also you don't feel the miss fire when it's cold because when it's cold it's in open loop with high rpms that mask the symptom. It's common on car with a miss if you give them just a little bit of throttle they "feel" better....I don't believe it's temperature related at all

Love this serie..... following!! I think you are correct. I think you are on the right track, the other day I had a Porsche 996 in the shop with a similar issue. The vvt system in that car (vario- cam) on bank 1 was stuck in the advanced position. The cam adjuster was bad and allowing oil pressure to activate the cam timing. So bank 1 was advanced 2 bank was correct.. It had a rough idle - it was counting miss fires but they were not real miss fires . It was not adjusting timing for the advanced camshaft position (because the computer did not expect an advanced cam) it had only felt like a miss fire . The PCM was not "smart enough" to know what was happening but it considered it a miss fire . Most cars count miss fires when the engine speed slows down because it's counting crank signal vs cam position signals. The PCM really doesn't know what's happening it just knows something is off so it counts a miss fire. Car had great power up top but no low end power . Anyways I think you have something similar, maybe oil by passing somewhere - oil pressure loss within the camshaft phasers or the housing . Those score marks are a good indicator..maybe it had a wear issue from being ran low on oil at 1 time or a dirty oil filter. many Audis will have oiling issues because of a poor/ cheap oil filter. There's relive valves in the oil filter housings . Anyways keep looking and something is bound to be off.

But is that wear normal or caused by something specific?

In some cars, if it's not up to operating temperature, the computer system might not fully check for all potential issues because many diagnostic checks rely on the engine operating within its normal temp range. So the issue may not appear until the car is warmed up, because the car is not checking for the specific thing that is causing the issue.

Hey Chris, long term watcher first time commenter from New Zealand here. First up, I love ya channel bro. You got great taste in cars and how to mod them to look mean as. And you're a funny guy, I cracked up at your reaction to the glove giving you the finger during the smoke test🤣. How/why your channel isn' t WAYY bigger I really don't know. You make killer content and still work full time, respect bro. I gotta agree with everyone else, you and and Alex from LSC would make a great colab. I've been watching his stuff for ages and he seems like a cool as dude too. You guys are quite different but your taste in cars is crazy similar. Cobra Mustangs, Ford Lightnings, M156 powered Mercs, 1000hp+ twin turbo LS's. Doesn't Alex have a spare M156 in pieces at Modern Masters or something for those parts you need? I feel ya pain chasing mystery issues, I'm chasing driveline issues in my HSV Clubsport. Anyway, keep up the great work bro, we'll all be watching and hoping you get it sorted.

Hows the valve lash adjustment? Just a thought after listening to your review of the issue. I wonder if those seal rings have worn to the point that the end gap is too larger and at temp, they are bypassing oil between chambers of the adjuster. That gouge might indicate the rings are rolling over and gouging the bore and are out of spec. Oil pressure would change the amount of pressure on those rings as well. Maybe a check of the end gap spec and/or replace those seal rings. Like I said, just a thought.

Im sure that other people have already said the same thing. Would you consider switching the cam adjusters with the ones from the other bank? It theory if it sets a misfire on the other cylinders, you would know for sure the issue is from those specific cam adjusters, if not you would at least know that it occurs on bank 1 only. Just a hunch. Love you content, keep up the good work!

You probably just need a proper tune or ecu reset with all the stuff you doing to the car also since it’s a misfire its probably getting low voltage to the plugs when you hit the gas at 1500rpm maybe something is pulling the power from it I’d start with removing a plug while the car is running and have someone rev it an see if the spark is even across all plugs when you rev at 1500 rpm do it one by one tho lol you may need a new wire harness probably got a short somewhere but also check your fuel injector it’s probably clogged up pushing little fuel out that can cause this problem try seafoam it works great for cleaning fuel system or even the valve cover seal may be broken there may be oil in your plugs that happen to me car stutter like crazy when I rev it

You should check for low compression you may have a leak in the cylinder from wear or the head has worn it self out and cause a small air gap I was doing more research and that’s most likely something you should check out if you haven’t done so already Im new to the channel and just giving ideas so correct me if I’m wrong or if you have done any of these I can look into more ways and I know these are come with bad head bolts but knowing this model comes with the updated head bolts that could be the cause as well you never know

I like where your head is at. These cam adjustors are a troublesome item to say the least. 63 Motorsports came in clutch when I got my 10' E63 AMG as this was the first thing I had to do on mine. I really hope this is the issue. We will all learn something regardless.

I mean, 😂 I loveeeee your commitment to this. I feel it’s driving me just as insane as it is you. Lol never owned or even ridden in a Benz so take my theory and anything I say w/ a grain of salt. You mentioned it happens primarily and promptly once the temperature changes. Not saying this could or would fix anything but have you tried a thicker oil? Idk, my thinking is if it’s happening when the oil thins what would happen if it had a thicker viscosity when it heats up? 😂 again, I have no idea what I’m talking about in the Benz world and this is just a theory and a very cheap theory to test. I’m here to see you fix those bro, love the content man.

I’ve see it before where the ECU was corrupted and would be causing a strange misfire issue. Not saying that’s what it is but possibly look into it. I had a corrupt ECU and would misfire on certain cylinders. Was chasing my tale till the ECU was replaced and fixed the issue. I have an M272 engine so not an AMG engine but similar issue.

Hello Chris, I watched a video about 2 years ago, Tasos was pressure testing those adjusters, I am pretty sure a huge leak would cause a misfire. He used a broken cam with a pressure intake nipple on one side and the other to the adjuster then dropped it in water to watch the bubbles. I think it was water of diesel I don't remember

I’m not familiar with Mercedes but I have worked on a bunch of different vvt systems. I have had some similar problems with a couple of them and they usually have a small screen type of pre filter, I have found chunks of sealant, gasket and other stuff that would slow the flow of oil to the cam gears and cause slow response codes or camshaft to crankshaft correlation codes. The tiny scratches on vvt gears could also explain the lack of oil flow to them. Don’t know if that will help but I will definitely be interested in seeing what you find out about whatever is causing this
